Success Series Goal – Product Reviews

product reviews

A large portion of a bloggers income comes in via affiliate products that he either reviews directly or discusses in a blog post indirectly. For example if I’m writing about how to back up your website using your Hostgator CPanel admin area, it’s only natural to include a link to Hostgator, and since I’ve been using them for years and have no problem recommending them as my number one choice for hosting including an affiliate link is a no brainer.

One area that I see myself as being weak in is the fact that I’ve spent very little time over the last year promoting affiliate products and instead focused only on serving up informative articles. I need to strike a healthy balance between the two, because while my readers come by for the content, I’m sure they understand my need to earn a living as well, and by telling them about the products and services that I’ve personally tried, or am using can help them decide whether or not they want to invest in that product/service.

I think for every seven articles that I write on blogging, affiliate marketing, internet marketing, social media, and such I can include one that talks about one of the tools I use with my own business, and include an affiliate link without offending any of my readers. The problem is I haven’t been and my revenues reflect that.

A large part of my time is spent reviewing my competitors’ products, and learning what I want to incorporate into my business, and what I’d like to avoid at all costs. An honest review of a product could help someone who has an interest in it to make the final decision to either a. purchase it or b. pass it over and keep looking for something that will better suit there needs.

Since I’m now in my second year, and this is my “growth” year, I need to focus a little more time and effort on sharing my opinions on a larger number of online products. Ultimately I’d like to have 50 – 100 product reviews completed over the course of the next 12 – 24 months. I think the added income will go a long way toward allowing me to not only reinvest my earning back into my business, but also start pulling a wage from it as well.

Up until this point I’ve used my earnings to build a foundation for my business so that I have a solid position with which to start launching products, services, reviews and such, and I knew going in that I wanted to build something solid and of substance that would continue to grow for many years to come.

Success Series Goal – Affiliate Tracking System

Affiliate Tracking

Today I’m going to tell you about number ten on my list of success ingredients that I’ve set out as being an important part in the success of my blog and business.

Affiliate tracking software allows you to maintain an accurate tracking system that allows you to upload banners and other collateral as well as set tracking links for each affiliate who signs up. This tracking system allows you to keep track of who is selling what product for you, and just how much traffic they are sending your way.

You can offer performance bonuses, implement fraud control, track offline marketing efforts, and run all sorts of reports that tell you why, how and where traffic is coming from as well as commission payouts and much, much more!

You can upload materials to make your affiliates job much easier, and allow them to make more sales which will result in more sales for you, and more importantly more sales for your affiliates who will then be inclined to work even harder for you.

Some of the items you might want to upload and make available to your affiliates are:

-          Banners (I’d go with the five most popular sizes and shapes)

-          Email templates

-          Blog posts

-          Page peels

-          Light boxes

-          Text links

-          Text ads

-          Keyword lists to use to promote the product/service

-          PDF documents

-          Video’s

Most of you are probably familiar with the ClickBank tracking system which takes care of everything for you, but gives you no control over the affiliates themselves and gives you very little freedom. Unlike ClickBank you control all aspects of your affiliate network when you use a software solution and the flexibility you have will more than make up for any additional costs you incur.

For myself I’m getting ready to launch a product/service with a partner and we’ve decided to capitalize on the power of affiliates as a way of getting more exposure than we’d get using only our own resources.

Success Series Goal – Internet Marketing Training Course

One of the things I’ve been wanting to do for a while now is a comprehensive video training course outlining the different aspects of internet marketing and all of the components that are involved so that both new internet marketers, as well as advanced internet marketers can go through it and come away with a ton of knowledge that they can apply immediately to start making money online.

Having your own product goes a long way toward establishing yourself as an authority in your industry, and those who go through your course will know firsthand which tips and tricks you’re using to generate your own online income. The benefits of having a product that is detailed and comprehensive are more than just financial.

Another often overlooked benefit to creating your own digital product is the knowledge you come away with. Using products like Camtasia, Audacity, and others can be a great skill to add to your existing ones for sure.

Putting together a great product is only half the battle, you can have the best course online, but if you haven’t got a solid product launch strategy, chances are only a handful of people will appreciate the course. It’s important to plan out how you intend to get your product in front of as large an audience as you possibly can.

