Tracking Your Link Building Efforts

Tracking Your Link Building Efforts

Google is by and large the best source of free traffic available on the web today, and in order to take full advantage of that traffic we have to pay attention to certain SEO (Search Engine Optimization) aspects which include link building. Generally speaking, the more links, and the more powerful they are, the better the rankings you can expect in the search engines.

Building links usually gets outsourced to SEO “experts” because website and blog owners think there is some secret aspect to the whole process, but truth be told there are plenty of high ranking sites out there that are being run by people just like you. They say “practice makes perfect” and with the repetitive nature of link building you’ll soon be an “expert” yourself.

When building links to your site it’s important to remember that your site is made up of inner pages as well as a homepage. Link generously to all your pages and then interlink within your site to take full advantage of the SEO benefits that come with those links.

Link diversity is something that pertains to building an assortment of links rather than focusing the majority of your time on one you might find “easy” or “comfortable”. Many people get in the habit of only using commenting as a means of getting links and totally miss out on the numerous other methods out there.

Here are a few of the links you can look at using in your own link building campaigns:

  • Blog Commenting – Also a great way to get to know other bloggers in your niche.
  • Forum posting – Most forums will allow you a signature that can include a link back to your website or blog, the more you post on those forums the more links you are effectively building from that particular site.
  • Guest Posts – This is definitely one of the best ways to get a link from many of the higher profile sites in your industry. When you consider that companies are paying anywhere from $25.00 to $75.00 or more a month for a simple text link within a blog post you truly start to see the value here.
  • Social Bookmarking – Generally these links aren’t as valuable as some others, but they are relatively easy to obtain, and adding them to your link portfolio is always a good choice.
  • Directories – Now there are premium directories like Yahoo, DMOZ, Eaton, BOTW that carry a decent amount of SEO benefit all on their own, but there are also free and low quality ones that require literally thousands to be of any use to you at all. I’d suggest investing in at least two of the premium ones, and as many of the others as you’ve got the patience to build. (Tip: RoboForm will fill out the fields on directory sites making your job a lot easier)
  • Link Exchanges – This is when blogger A links to blogger B, and blogger B reciprocates. Generally you’ll be able to choose the keyword and anchor text to be used which goes a lot further than a link using just your name, or domain name.
  • Paid Links – This is where you pay for the link on a site (usually on a monthly or annual basis). These links are against Google’s TOS (terms of service) and can get you penalized if someone reports you, or if you’re found out some other way. I’d recommend staying away from these.
  • Web 2.0 Properties are a great place to expand your reach while at the same time getting a link that can then be improved (by building links to the property itself). Squidoo, Hubpages, and Blogger are just a few of the literally hundreds that are available to use freely.

Now there are many more links a person can get such as software download sites (create, or have a piece of handy software designed and then upload it to the hundreds of high ranking software sites that are online. Images, Video’s, eBooks and more can all be used to generate links to your website. The only limits are your imagination and creativity.

All this link building effort should be tracked so that you can see at a glance where and how your links are being placed as well as the effect they are having on your site’s rankings. A few things you might want to keep track of are:

  • Date – this is the date the link went live, you can also note dates you checked to see if the link was still in place. (You’d probably only do this for your top 100 most valuable links)
  • URL – Location or website the link is on.
  • Contact or email of the person or site owner responsible for placing the link.
  • Anchor text used to link back to you.
  • PageRank, or authority of the domain, or individual page. (A good trick is to build links to these links in order to increase their PageRank. Most website owners will also be improving their sites which will eventually trickle down to the individual articles themselves so over time all your links could become much more valuable and powerful.
  • Where the link is pointing on your site. (Homepage, individual post, etc.)
  • Notes Section – As you notice increases in keyword rankings or PageRank you can jot them down here.

There might be other aspects you’d like to track and there are no hard and fast rules, but the simple act of tracking your links serves to act as a performance document and tracking sheet. It also tends to lend itself toward motivation, because most of us like to see measurable results increasing over time as a direct result of our efforts. And last it also serves to legitimize your blog, or business. Inventory lists, operations manuals, sales tracking sheets, etc. all show that an individual is taking his or her blog seriously.

