The Pros and Cons of Echo Chambers in Social Media

The Pros and Cons of Echo Chambers in Social Media

Let’s face it; we are all completely obsessed with social media. I’m extremely guilty of this; not a day passes when I haven’t checked my Facebook (several times!), fired off a few tweets and had a browse through Pinterest. However, I recently read a blog post by Ciaran Norris in which he questions whether the internet has in essence become a big echo chamber- we hear what we want and do not venture far from our own personal safety nets where people share our opinions and beliefs. He argues that debate is dead due to this evolution of online media. A really interesting read, that got me thinking; what is the impact of these echo chambers on social media networks?

When you take a step back and look at it, it would seem that the big social networks are inherently designed to allow these echo chambers to form; on Facebook you only see news from your friends, the people whom you have decide to allow into your community therefore have some shared interest or relationship with. Likewise on Twitter, you choose who to follow and interact with.  It could be argued that social media sites such as StumbleUpon and Pinterest somewhat attempt to alleviate this, allowing us to find new and interesting things. However, I don’t think these sites are as free from echo chambers as you would hope.  You can set preferences and interests on StumbleUpon and follow boards and people on Pinterest that interest you.

So what does this mean for social media? My initial reaction was one of horror! I have always believed that the internet is a brilliant way to discover new and exciting things and broaden our horizons, not become stuck parroting each other’s views and staying where we feel safe in the knowledge that our views and ideals are the consensus. Where is the innovation and interest?

However, after closer inspection, I believe there are both pros and cons to the echo chamber effect- we should be aware of both of these before deciding whether they are bad or good for the social media.

The cons of echo chambers are clear to perceive:

  • We are less likely to find new and interesting articles and opinions on the internet, decreasing interesting  debate and discussion
  • We are so embroiled in our own social media echo chamber that it might become detrimental if we are utilizing our social media networks to promote a business; I have seen businesses become so excited about getting involved with social media that they forget to target their customers, rather engaging in echo chambers with others in their field.
  • Social media is completely dependent upon seeing something that someone you follow has followed, Retweeted or liked;  if we restrict ourselves to these safe little communities how can we find anything completely new? This could prove very problematic for businesses trying to get the word out about their company.

Yet, I think that if you are using social media as a business, there are some very distinct pros to be found from echo chambers:

  • Find the echo chamber communities of your customers and engage with them. This could bring a whole new range of clients to your business. Find the most frequent tweeter or poster and communicate with them, meaning information about your company may filter more quickly to those less active members
  • Communicate with key players in your field of business. As long as you do not ignore your customers, engaging in the community of the big fish in your field could be invaluable for advice, tips and ideas.

I think that echo chambers are interesting in both good and bad ways for social media and internet usage.  When used cleverly, this effect of social media could be a brilliant marketing tool. Just be careful not to let them take over your internet usage; keep investigating fresh and exciting things and engaging with your customers.

Having a Can-Do attitude

Having a Can-Do attitude

Launching any type of business can be a daunting task, and when it comes to internet based businesses this can be doubly so. Because of the low startup involved many people think at first glance starting an e-business is as simple as setting up a website and then waiting for the money to roll in.

While I’m absolutely a huge supporter of launching an internet based business, I think it’s important for people to realize that there will be work involved in not only the concept and planning of an online business, but the even more important follow through that goes along with it.

Depending on your previous work/life history you may or may not have the technical skills needed to accomplish the various tasks that come with owning an online property. Writing, Marketing, Advertising, and SEO are only a few of the skills you’ll be wanting to pick up.

The good news is there is nothing online that you can’t learn. Even better, you can usually learn it from those who have come before you, and mastered the skill out of their own necessity. There will of course be skills you simply aren’t great at, or have no interest in whatsoever, and it’s ok to outsource those and stick to the ones you do have an aptitude, or liking for.

The first step in your learning journey is having a can-do attitude that allows you to know that there are no “super-duper” secrets to this whole internet marketing thing. Simply choose one aspect to focus on at a time, and the “let your fingers do the walking”. (Using Google, not the telephone book of course)

This attitude needs to follow you through the entire life of your business, because even after you’ve mastered multiple internet skills, you’ll still run into situations where you find yourself at a loss.