Attracting affiliates to help you promote your new product is another key aspect to a successful launch, and a lot of this is accomplished with planning and preparation. Having all your materials made well in advance ensures your chances of a problem free launch.

Benefits of having your own product:

-          Sets you apart from those without.

-          Gives you credibility

-          Provides you with a way to show off your expertise

-          Is an additional revenue stream for your business

-          You learn about product launches first hand

-          You can build an affiliate army to promote for you

-          You gain experience/expertise in tools you might not otherwise have used

-          And so much more

Going through the process from beginning to end is a lot like learning a new job skill, and effectively makes you more marketable, and since most of you have already made the transition to working for yourselves, it gives you the ability and skills needed to earn more.

Success Series Goal – Fans

fans

Just like the followers on Twitter another aspect to my social media marketing campaign is to have a large fan base on Facebook. To date Twitter has been my stronger performer and is also my third largest source of traffic to my blog.

Having a large fan page can mean not only more traffic, but more revenue as well when a product is added into the mix. Just like an email list where you can send out a special promotion or offer for your latest product, so too can you post on your fan page wall, and send out an update to the thousands of people who have “liked” your page.

I originally set my sights on 20,000 fans or so because I saw that Darren over at Problogger had just over 20,000 and it seemed like a big number at the time. I’ve gone back and adjusted it to match my twitter goal of 58,000 just because I felt it was something I could achieve and like most I’m a big believer in more is better. (Even when it isn’t always the case)

Growing a fan page is similar to a twitter profile, you need to make it easy for people to not only find you, but also offer them a reason to “like” you. Here are a few of methods you can use to grow your own fan page.

-          First off, set a goal that you’d like to achieve as far as fans and growth are concerned. Goals can act as great motivators, and also help to keep our attentions focused on topics we’ve set as important to our businesses.

-          Customize your profile; use high quality graphics, and landing pages. Offer your fans something they can’t get on other pages so that they are more inclined to not only become fans, but also interact with you which will help to drive even more “likes” to your page from other potential fans.

-          Set a custom vanity URL as soon as you hit the 25 fan requirement, it makes you more easily findable, and lends itself to a more professional and branded image.Include a Facebook widget on your blog or website to make it easier for people to “like” your page. Include a request for them to join you there.

fan page

-          Link your blog and twitter account to your fan page so that it’s updated with all your tweets and blog posts which will result in more traffic being sent to other areas of your business that are also important in your growth.

-          Use Twiends to advertise your fan page on, it’s a great tool that can be used either free or paid depending on your circumstances and whether you have more time than money, or more money than time.

-          Facebook ads are a great way to get some tremendous growth to your page, and when done correctly can be managed for less than .50 cents a fan.

-          Google ads are also a great way for driving fan growth but while you can get traffic for around .12 – .20 cents if you know what you’re doing the percentage of people who click vs. the percentage of people who join is much lower than with Facebook ads.

-          Make it easy for people who are on your email list to connect with you on all your social networks.

-          Include your Facebook in your email signature file so that people receiving emails from you on a regular basis can easily find your fan page, and support you by “liking” it.

-          Ask your current Facebook friends. I’d suggest only using this once as it can get annoying to constantly be bombarded by page requests from people.

-          Use contests to build awareness around your fan page, and offer up prizes once in a while. It’s not only a great way to drive fan growth, but is also a great way to reward your existing fans also.

-          When commenting on other fan pages, do so as your page rather than as your personal account. If you’re not sure how, simply login to your fan page, and in the top right corner you’ll see the option to use Facebook as either yourself, or your page. Remember! Always post responsibly on other people’s walls, and don’t spam them with the sole intention of trying to attract their fans to your page.

Depending on how serious you are about growing a following on Facebook you can use as many methods as you’d like to promote your page. Obviously the more places you can be found online the better. If you haven’t already “liked” my fan page, please consider doing so now. Also if you’d like to promote your own fan page, website or offer then I have a special arrangement with my “Top commentators” allowing them to post freely on my wall. Simply be a regular commenter on my blog and as a way of saying thank you, you’re entitled to leave comments and links on my fan page witch currently has around 32,000 fans.