Getting Indexed Fast in Google

A lot of people seem to think it takes weeks (or even months) to get indexed in Google, but that’s just not true.  Almost anyone can get his or her site crawled and indexed in two weeks or less – sometimes you can even be listed in the Google index in as little as a few hours!

There are several ways to get indexed quickly.  All of them involve getting links to your site on other sites that have high PageRank, or sites that are updated often and get crawled frequently by search engine spiders.

You don’t have to pay to do this.  There are plenty of ways to get these types of links to your site without paying a penny. One of the easiest ways to get indexed quickly is to ping your site.  You don’t have to own a blog to ping your site at places like pingoat.com or Pingomatic.com.

Just add your site’s name and URL, and leave the RSS feed link blank.  (It’s not necessary.)  Sometimes this technique alone can get you indexed in a day or two. Next, you should submit your link to various social bookmarking sites.

These sites get crawled several times a day, so they can be a very good way to get your own site crawled and indexed quickly.  You should get an account at all of the major bookmarking sites.  Don’t miss StumbleUpon, Digg, Furl, del.ico.us, and Slashdot.

Press releases can be very helpful in getting your site crawled and indexed quickly.  Most of the more popular press release sites have good PageRank, get crawled often, and can even get your press release posted on a number of different sites that borrow news from the PR directories.  Sometimes it can be worth submitting a press release simply for the ease and speed of being indexed.

Article marketing is another way to get indexed fast.  Submitting an article or two can also help you get backlinks, better PageRank, and targeted traffic to your site.  A lot of article directories have very good PageRank, so it definitely has benefits other than just quick indexing.

Blog commenting can be a very good way to get indexed quickly.  You’ll need to find blogs that don’t have the “nofollow” tag, because blogs that have “nofollow” won’t let search engines crawl the links anyway.

This is debated by SEO experts – some saying the “nofollow” tag doesn’t even matter, since some search engine spiders ignore them anyway. Others claim you might get a small amount of traffic from the blogs themselves, but “nofollow” blogs will do nothing to help you get indexed faster.

You should also make sure you do all you can to maximize the ability of spiders to crawl your site.  You should have links that are easy to find and follow, use text links instead of only image links, don’t use Flash or image maps unless you also have text links for spiders to follow, and make sure you keep your site as clean as possible.  Having too many links on your main page can confuse spiders, and your site may not be indexed properly.

Forums often get crawled on a regular (daily) rotation since the content is updated often.  Popular forums have had posts on their site show up on Google just minutes after they’re posted!  It’s very common for posts on very popular forums to be in Google in under 24 hours.  Posting a small link in your signature on some of these forums can help you get your site indexed quickly.

Finally, you can exchange links with other webmasters in your niche.  Not only is this a great way to build backlinks, but if their sites get crawled often, you’ll be adding to the chance that your site will be crawled and indexed quickly, too.  Link exchanges won’t penalize your site, either – unless you amass too many, too soon – so stick with organic growth (a few a day) and it won’t put up any red flags for the search engines.

The Importance of Social Bookmarking

Social Bookmarking

Virtually every way to make money online, be it an e-business, a blog, internet marketing campaign, or so on, requires traffic in order to succeed. Traffic relies heavily on several key factors, perhaps the most important of which is the number of users coming in from search engines. Therefore, increasing your search engine rank (how early your site appears in the results pages for a given key phrase) plays a large role in dictating how much traffic your site gets. Social bookmarking is a tool commonly used to improve the amount of traffic to websites. Here, we’ll go over how to increase your search engine rank using social bookmarking, as well as other ways in which social bookmarking can benefit your web site.

Social bookmarking refers to a method of sharing links, news, and other information on a given site. Commonly used social bookmarking sites include digg, reddit, StumpleUpon, and del.icio.us. These sites allow users to share everything from entire websites to individual articles, videos, music, and much more. By marketing your website on social bookmarking sites, you enable it to become something that people share with each other, branching out and expanding over time.

