Working from Home – 5 Tips for Effectively Working from Home
Many people dream of working from home, so if you are one of these lucky people, there are some tough things that must be done in order to stay on track. When you are at home, there are so many distractions, that it would be easy to wander off to do a little laundry, pick up the living room, or take a little movie break. With nobody but yourself to be accountable to, it’s important to set a few rules for yourself. We’ll go over a few tips that will help you stay on track.
The first tip is to act like you are going into an office job. Find a space to use as your office when working at home. Shower, shave, and get dressed. Maybe you don’t have to wear a suit and tie, but put on some day clothes! Go into your work space, shut off any outside distractions, and keep your workspace neat.
The second thing you want to do is be diligent about your day. Start your day with a good breakfast. Shut off things that distract you, such as email and telephones. Make a to-do list and work through your priorities in the right order. Sometimes it will feel hard to stick to work when it’s a tough day, but you can do it.
The third tip is to keep the right work tools handy. When working from home, it is important to have an ergonomically correct office chair. Keep something nearby to take notes on, because you never know when a stroke of genius will hit. Keep water nearby for drinking so you stay hydrated.
The fourth tips for your home office productivity is to keep your schedule. Set up some start and end times, and give yourself breaks. Also, take a reasonable lunch break but come back when it’s time. Stop working when the time is done. You don’t want to be working night and day!
The final thing you need to do when working from home is to completely treat your work as business and not as a hobby. Keep track of all your numbers. Take tax deductions where they apply, keeping track of your income and expenses. Keep track of your time as well. When you work from home, following a few disciplines to keep yourself on track is important and sometimes very difficult when you are used to working in a corporate office. Following these five tips will help you to discover how you can work from home and have a very productive day every day.

In regards to your fourth tip, it is very easy to lose track and neglect to take breaks. I can’t stress enough how important breaks are when working from home. There are days when I’m working and I will get that “aha” moment. I’ll then get sucked in and be tempted to follow through with the idea. It then comes to a point to where my eyes begin to hurt from looking at the pc and the headaches start rolling in.
What I began to do was take my dogs for a walk. I kill two birds with one stone because they have to go out anyway, and the sunlight will sort of even things out for me. Also, the walking lets you stretch those much needed muscles and gets the blood flowing. One thing to keep in mind: regardless of how good that “aha” moment is, you do yourself more damage by not walking away for a break. It may seem like lost time but at least it clears the confusion.
Kevn, you couldn’t be more right. Sometimes you have an idea and you stay up until the wee hours because you just can’t pull yourself back from the screen. Breaks are so important. Consider them the rewards for the effort you have put into your business. It’s the journey, not the destination and you should never ever forget to appreciate the little things. Good luck!