Success Series Goal – Followers

success series

Twitter seems to hold a certain fascination with internet marketers around the world, and not just twitter, but the number of followers they can get with Twitter. The more people that follow them, the more potential there if for people to notice and take action on their tweets, whether it be a blog post, an offer for something, a sponsored tweet they are getting paid for, or simply a retweet for one of their followers.

Growing my social network is just as important to me, as it is to you! That’s why I’ve listed in as one of the success series goals that I feel will help me achieve success with my blog, and my business. I’m sure this number could go on indefinitely (when you hit 1000 you want 2000, when you hit 2000 you want 5000) but for me I had to settle on a number to make it attainable for myself, rather than something vague that was always just out of reach.

My number is 58,000, many of you probably are wondering why that specific number and it’s just what I came up with for my business, and I felt it was enough to reflect a solid amount of success in the social following field. It surpasses John Chow, who happens to be one of the industry leaders and many others in our niche so I marked out intervals of 500, and each time I cross a milestone (today I made it to 36,000) I cross it off my list and move on to, in this case 36,500.

These smaller goals that lead up to the larger, overall goal make it much easier to focus on and to achieve. If I had looked at the whole number I’d simply have gotten discouraged and I’d probably never achieve it.

Here is a list of the different methods I’m using to grow my twitter fan base to its full potential.

-          I’ve swapped out my ad in the header spot to a simple “Follow Us on Twitter” banner.

-          I’ve added a “follow us on Twitter banner into my forum as well.

-          Added a twitter counter widget to show new visitors “hey 36,000 other people have followed me on Twitter, why don’t you follow me also?” The social proof is very powerful in situations like this.

-          You know all those wonderful little Ad Words coupons Google is always sending you? Use them to create a twitter campaign and drive some traffic to your twitter profile.

-          Twiends is a social connections website that provides introductions between users, and while there is no guarantee that they will continue to follow you after you’ve spent credits to attracting them, it can be a great way to grow your followers none the less.

-          Interact with other twitter user’s online, strike up conversations. People are much more likely to follow someone they have interacted with in the past, and are also much more likely to retweet those people’s tweets

-          Make a custom background for your twitter account that tells people more about you, and what sort of a person you are.

-          Use hash tags #SEO will be seen by a much larger audience than a simple SEO tweet to your followers.

Be creative there are a ton more ideas a person can implement in order to drive follower counts through the roof, and with a little creativity and persistence you’ll soon be tweeting to tens of thousands instead of thousands. (or hundreds of thousands?)

Please support my efforts by following me if you aren’t already! I promise to share tons of valuable information that I use on a daily basis myself. www.plrinternetmarketing.com/twitter

Success Series Goal – Subscribers

Subscribers

Part of a blogs success can be measured by the number of subscribers it has, and since most marketers tend to focus a lot on the numbers (and I’m no different) showing a subscriber count in the thousands is not only visually rewarding, but can also lend itself to a higher earning bracket for your website, and the traffic benefits can be astounding when you consider that people who subscribe are most certainly interested in the topic you cover.

In my first year the blog grew by about 1200 subscribers and since it really wasn’t something I was focusing on with any sort of intensity I’m happy with those results. This second year is another story all together though, and my expectations are much higher.

I tend to use leaders in the industry to compare myself to (which when you are first starting out isn’t probably the smartest thing to do) and since people like John Chow, or Problogger have anywhere from 100,000 to close to 200,000 subscribers after years of work and publishing great content I certainly have my work cut out for me.

I’d like to try and quadruple my subscribers in this my second year, and if I can end up with close to 5,000 by March I’ll consider myself successful in regards to this particular goal. I realize it will likely take several years of hard work to catch up to the likes of Darren or John, but I don’t intend to give up so I’ll get there!