- I have writers block, I won’t be able to write anything today!

- That site is PR 6 There is no way I can compete with him!

- They’ve been online for 12 years, I can’t compete!

And so on, and so on! This is a unique day we are living in, and more and more we are seeing small businesses, or even individuals competing, and even out doing larger corporations that have been around forever, and have much deeper pockets simply because the smaller businesses are more nimble, and are reacting to changes taking place in the marketplace as they happen.

These individuals are highly connected, and highly engaged with social media, and social networks, while for many of the larger titans social media came almost as an afterthought.

So no matter what the situation or circumstance you find yourself in, know that you can do what it takes, and you DO have what it takes to succeed!

How To Market Internet Videos For Your Online Marketing Strategies

How To Market Internet Videos For Your Online Marketing Strategies

Online marketers have been looking to Internet video lately to spice up their marketing mix, but how do you actually market Internet videos? Do you need to pay for a ‘Promoted Video’ status on YouTube? Do you need to fork out thousands of pounds to advertise on ‘On Demand’ Television programs? Or are there much simpler and affordable ways to market Internet videos?

The following article tackles how brands, businesses and bloggers of all niches and sizes can market Internet videos for their online marketing strategies effectively and cheaply.

Use Internet Videos Search Engine Optimisation Power
The biggest way to make an Internet video successful is by getting online users to see it, and the only way to do so, is to allow your video to be found quickly and easily. How you do this all comes down to getting your Internet video ranked highly in the search engine results.

For this you’ll need to start thinking about the two biggest search engines on the web today; Google and YouTube. Since Google’s introduction of the Universal Search in 2007, YouTube videos have been able to impact the Page 1 search engine results on Google rather well. What this means is, while YouTube is the number two search engine, its video content can impact Page 1 of Google, which gives you a great reason to focus your Search Engine Optimisation strategies on YouTube.

To use the full power of YouTube’s SEO you’ll need to first and foremost upload your video to YouTube. When using YouTube always give your videos Tags, Descriptions and Titles that contain your keywords and phrases. Uploading Closed Captions (Transcripts) can also provide very SEO friendly text data that can help bring your videos up in the search engine results.

For those users who don’t like the idea of using any platform other than their website, you can embed YouTube videos onto your own site, and still generate a great deal of SEO value. The secret to generating Internet video SEO power when you’re embedding video content, is to make use of Sitemaps. When you submit as Sitemap of your embedded video content you are basically telling Google that your video content is on that particular webpage in order for Google to flag it up in its search results.

Harness The Power Of Social Media
Marketing Internet video doesn’t have to cost the earth, and in fact one of the cheapest ways to do so is actually the most powerful. Social medias are online platforms that can give any piece of video content the chance to be enjoyed by an almost limitless audience, and generate real viral potential.

So how do you marketing effectively on social medias? Each social media website be it Twitter, Google+ or LinkedIn have different audiences to engage, and different marketing opportunities to use, but here is a breakdown of some of the best practices to use for Internet marketing video productions on social media platforms:

Twitter: That pesky blue bird is hard platform to crack. Unlike other social media platforms Twitter won’t bring up a video thumbnail, which means you only have your Tweet and your hyperlink to catch your Followers eye. The best way to make the most of this is to make your Tweets as persuasive, curious and engaging as possible. Also it’s always good to contact individual Followers through @’s and Direct Messages to build up relationships with your Followers. The reason for this is so when your Tweet does grace their Newsfeeds they will be sure to take notice of it, and to take some form of action towards it.

Facebook: Facebook may be causing a few stirs for better and for worse with its recent changes, but it is fundamentally one of the best social media platforms for marketing there is. Facebook offers great sharing opportunities; it allows you to post your content to Pages, Groups and individuals interested in your niche. There are far more avenues to build relationships on Facebook than on any other with Wall posting, Liking, Messages, Video Chats, Tagging etc, which can help make you more visible as a user, get your content receiving more interaction, and gain you more Subscribers.

Google+: Without causing too much of a stir, it must be said that Google+ is an awful lot like Facebook, but with one huge marketing advantage. Google+ offers what can be deemed as sector specific marketing opportunities. They may be known universally as ‘Circles’, but let’s think outside the box. By organising your contacts into these Circles you can take specific marketing approaches for each Circle community, in order to market your Internet video effectively in each Circle. This means you can express and covey yourself, your brand and your business in particular ways to particular individuals, which is a very powerful tool to have at your disposal.

