How often should you tweet for business in order to attract the most clicks, without diluting your twitter stream and ticking off your followers? It’s important to note that having a follower who has only a few hundred people that they follow, chances are if you tweet any kind of numbers daily, you’ll quickly take up their entire feed and might just get a message warning you that they are about to unfollow you, or even worse simply unfollow you without letting you know.

Now being someone with close to 40,000 tweets that are geared mostly towards SEO and Internet Marketing and the like I certainly know about tweeting quality tweets, and tweeting them often, but what about the timing of those tweets?

I’m sure you can see where this is heading, the Tweeter was me, and the follower was one of mine, here is the message I received when I woke up this morning:

“I’m interested in what you have to say.. but honestly, you tweet too much & dilute your msgs.. considering #Unfollow”

After taking a glance I saw this person had 46 followers, and was following 194 with 26 tweets to her account. (And I wasn’t one of her followers) I could easily have dismissed her, let her unfollow and gone on my merry way with 1 less follower which would put me at 20,280 instead of 20,281

Instead, I stopped tweeting and started doing some research, now I know precisely how often and what I tweet since I went to a lot of trouble to set it up, gather the information, write the posts etc. But the one thing I hadn’t really taken a look at was the effectiveness of a post (as determined by the number of clicks in relation to the frequency of posts). I have been posting every 7 – 15 minutes and my posts fall into 6 categories.

1.       Conversations

2.       Quotes I like

3.       SEO tips

4.       Blog Posts related to internet marketing

5.       Re-Tweets

6.       Affiliate links or promotional links

So I spent the morning analyzing click through rate statistics and analyzing my own twitter stream and stats that I’ve compiled and come up with some interesting discoveries, the first being that I have indeed been tweeting too frequently and because of it, losing my messages effectiveness.

The second thing of note is that there appear to be two optimal durations you should be tweeting for you businesses effectiveness. Sending messages between 24 and 58 minutes apart resulted in a much higher CTR (click thru rate) than when sending with greater or lesser frequency. The second most responsive timing fell between 58 min. and 86 min or roughly once every hour to hour and a half. This second time frame was only about 8% less effective than when tweeting every 30 minutes or so.

Now what this means for me is that instead of tweeting every 7 to 10 minutes, I’m going to have to cut back and tweet anywhere from 24 – 58 minutes which will drive the quantity of tweets from between 144 and 206 tweets a day to between 25 – 60 a day, but increase its effectiveness. (Not to mention uncluttering my follower’s feeds!)

The lesson we can learn from this is that even one customer, one fan, or follower should have a voice and should be considered in the efforts of keeping your business fresh and responsive while allowing it to adapt to the ever changing climate that is Social Media and the Net!