Here are a few tips for growing your subscribers count on your own blog:

1.       Offer your visitors something of value in exchange for subscribing.

2.       Make sure you are publishing content your readers will find interesting.

3.       Write in your own style, or “voice”, don’t be afraid to be unique.

4.       Make it easy for them to subscribe, if they can’t see anywhere to do it, they likely won’t.

5.       Use a large and prominent RSS button.

6.       Write a post asking them to.

7.       Post frequently and consistently.

8.       Spend a minute to choose the best possible title for your post.

9.       Submit your feed to RSS directories.

10.   Increase your site’s traffic, if you double your traffic, you’ll likely double your subscriptions as well.

And that is my success series goal number 6. Stay tuned for all 31 issues of my success series goals, and at the end you’ll see the 32nd recent addition that I’ve since added to them. Perhaps you can offer up some suggestions on it, when I post it and you can help shape the future of this blog!

Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you all tomorrow where we have Edgar Boutaric guest posting some tips for us on How to outsource your blogging business.

Success Series Goal – Advertisers

Advertisers

Attracting advertisers to your blog is just one of the income streams that you’re able to develop in order to earn an income online. By taking the time to write high-quality posts and articles we then open ourselves up to higher traffic levels which advertisers tend to find attractive, especially when those visitors are niche specific or in an industry that is regularly in need of their services or products.

There are certain things that we can do to make it easier to attract advertisers to our site, and one of those is to ensure that we have an advertising page set up for them with statistics, locations, pricing and availability, and don’t forget to include a method for ordering.

Having a dedicated advertising page streamlines the entire process for you. It not only tells the potential advertiser that your blog does accept advertising offers, but it then goes into details about pricing traffic statistics, and contact information all at a glance.

You can choose to handle the advertising yourself using plug-ins like OIO-Publisher, or you can go with an ad agency who typically take anywhere from 25 to 50% for acting on your behalf. The good thing about going with agency is that they typically have access to a wider pool of potential advertisers who might be interested in listing on your site. I personally use buysellads.com, and have been for the past four weeks and enjoying the hands-off approach to dealing with advertisers.

Obviously, the more advertisers that you can attract to your website, the more income you can generate each month, so it’s important to try to not only try and attract new ones, but also to keep your existing advertisers happy, after all they too are in this for branding purposes as well as to make sales for their products or services.

For me advertising is one of the income streams I rely on each month, so it’s easy to see why it made it into my “Success Book” and its list of goals. The more advertisers, and the higher the quality of those advertisers will reflect directly on the income that I’m able to make.

Ideally I’d like to keep advertising revenues around 20% of the total income generated by the blog, so for a $3000.00 month I’d have to sell $600, and for a $30,000 month, I’d need to generate $6000.00 from advertising efforts.

It’s important to establish early on just what your priorities are for your site so that you can keep focused and on track. You wouldn’t believe how easy it is to get side tracked on something that isn’t productive, or in line with your goals.

Personally I ranked each area that was important to me, and to the growth of this blog, and assigned them a number with 1 being the most important. (There can only be one most important goal)

1.       Information – Now what this means is that the number one goal of this site is to provide people like yourself with information that relates to internet marketing, and building your own online business.

2.       Branding – Since the new kid on the block, I had to establish a presence with my site, my logo, my fan page, Twitter, etc. I’ve invested time and a ton of energy into building up a brand that thousands and thousands of people can recognize. Over time as I achieve my goals, these priorities will change position, and flex with my business and its development.

3.        Lead Generation – I’ve written a high quality e-book titled “E-Business; “The Insider’s Edge” and rather than selling it, I chose to give it away to my audience in exchange for their email address. I’ve then made it easy for them to opt in at multiple points of contact they might have with my site, and then can start sending them information (remember priority #1?) that is related to our industry, and when I include an affiliate link to a product I’m discussing they are more likely to purchase through it if it’s something they happen to be in the market for, or that they feel would be of benefit to them.

4.       Ad Revenue – Now in order to live; feed, and cloth myself I do still need to generate an income, and part of that income is going to come from advertisers, who promote their own sites, products, or services on mine in exchange for a monthly fee.

5.       Sales Revenue – Now this can come from selling my own products like Blog Traffic Tactics, or selling affiliate products that tie in with our industry. I use tools like Market Samurai, or Tweet Attacks on a daily basis in order to be as productive as possible, and many of my readers are in similar situations. An easy way to reward a blogger for providing great information day in and day out is to purchase something you are planning to purchase anyway, through their affiliate link. You get your product, they make a commission, and you’ve now contributed in part to their success.