LinkedIn: LinkedIn is very much a professional social media affair, and as such you should use it to approach key figures in your niche and converse with influential thought leaders. There aren’t many LinkedIn users who promote their own content in their status updates, but Groups and Discussions are known to make use of them for particular purposes. The Connections you make on LinkedIn will help you to get your video content shared by users other social media profiles, be it Twitter, Facebook or Google+.

YouTube & Vimeo: Never forget, video hosting sites like YouTube and Vimeo are also video sharing sites. This means the video content they host was born to be shared and interacted with. Both sites offer the opportunity of Commenting and Liking content, and allow for users to communicate with one another in a variety of ways. Use these social abilities to your advantage to help get your content more and more interaction, and perhaps even gain those powerful social media shares.

Utilise The Power Of Video Tracking
The success of an Internet video marketing strategy can only ever be determined by the goals it has set out to achieve. Tracking the performance of an Internet video campaign is essential to the entire process of implementing an online marketing strategy. Whether you’re tracking social media growth, website traffic generation or merely just video views, all such factors need to be measured throughout the duration of your online marketing campaign.

Here are some fantastic ways to keep an eye on the performance of your Internet video:

Hoot Suite & Facebook Insight: Facebook Insight costs nothing to implement, all you need to have is a Page for your brand, business or blog. Once you’ve set up a Page you can track everything from how many Likes it has to how many users are talking about you on the Facebook site. Hoot Suite on the other hand, doesn’t come free, but it does collect a lot more data. Hoot Suite forms the home-hub of all your social media data, whether you’re on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn etc, and lets you post status updates on any profile from the platform too.

Google Analytics: Google Analytics is perhaps the best free tool out there for monitoring website traffic, keyword performance and conversion rates. Although there is a Premium package available, small companies won’t ever need to go any further than the traditional free model. Google Analytics will inform you if your video is generating any traffic, where your videos Internet placement is having the biggest effect i.e. on your website or on your YouTube Channel, and how many viewers actually converted into sales leads. It’s a very powerful free tool to use if your campaign is very sales driven.

YouTube Insight & Tube Mogul: If you are determining the success of your Internet video marketing strategy by viewership, than free tools like YouTube Insight and Tube Mogul are perfect. Such tools allow you to track your views, discover at what point in your videos users are turning your content off, where in the world your video is being seen, and how much attention is being given to your video content. These types of data are great for tracking brand awareness, which is essential for creating an online presence for any bloggers, business or brand.

Summary
¬There you have it, your essential guide to marketing Internet video in your online marketing strategies. By nailing all three areas, from making your content easy to find, marketing it on the most popular platforms and monitoring its success, you’ll be sure to be well on your way to marketing your Internet video successfully and cheaply on the web.

Is an Online Degree in Internet Marketing Right for You?

Is an Online Degree in Internet Marketing Right for You?

Internet marketing—there’s no doubt that it’s a booming industry.  As companies (both large and small) continue to rely on online campaigns to capture the interest of consumers using the internet to purchase products and or services, the need for internet marketers will just continue to grow. Maybe that’s why so many individuals are now interested in pursuing e-marketing careers. Not to mention that aside from stability, the pay is pretty decent as well; you can earn as much as a $40,000 starting salary.

The recent spike in interest however is creating fierce job competition in this area. While a formal education will most certainly help an individual land a job in this competitive field—according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics employers favor bachelor and master degree holders— some are not able to attend college due to certain obligations. For example, they may already have fulltime jobs or have a family to take care of.  One plausible idea that provides flexibility however is pursuing an online internet marketing degree. To learn more about this option, continue reading below.

How does an Online Internet Marketing Degree Differ with a Traditional One?

Essentially the only thing that differs is the method of learning—you still have a professor, engage with classmates, have tests and need to purchase text books to successfully complete assignments. But you “attend” classes on your own time and communicate via emails, chat rooms and video chat. In a way, online classes are more designed for those who can work independently. So if this isn’t your style-of learning, you might not want to consider this option. Cost is about the same too. But since students don’t need to drive to campus and can conserve gas and don’t have to spend money on added expenses like housing and meal plans, it can save you a bundle.

