We’ve all heard the saying, “if you’re going to do something, you may as well do it right”, and the same goes for building a business out of your blog. There are a hundred shortcuts that we can take to get where were going, but in the end we’ll find some of those shortcuts actually hurt our businesses. Take the time to build it right from the very beginning, and I assure you, you won’t regret it!
Proper planning is a necessary ingredient for any business, and equally so for your blog. You need to invest the time into researching what it is you plan to blog about so you’re prepared for what comes next. If the top twenty competing sites are all multi-million dollar enterprises, then you can be pretty sure it’s going to be a tough go if you want any of the keywords they are targeting, simply because they most likely out man you in resources as well as finances.
One of my competitors spent over $800,000 in advertising in the previous to me starting my site. I knew this going in, and understood the challenge I’d face going against him. I also knew Wikipedia held the first spot for many of my chosen keywords so that was just one more challenge I’d face trying to rank for those keywords.
In this day and age, the average person can definitely go against the giants, and not only fare ok, but even flourish. The work smarter, not harder adage will definitely come into play in online marketing efforts, and at the end of the day it’s not the person with the most money that wins, but the one with the most skill, and knowledge and who applies that knowledge most consistently.
You might be saying to yourself that they can then just hire an expert to lead their online marketing efforts, but the thing you need to realize is internet marketing is still in it’s infancy, and the number of qualified internet marketers are vastly outnumbered by the corporations that could potentially hire them, most of who are busy building their own online empires, and leaving the corporate world that would recruit them.
Part of “doing things right” would have to also include an educational phase, and since many of the variable are constantly changing and emerging you’ll need to set aside some time to learn the ins and outs of these new methods that crop up. Just a few short years ago, perhaps even more recently, you’d most likely have had no idea how to use Twitter to further your brand, and business goals. Now it is considered an integral part, and you see big names joining on a daily basis. Those brands are already a year behind the times and at an immediate disadvantage until they get under way.
There are some crucial areas of your business that shouldn’t be overlooked if you’re serious at all about succeeding and overtaking those currently in front of you, and already enjoying the sales or visitors you seek. How many back links did you build yesterday? How about the day before? Back link building should be part of your daily/weekly/monthly routine, and you should be tracking where and how you are getting them.
How about sales? How many of yesterday’s visitors did you convert? If the answer was zero, did you work on tweaking any of your sales copy? Did you evaluate what it was that may have gone wrong, or did you simply wait to see what would happen today? If you chose to wait, how long have you been waiting for a sale? STOP WAITING! Go out and figure out what it is they are looking for, what they need in order to convert from visitors to customers, and then implement the changes. Because this is your business, there is nobody above you to keep an eye on profits, so the job falls solely to you.