Now just because Sales are listed last doesn’t mean that they aren’t important to me, on the contrary it absolutely is. Money means freedom, shelter, food, time to learn, time to invent, opportunities, charities, and so much more. It’s just that I set my goals up this way in order to build a solid foundation first with which to grow upon. I’m now starting my second year, and my priorities will start to change as I move into my “growth” year.

Launching your own business is the best feeling in the world! It’s a lot of hard work, and creative thinking, as well as never ending need to learn and know more about your chosen niche or topic, but the feeling you get from your accomplishments are also never ending.

If you are starting or considering starting your own e-business, make sure to grab a copy of my free e-book. It’s filled with some great information that I still use today!

Success Series Goal – Link Bait

link bait goal

The next goal that I have written down in my success book is link bait, I’d like to over time (say the next seven or eight months) have created fifty or sixty pieces of link bait that will bring in both organic links, as well as some nice, high quality traffic as well.

Now, creating link bait is considered to be a more advanced internet marketing technique, and doesn’t necessarily have to be a blog post or article. Link bait can be anything at all that people will be inclined to link to and hopefully return often to as well.

Some good components to a solid piece of link bait might include one or more of the following in order to attract links:

-          Humour

-          Resources

-          Incentives

-          News

-          Controversial

Now the first one humour can be something as simple as a cartoon, or image that turns viral and does the rounds online racking up views and links, or it can be a video that does the same. Perhaps you just happen to have one of those personalities where everything you say earns you a chuckle and since people like me just don’t have that personality we link to yours!

Resources are probably more common in our industry and you can either invest the time to research something that people will be interested in knowing, but aren’t willing to invest the time themselves, or you can outsource the research to someone else, your call.

Lists tend to do really well, titles such as “Highest paid bloggers of 2011” are sure to catch people’s attention, and result in some natural linking to the post. By investing a couple of days into researching and writing on a topic you can likely come up with something that will be delivering links and traffic for perhaps years to come!

Incentives also do well, offering a free resource or offer for people. A good example is a WordPress plugin that is free, but also provides a link back to your site. www.addthis.com is a great example, this is one of very few page rank 10 sites on the internet and the way they achieved it was through giving away a free social widget which when integrated into a site, provides them with a valuable link back to them.

News, or more accurately “Breaking” news is another way to generate some attention, if you focus on items that are likely to appeal to your audience, so much the better. I once wrote a simple 250 word post about Facebook being down one day, and had 400 visitors in a matter of hours from people who couldn’t login to their accounts and were wondering what was up. Now while that article was great for a short burst of traffic, it probably wasn’t something I’d consider link bait, but writing about these can usually result in a few sites linking to you.

Posting controversial material can be a great way to generate links if it isn’t overused. Too often you see sites that overdo this particular method, and it quickly gets old. If you use it occasionally and on points that you yourself happen to agree with but that are controversial at the moment, can lead to some good back and forth dialogue with members of the opposition. Even better if you refuse to publish the opposing comments, they’ll be forced to write about it on their own blogs (usually with a link back to your site).

By the way that sneaky comment tactic is courtesy of Shoemoney, devious little bugger eh? LOL

So for me, I’d like to end up with a solid 60 pieces of link bait that continue brining me links and traffic for some time to come! I realize it might take me a couple of years to produce that many pieces, but if it’s a goal, and it’s written down, then each time I publish one, I can scratch it off and be that much closer to my ultimate goal of success!

Success Series Goal – Comments

comments

The third goal in the success series is comments, comments are a crucial ingredient to the success of your blog, and without them you are missing out on an opportunity to get to know your visitors on a much more personal level. This is also the section that gives your readers a voice with which to join in and offer up their own insights into the topic being discussed.

When I first started blogging last year, I was soon introduced to comment spammers, and rather than deal with each spam comment individually I chose to turn comments off entirely eliminating the problem. I kept things this way, and for a while didn’t mind the lack of interaction because I had so much else to keep me busy.

By the time I realized I was missing out on an opportunity to connect with people other than my Twitter following, or Facebook friends I’d already trained my visitors not to comment, and have had a tough time trying to turn that around.