What Will I Learn? That said, those pursuing an online degree in internet marketing will learn all of the same concepts that a traditional degree seeker will learn. Thus, you can expect to take courses that will teach you how to effectively use marketing strategies and techniques to create marketing campaigns for a variety of clients. While specific class titles will vary depending on the program you choose to enroll in, online students can expect to take fundamental business classes along with courses in the following subjects: statistics, public relations, computer languages, Web design, e-commerce, search engine optimization, social media and affiliate marketing just to name a few.

How Long will it Take to Complete a Program? Just like when pursuing a traditional bachelor’s degree, an online internet marketing degree program should take a fulltime student about four years to complete. While there are in fact some accelerated programs available, they are far and in between. That said, it’s important that you don’t get duped by a fraudulent online school that promises an accelerated bachelor’s degree in a year or so. These institutions just want to steal your money. When researching schools and programs, it’s important that you check to make sure that it is either nationally or regionally accredited—this is the only way to ensure that you are enrolling in a legitimate online program or school. There are various ways to check for a school’s accreditation. The first is to use the Department of Education’s Database. Note that the Department of Education does not officially give accreditation, so not every school may be on the list. But a sure-fire way to test an online school’s legitimacy is to see if it offers Federal financial aid. Only legitimate schools are allowed to do this.

What Can I Do with an Online Internet Marketing Degree? Those that earn an accredited online internet marketing degree can do so much. While some opportunities are based on degree level earned and previous experience, some job titles to consider are the following: SEO specialist, Web content developer, marketing manager, search analyst and media director.

Internet Marketing for Dummies

When it comes to internet marketing there are a few well known facts that many of us seem to ignore, or overlook often to our own detriment. By implementing the basics early on and creating a solid marketing foundation, you’re chances of success increase dramatically.

A Plan:

First thing you’re going to need, even before a domain and website is a plan! You need a complete plan that includes every single aspect you can think of concerning the structure, launch, and growth of your business. Knowing where you’re heading will make it a thousand times easier to get yourself there.

Goals:

Every successful marketer, and in fact every successful entrepreneur will tell you how important goal setting, monitoring, and achievement are to the continued growth of any business or endeavor. Goals can generally be broken down into short, medium, and long term goals, but since these are YOUR goals, they can look and feel any way you choose.

I myself choose to have daily, monthly, annual, and then long term goals. This way I can see at a glance if I’m on track to achieve them, or need to invest more time or resources, or perhaps come up with a new solution all together. Remember, these documents are yours, and can be fluid and flexible in nature. The true power within them is creating and acting upon them.

A Revenue Model

Now while this might sound simple (we did call it internet marketing for dummies) enough for some reason it gets overlooked by more people than you might think. If you are looking to earn a living from the internet, you have to have some sort of product or service to sell. These products don’t even have to be your own, and including affiliate income is perhaps one of the easiest ways to get started making money online.

Traffic

We all need traffic to our websites and offers, and getting it usually amounts to good old fashioned hard work, mixed in with some high quality content. There are very few “tricks” involved here, but the effort will need to be put forth if you’re going to be profitable.

Generally speaking your traffic will come from four main sources, and you can focus your efforts on those in order to realize the best return on your investment which will usually be time.

-          Search Engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, and others)

-          Social Media (Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Etc.)

-          Social Bookmarking Sites (Stumbleupon, Digg, Delicious, and others)

-          Branding Efforts (direct, guest posting, blog commenting, forum participation, etc.)

I could go into more detail on each of these, but honesty each one could and has been the topic for an entire eBook. I’d suggest investing the time in educating yourself fully on each aspect above in order to capitalize on the vast amount of visitors that are actively seeking a product or website, just like yours!

Now while the title might be “Internet Marketing for Dummies”, truth be told, Internet marketing is for just about anyone looking to earn either a little, or a lot of money online. If you go into it with the mentality that this is a business like any other and requires more than just a website, and some luck, chances are you’ll start enjoying those payments that come in while you’re awake, asleep, or even on holidays!

Good luck to all of you!