This internet marketing technique is known as viral marketing, because of the self perpetuating nature of that which is being marketed. It is a highly efficient form of advertising, and is also tremendously cost effective. This cost effectiveness comes from the fact that the marketing campaign allows users to promote the product or website on their own, and other than the costs for the original creation of the content being marketed, the growing campaign is free. By taking advantage of the way social bookmarking sites work, you can create a small piece of seed content (a video, for example) and then allow the popularity of that content to explode as more people find and share it.

Viral marketing through social bookmarking sites essentially takes the same tactics as a word-of-mouth advertising campaign and puts it in a setting to which hundreds of millions of people have access. If you are looking for a new way to promote products or content on a website, there are few methods more effective than viral marketing. Social bookmarking sites play a key role in developing a high level of exposure and hype for any upcoming or existing product, all for a very small amount of cost to the marketer.

Backlinks: Why You Need Them, And Where to Get Them!

Building backlinks

Why do I need backlinks?

Who cares if you have any backlinks! Well, actually the search engines do… quite a lot actually.
They take into consideration, how many sites link to your webpage, and consider it to be a kind of “vote” for your site. I mean who would link to a site that had no useful info on it, or provided no value?

Another thing that gets factored into the equation is the quality of those backlinks pointing at you. Do you have 30 PR0 sites linking to you? Perhaps you have twenty or so links from sites on the same IP? (All from your other websites, it’s assumed) Perhaps you have mastered the art of blog commenting to the 9th degree, and have 10,000 of those, and only those?

It’s a good idea to have a healthy mix of backlinks; your goal here is to target three things.

  1. Quality –you can’t beat a high PR backlink from an authority site in your niche after all.
  2. Relevance – having a site in your niche link to you carries more weight than having one from a website on a totally different topic.
  3. Quantity – Do you know how to outrank your competition? It’s easy! Build more quality links than them!

Building backlinks should be an ongoing part of any website’s marketing plans. Do some keyword research, calculate just what you need in order to rise to the next level, or SERP (Search Engine Ranking Position) and decide on the number of links you’re going to build on a monthly or weekly basis. If you’re not comfortable you can always outsource work like this to other companies, or even other website owners.
I have to be constantly building backlinks for my own sites, so I have no problem taking on a handful of clients each month, and adding their site into my own backlink building program.

“Remember! The more roads that lead to your website or blog the more potential traffic you’ll receive”

Where Do I find Backlinks?

There is one question that I seem to answer at least once a week.

“Where can I find more backlinks?”

Here are some of the backlinks I personally build for my sites, you can implement some, or all of them depending on your needs. Not all niches will need a ton of backlinks, if your company or website is in a specialized niche with very little competition, you may only need a handful of high quality backlinks to ensure a first page rank.

These are in no particular order, use the one’s you feel most comfortable with.

Forum Links – A good way to build traffic to your site (and pick up some backlinks) is to join a forum in your field, if you start answering questions in an online forum you will soon be considered to be an expert in your field, and people will be inclined to click on your signature link to visit your website.
Add a small link to your site at the bottom in your “signature” (remember to follow the forum rules, and don’t spam simply to get your link out there)

Social Bookmarking – Social bookmarking sites allow us to bookmark our favorite sites, stories, blog posts, pictures, etc, all around the web. Some of the more common one’s that I’m sure you’ve heard of are Digg, Stumbleupon, or Delicious. There are literally hundreds and even thousands more, and at each one you can create a bookmark (which is also a backlink) to your site, as well as any other you find interesting! I receive thousands of visitors a month to each of my sites from just one of the bookmarking sites I’ve listed above. Bookmarking should be a part of everyone’s backlink building strategy!