One day I’d like to have it where each of my blog posts are receiving 50 or 60 comments and I’m able to discuss topics in a more in depth manner that will lead to us all sharing even more knowledge and enabling us to learn from each other in a more interactive way.

Here are a few things you can try in order to increase the number of comments your blog is receiving.

1.       Make sure you have a subscribe to comments feature enabled so that the people who do take the time to ask a question or leave a comment can be notified by email when you or another visitor responds. (the response could be the answer to his question)

2.       Try and respond to everyone who takes the time to leave a comment, obviously there may come a time when you can’t respond to every one, but up until that point I’d sure try!

3.       Respond in a timely manner. Try not to let it go days on end before answering. If you’re really lucky you can get a back and forth conversation going, and before you know it you’ve racked up 20 or 30 comments in no time.

4.       Use a reward system for top commentators, or all commentators.  Some blogs have a do-follow link using your keyword anchor text as a reward for the top commentators, while others use plugins like Commentluv to reward each of their commenters. Whichever route you decide on keep in mind it never hurts to test each one out to see which results in the higher performance level, and increased comments.

5.       Offer to reciprocate with other bloggers, one for one. They leave a comment, you leave a comment. This can be a great way to help each other get some momentum going.

6.       Seed your own comments to get the ball rolling, some very high profile blogs not only did this in the beginning to get started, but still do it in order to create some controversy on their blog which ultimately leads to more traffic for them.

7.       Try running a contest for the month with the winner receiving a prize for his or her efforts. You can set minimum number to enter so you don’t end up rewarding the fellow with 6 comments over the entire month.

These are just a few methods to get us all going, and help us grow the lower section of our blogs, and this is the third goal on my personal success series goals which can be read about here. Obviously if you’d like to help out it’s no harder than leaving a comment, or just saying hello!

Success Series Goal – Guest Posting

Guest Blogging

As promised here is the first in a series of posts that I’ll write about the 31 “success ingredients” that I chose to set and accomplish for my blog, as I felt once I had achieved them all, I’d be exactly where I wish to be. Now that isn’t to say that I won’t add in an aspect here or there as they come along, but these 31 are the priorities when I sit down at my computer, and start working.

Now the first goal I chose (and these are in no particular order of importance) was guest posting. The reason I did is because I feel that in order to spread the word that your blog is online, and open for business you have to get in front of them. Now obviously the more people you can get in front of the more that will potentially click over and visit your website, and hopefully become loyal readers if the match between you happens to be a good one.

Guest posting not only opens you up to a new audience, but also has the nice added bonus of providing you with a couple of contextual backlinks from them to your site which as you know carries not only SEO weight, but also a few traveling web surfers from time to time. That traffic will start to add up over time, and as you start to become a regular contributor on some of the larger blogs, in fact eventually if you do it long enough, you’ll be one of those “larger” blogs!

Always remember to submit high quality pieces, and don’t be tempted to hold them back and use them on your own site. Your readers already know what a great writer you are now is your chance to expand into new territories.

Another thing I’ll point out is, make sure you check out the guest posting guidelines that the blog author has gone to the trouble of writing out, he did this so that he can help streamline the process between you and he/she and make things crystal clear on just what they expect. This also tells you in no uncertain terms that that particular blog does indeed accept guest posts, and you don’t waste time sending off your work and waiting a week or so to find out that aren’t in the market.

Guest posting seems to be the one thing you hear people (myself included) saying they wish they did more of, which tells me we all see the potential, but aren’t quite living up to our potential of fulfilling it to our maximum benefit.

I’ve chosen to list out 31 blogs in my niche that I’d love to guest post on, and I’ve left  another 31 spots open for blogs that come along in my day to day travels and that fit with my topic also. As I submit and have a post accepted I make a check beside the appropriate blog. It is my contention that when I have 100+ guest posts on my chosen blogs I’ll be seeing one aspect of my blogs success fulfilled.

Now that doesn’t mean I’ll never guest post again, because I certainly will, it just means that in my eyes, that one goal out of 31 will be accomplished, and I’ll be open to focus on the  30 remaining goals I’ve listed out as important to me, and my blogs success.

Who knows, perhaps when the first “Success Book” is finished, I’ll start a second!