Is Twiends Dead?

twiends

With a slow launch back in December of 2009, Twiends started to see an explosive growth in both traffic and users in March of 2010. The explosion of traffic had people of all social networks flocking to join in order to expand their social reach, as well as their social networks.

Marketers and individuals alike could choose to offer credits in the form of seeds (I’m assuming one of the larger social sites took offence at the word credits) in exchange for other users to do any one of the following:

  1. Follow them on Twitter
  2. “Like” their fan page on Facebook
  3. Watch their video on YouTube
  4. Visit their website for a predetermined time

Users were able to build up their credits by also participating in the above activities or buy purchasing them directly from the website for upwards of $599.95 for 50,000 seeds. With 50,000 seeds you could reasonably expect to grow your twitter followers (or fans, hits, views) by about five to ten thousand.

  • 50,000 seeds paying out 5 seeds and accounting for the 30% drop rate most users are experiencing would result in 7,000 followers on Twitter, “likes” on Facebook, hits on your site, or views on your video.

2011 wasn’t a great year for Twiends, it seems it signaled the beginning of the end, and while they are still struggling to find something for all those users to do, it simply doesn’t appear to be the reality.

2011 saw Google step in and shut them down as far as the website tab was concerned. Google penalized them for facilitating what in its eyes was nothing more than a service that could potentially get millions of AdSense accounts banned for using their traffic. (Goes against Google’s Terms of Service)

June 17th saw the removal of the Facebook features after Facebook banned them from continuing to use the API needed for them to continue. I think it was at this point that many users started to realize that the Twiends experience was coming to a close. There was a noticeable drop in traffic following this event.

Less than a month later, on July 11th users who logged in quickly noticed that there was another missing tab in the navigational panel. After 24 hours where users were unable to post in the support forum regarding the issue, Twiends issued this statement:

“Hi all, we unfortunately had to remove seeds from the YouTube feature. We’ll have an update on the issue next week. Thanks for your understanding. Dave”

While it’s unclear why they lost this latest tab and feature (Google does own YouTube) this will likely be the final straw for users, and unless they are able to quickly find another viral method  for growing something that doesn’t include Facebook, YouTube, or Google they will most likely fizzle out into a shadow of their former selves.

Surprisingly Twitter who is always quick to ban developers from using their API in a way that they deem against the “user experience” has left Twiends alone to their own devices. I suppose now that they are the only feature left, Twitter may start to pay a little more attention to them, and if they take their cue from Google and Facebook, we could see the end of them all together!

5 changes that you need to make to your blog before starting guest posting?

Guest posting

Guest posting has become quite popular during recent times as internet marketer look for some newer ways to promote their blog. But did you know that there are some changes that you can make to your own blog in order to maximize the benefits that you can derive from guest blogging? In this article I will be speaking about 5 interesting changes that you can make to your site in order to help you benefit from guest blogging.

Introduce yourself

For someone to visit your site they need to have been impressed by your guest post. In the majority of cases they will want to learn more about you and as such will be interested to visit your About page. This is where the main problem lies. Many bloggers don’t have a proper introduction and worst, they may have left the original WordPress page in place.

If you are serious about promoting your site, you should make it a point to have a proper introduction on your site where you might be introducing your blog, your contact details and also a photo. This can help you build a lasting relationship with your readers.

Social Media buttons

Guest blogging will allow you to experience a surge in your traffic and you might want to seize this opportunity to build your own social media presence. For this reason you might want to place your social media buttons in some highly visible place. Do not leave just a text link as many other bloggers do as this can hinder your chance of developing your social media sites.

Template is important

It is important that you pay attention to your blog template. Like it or not people judge a lot of things by appearance and it might therefore be important that you give a professional feel to your blog. If you are using a CMS then there are plenty of premium themes that are available at affordable prices to help you revamp your site. Alternatively you might want to pay a freelancer a small amount so as to develop a professional template for your site.

Hosting and Site Issues

It is important that you consider your site as well as your host before starting your guest post campaign. In the majority of cases you will expect a surge in traffic towards your blog and it might be a good idea that you ensure that your host can cater for this sudden increase in visitors.

