One of the secrets to getting to the other side of your blog or business goals is by applying a consistent application of pressure against whichever obstacles happen to be in your way. Now we each have different goals and ideas of what might be important to our own blog and its readers so we each most likely have different obstacles in front of us. There will likely be many that are common between us though such as driving more traffic, increasing conversions, building a fan base, getting more comments, just to name a few.
Now there are two approaches I take with my blog in order to accomplish the goals I’ve written out for the current month I’m in. At the moment if I look at my board I have thirty-five goals listed that I need to achieve before I can go ahead and add in some new ones. Often I’ll simply increase the number of a previous goal so If I said last month try to hit 20,000 fans with my fan page, then this month might be to hit 22,000 or something similar.
The first approach is the balanced approach, where I list out a set of daily tasks that cover all the different goals I have listed. By doing a small piece of each every single day I’m able to make slow but consistent progress toward my goals, and as long as I don’t get side tracked, or slack off, or lose focus I should have accomplished most of them by the end of the month. (Assuming the thirty-five goals were accurate and realistic for me of course)
Occasionally in life we lose focus, or get bored and struggle with the task at hand, and before you know it an entire week has slipped by you and you’ve managed to accomplish absolutely nothing that you’ve listed out as important to you. Don’t worry it happens to all of us. You might feel so discouraged knowing that even if you start back up, you’ll be a week (or more) behind and won’t be able to accomplish your goals in the timeframe you were aiming at.
For me when this happens I switch gears entirely, and toss my daily tasks in the garbage (I still do my minimum of course, like blog posts, etc.) and pick just one of the goals on the board and focus my entire attention on accomplishing it. This focused attention soon makes short work of the goal, and I’m able to scratch it off my list and move onto the next one. There are days I’m able to knock off three or four goals, and at the end of the day I feel like I actually accomplished something of value for my blogging business.
It’s by using these two approaches that I’m able to accomplish so much in so little time. So if you’re sitting there unable to make any progress, or aren’t seeing the progress you’d like to be seeing then try listing out your goals and using one of the two methods.
Balanced – List out all the tasks you’d need to do daily in order to accomplish your goals by the end of the month.
Focused – Blitz just one single goal on your board until you’ve knocked it off. Turn off all distractions, and set your mind to the task. It’s amazing what a person can accomplish in a few hours working on a single problem!