Article MarketingThis is probably one of the oldest methods for driving traffic, and building backlinks. There are thousands and thousands of article directories on the internet today. How do you get a backlink from them? It’s simple, just submit an article you’ve written, or have the rights to, and voila! You now have a backlink from their directory to your site. Remember, not all directories are created equal, start at the top and work your way down. Choose the highest quality article directories first. Again, decide on your backlink schedule, and build accordingly. Whether or not you decide on submitting to 20 directories or 200 directories a month, the most important thing is to try and stick to a schedule.

“Consistency is the key to a good backlink building strategy!”

Blog Comments – Commenting on blogs in your niche (or others) can also be a great way to build backlinks to your site, or blog. When leaving comments always go for quality over quantity, if you leave a comment that adds value to the discussion, or post then it’s much more likely that someone reading the comment will click through to your website where you will then have the chance to convert them to perhaps becoming loyal readers on your site.

Guest Blogging – Want a backlink from an authority site in your blogs niche? Write a great post and offer it up to the site you’re trying to get a backlink from. It’s  a good idea to start by leaving some decent comments first as the site owner will then have an idea of who you are, and will know that you’ve already been contributing in some fashion already. Remember when you leave comments on a blog, your adding content. Who loves content? Google does! So you can be assured that a blog owner will value the added content and will be more open to the idea of having you guest blog for them. It’s a good idea to offer up your best work at times like these! (Hint – if the article you offer up doesn’t work for one site, keeps it and offer it up to the next blog on your list!)

Directories – There are a vast number of web directories out there.  I take advantage of two different kinds, SEO friendly free directories, and paid directory listings. When looking at paid directories I’ll usually only consider a few like Yahoo, Best of The Web, or Eaton Web Directory. There are also some great free one’s, dmoz is one not to be missed, though in past years it’s been getting much harder to get included into their directory for one reason or another. Always be sure to choose the most relevant category to submit your site to. Directory owners receive dozens of submissions each and every day, and you don’t want them to click the “delete” button, simply because you’ve listed your site in the wrong category. It’s also a good idea to keep a list of sites you’ve submitted to, as well as another for sites you’ve been accepted into.

Press releases – Sending out a press release can be a great way to announce your website to the world. You will end up with backlinks, exposure, traffic, and possibly more sales if done right. It’s also a great way to announce new products or services you’re launching.

And there you have it; these are just a handful of methods you can start using today to build up your backlinks to your blog or website. There are many other one’s out there as well, but I’ll save those for another day!

Once again, thanks for reading, and have a great day!

Warren

How I drive traffic to my website

website trafficPeople are always asking me the best way to generate traffic; they are constantly buying eBooks, courses, and traffic programs to try and do it quicker. Sadly after they’ve done this they are still asking the question.

So, here is a list of things I’ve actually done to promote my site this month. If you implement them, I’m sure they will increase the amount of traffic you recieve, so sooner, some more long term.

Hope it helps.

1.      Submit to directories:

I’ve probably submitted to about 100 directories ranging in page rank 0 to page rank 9. I’ve used to paid directories out of 100. Yahoo, and hotvsnot
Yahoo took about a week to approve me (cost is $299 with no guarantee’s) whereas hotvsnot which is a pr 6 took less than 24 hours to include my site.
Ps. If you’re doing this manually, get roboform you can thank me later! J

2.      Article Marketing:

I’ve used dozens of article directories this month alone; of them all approval seemed to take between an hour to two weeks. Of them all Article Rich at http://www.articlerich.com approved my articles the quickest despite a warning saying it could take some time! Hit these guys up first if you’re in a hurry.

3.      YouTube:

Ok, I didn’t know how to make a video (hey now, that’s not nice… I can hear you laughing) so had someone make a couple for me. Haven’t noticed much in the way of traffic so far, but I’m still hopeful. I know the purpose of the video is to drive traffic to my site, but hey, let’s reverse it. Go visit my video NOW…. (just kidding) now=please! Youtube channel

4.      Social bookmarking:

Ok, I cheated and used a bookmarking service. Seriously, it would have taken me a week to try and do it manually. They charged me less than $100 bucks and submitted my site to over 500 social bookmarking sites. If you’re interested, here’s the link.