Quality Content

Before starting guest posting you need to ensure that you have enough quality content on your site. As said above people will only click all the way to your site if they are genuinely interested in your writing and as such it might be important that you provide them with more articles. This is why I don’t recommend people with new blogs to start guest posting. Make sure that you have enough quality posts before starting your guest blogging campaign if you want to reap maximum benefits.

Success Series Goal – Fans

fans

Just like the followers on Twitter another aspect to my social media marketing campaign is to have a large fan base on Facebook. To date Twitter has been my stronger performer and is also my third largest source of traffic to my blog.

Having a large fan page can mean not only more traffic, but more revenue as well when a product is added into the mix. Just like an email list where you can send out a special promotion or offer for your latest product, so too can you post on your fan page wall, and send out an update to the thousands of people who have “liked” your page.

I originally set my sights on 20,000 fans or so because I saw that Darren over at Problogger had just over 20,000 and it seemed like a big number at the time. I’ve gone back and adjusted it to match my twitter goal of 58,000 just because I felt it was something I could achieve and like most I’m a big believer in more is better. (Even when it isn’t always the case)

Growing a fan page is similar to a twitter profile, you need to make it easy for people to not only find you, but also offer them a reason to “like” you. Here are a few of methods you can use to grow your own fan page.

-          First off, set a goal that you’d like to achieve as far as fans and growth are concerned. Goals can act as great motivators, and also help to keep our attentions focused on topics we’ve set as important to our businesses.

-          Customize your profile; use high quality graphics, and landing pages. Offer your fans something they can’t get on other pages so that they are more inclined to not only become fans, but also interact with you which will help to drive even more “likes” to your page from other potential fans.

-          Set a custom vanity URL as soon as you hit the 25 fan requirement, it makes you more easily findable, and lends itself to a more professional and branded image.Include a Facebook widget on your blog or website to make it easier for people to “like” your page. Include a request for them to join you there.

fan page

-          Link your blog and twitter account to your fan page so that it’s updated with all your tweets and blog posts which will result in more traffic being sent to other areas of your business that are also important in your growth.

-          Use Twiends to advertise your fan page on, it’s a great tool that can be used either free or paid depending on your circumstances and whether you have more time than money, or more money than time.

-          Facebook ads are a great way to get some tremendous growth to your page, and when done correctly can be managed for less than .50 cents a fan.

-          Google ads are also a great way for driving fan growth but while you can get traffic for around .12 – .20 cents if you know what you’re doing the percentage of people who click vs. the percentage of people who join is much lower than with Facebook ads.

-          Make it easy for people who are on your email list to connect with you on all your social networks.

-          Include your Facebook in your email signature file so that people receiving emails from you on a regular basis can easily find your fan page, and support you by “liking” it.

-          Ask your current Facebook friends. I’d suggest only using this once as it can get annoying to constantly be bombarded by page requests from people.

-          Use contests to build awareness around your fan page, and offer up prizes once in a while. It’s not only a great way to drive fan growth, but is also a great way to reward your existing fans also.

-          When commenting on other fan pages, do so as your page rather than as your personal account. If you’re not sure how, simply login to your fan page, and in the top right corner you’ll see the option to use Facebook as either yourself, or your page. Remember! Always post responsibly on other people’s walls, and don’t spam them with the sole intention of trying to attract their fans to your page.

Depending on how serious you are about growing a following on Facebook you can use as many methods as you’d like to promote your page. Obviously the more places you can be found online the better. If you haven’t already “liked” my fan page, please consider doing so now. Also if you’d like to promote your own fan page, website or offer then I have a special arrangement with my “Top commentators” allowing them to post freely on my wall. Simply be a regular commenter on my blog and as a way of saying thank you, you’re entitled to leave comments and links on my fan page witch currently has around 32,000 fans.

Twiends for Twitter

Stronger together

I wrote a few weeks ago about using Twiends to grow your social network, and allow you choose between either growing your Fan page, YouTube channel, or Twitter followers. Quite of you took advantage of it right away and started to grow your networks, but I had a few people say they didn’t think that it would work.

They were of the opinion that since I already had 20,000 followers on Twitter that I was using that number to influence my review of Twiends. Fair enough, here are my growth stats for the last month.

On March 28th I had exactly 20,848 people following me on Twitter and if you check my stats I’ve had around 20,000 for some time now. Fast forward a month to today and you’ll see I now have 29,330 followers and a prediction for 38,695 in the course of another 30 days if I continue with this rate of growth.

Now personally I’d of been happy with 1000 or so new followers in a month’s time, but I’m not going to say no to this kind of growth. Having a large audience is usually a benefit in my industry.

It’s important to note that I’ve also never paid more than 2 credits for a follower, so my growth while consistent is still likely lower than what other could expect. I have two monitors so I usually have the second one open to their site, and I’ll watch the YouTube video’s and build up credits that way.

You can also choose the fast route of purchasing credits to use; it all depends on whether you have more time than money, or more money than time. Me, I have lots of time and it’s easy to build credits while I’m working on my primary monitor.

If having a large social network is something that is important to you or your business, I’d definitely recommend signing up for free account, and taking advantage of the millions of other users networking on there.

One word of caution though, if you follow back everyone who follows you I’d suspend that while you are using the service. Unfortunately with anything like this system there will always be spammers, and fake accounts and I’ve noticed more than my fair share. Since I’m paying for the follow I don’t really feel obligated to follow back anyway unless they are someone I’d normally follow and interact with.

For free Twiends credits you can sign up to their newsletter and receive 50 free credits.

See you there!

How to be an organised blogger

staying organized

One of the most common misconceptions I come up across when talking to people about blogging is the amount of time it involves. As so many people blog as a hobby, it’s often assumed that blogging is neither difficult nor time-consuming.

The reality is, if you want to make an income from blogging, you need to put in a lot of time and effort. And it’s not as simple as writing a few paragraphs.

When I started blogging, I had a feeling of drowning in a world of fast paced information. It’s difficult to keep up with PRs, news sources and readers, particularly when your blog starts to see some success. Throw social media into the mix and you’ve got a lot to stay on top of.

So, how can you stay organised as a blogger? Here are five tips to get your started.

Create a spreadsheet

I write for a number of blogs, which means I’m often holding many conversations with PRs about content. I’ve created a spreadsheet with a different tab for each blog, planning when each post is scheduled; who a PR contact is if a sample is included and if there’s an embargo on the content. While I might not stick to the schedule 100% of the time, it definitely helps me organise my time and resources better.

Invest in a smartphone

I’m an iPhone addict, as it allows me to blog on the go, take pictures, interact on social media and even check my blog statistics. I’m genuinely surprised when I see a blogger working from a phone that barely allows internet access. Blogging wins over traditional news forums because bloggers can report something as it happens, so you need to have something you can record any information on quickly and easily.

Get acquainted with add ons and productivity tools

There’s a huge variety of add ons and extensions on Firefox and Chrome to help increase your productivity and organisation. Here are a three of my favourites:

Pixlr: Pixlr lets you grab images or screen grabs, edit them within a new tab and save them to your desktop or an online cloud. Handy if you hate the process of download, upload to an image editor, edit, save, upload to your post.

Scribefire: Scribefire lets me create blog posts for a variety of blogs in one place. Easy to format, quick to publish and great for those times

Zemanta: Zemanta is the digital assistant for your blogging. As you type, it will grab images, links, tags and related articles that you can add to your blog post with one click. Brilliant if you hate sourcing content to compliment your blog.

Control your social media and email activities.

I’m very much pro-social media for businesses and bloggers, but it can get in the way too. How often do you find yourself popping over to Twitter or your email, only to find yourself still there 30 minutes later?

We all do it, but there are way to avoid it. Firstly, you might need a reality check on how much time you spend on various sites. There’s a great article over on Mashable rounding up the best Firefox addons that monitor time online, which both track how much time you spend on Twitter and Facebook, and limit them.

Secondly, it might be worth looking at options like Threadsy, that pulls your social media accounts and emails into one place so you can quickly check them both at once.

Thirdly, and this will require some will power if you use it all the time, you might want to set some rules about checking your accounts. For instance, try limiting it to once an hour, or only in the morning, lunchtime and evening.

Accept that you can’t cover everything

It’s easy to stress yourself out if you’ve missed the boat on a particularly hot topic, but you can’t cover everything all the time. Sometimes it’s better to cover the more niche topics, as you’re less likely to have competition in the search rankings for them.