5.      Social Media:

Facebook, Twitter, and Squidoo have been my main methods of Social Media sites I’ve been using. Here are a couple of ways I use them to drive extra traffic to my site. 1. Whenever I post on my blog, I update both Facebook, and Twitter to let my friends/followers know. 2. I’ve setup some auto posts using a handy little free website called hootsuite that allows me to schedule “tweets” to go out at predetermined dates and times. I find a good ratio to use is 3 to 1, so basically I’ll send out 3 tweets without including my (or any) link, and 1 that does. This way you don’t come across as spammy.
If you would like to follow us on Twitter you can find us here at www.twitter.com/plrnetmarketing

6.      Blog Commenting:

This one I use sparingly, but whenever I’m visiting a blog and find an article particularly interesting or valuable, I’ll leave a comment for the author with a link to my website. I try to always use “Blog Commenting Etiquette” when posting. 1. Try to add something of value to the discussion. 2. Read the post before commenting (I know, common sense, but you’d be surprised how often this happens). 3. No one word comments (refer to rule number 1). 4. Don’t bold or italicize your entire comment.
Posting on Blogs in related niches is a great way to introduce yourself and your blog to likeminded readers.

7.      Signature file:

Use a signature file in your emails as well as any forum’s you may post on. People are always curious, and may just click to see what your site is all about. Especially if it relates to something they are already interested in.

8.      Make top ten lists like this one:

Some of the most popular posts that get the most traffic, are simple top ten lists related to your particular niche. Try to answer questions people are searching for answers for. Chances are if you’ve looked it up, they’ve looked it up!

9.      Submit your Blog and RSS feed to directories:

If you do a Google search for RSS feed directories, you’ll find lists of RSS and Blog directories where you can submit your site/feed to. In about an hour you can probably submit to about 50 directories.

10.  SEO your site:

Spend some time validating the html on your website, create a sitemap, make sure you have no broken links, and spend a little time optimizing your keywords. All these things will add up, and in the end you’ll start to notice Google sending you more and more traffic. If you can get on the first page of Google, you will definitely see an increase in traffic.

Driving Traffic with Twitter

Twitter Traffic

If you work from home over the internet, either running an e-business, website, or a blog, then you know the importance of having a high volume of traffic. Increasing the traffic to a given website or blog is often the best way to increase the amount of money it makes, be it from advertising revenue or the selling of products. One of the best ways to increase the amount of traffic to a site is through SEO, or search engine optimization. Search engine optimization relies on several different factors, although many of them can be accomplished through the use of social bookmarking sites. One such site, Twitter, has become widely used over the course of the last couple years, and is an excellent way to draw in traffic. Here, we’ll go over a few simple ways you can use Twitter to increase your site traffic.

The nature of Twitter, that is to say the short and sweet posts that anyone can see, makes it ideal for viral marketing and search engine optimization campaigns. In fact, it would be difficult to design a social bookmarking site more perfectly suited to creating large numbers of unique back links.

One of the most effective methods for drawing traffic through Twitter is by creating a viral marketing “seed,” typically a humorous, strange, or otherwise entertaining video or image. This video or image is then posted to Twitter, where it can be seen by millions of people. The viewers who enjoy the seed then repost it, which essentially creates a chain reaction of free advertising for the creator of the viral seed. This devious internet marketing technique is an excellent way to create a highly effective yet very cheap advertising campaign. For reference, see the “Old Spice” deodorant product’s page on Twitter, and you’ll get the picture.

Twitter can also be used for back linking, because of the ease and frequency with which its members create links to virtually any page they find worthwhile. The social bookmarking functions are almost perfect for SEO, and the high number of traffic to many members’ pages mean that the quality of these back links remains quite high. By using Twitter as a source of high quality, persistent, and popular back links, you can dramatically increase the search engine rank (how early in results pages a site appears) of your site, thus increasing the amount of traffic it receives.
