Blog Monetization – When Should I Start

Blog Monetization – When Should I Start

When it comes to monetization there are a lot of things that you should know. Being that most people use Google Adsense to start making money online, it is a good idea to know when the best time to place Ads on your blog would be.

If you are creating a niche site, then I would place Adsense ads on the site right when the site goes live. For personal blogs, such as this one you should do things differently. With a personal blog you have to worry about your readers and their preference before you even think about making money with your blog.

So when is the best time to monetize a blog?

When you have 50 blog posts

If you have more than 50 blog posts live on your blog, then it is about time that you put some ads on it. The reason why you should wait until you have more than 50 blog posts is because you don’t want your blog to look empty when you add advertisements to it. A lot of people do this and readers don’t like this.

4 months after going live

Another time to place ads on your blog is after four months of going live. The reason why I highly recommend waiting at least 4 months is because by then you should have at least a small following and you should have enough blog posts to fill up your site. Some bloggers out there will recommend only waiting 3 months but I have found that after 3 months you are still not where you want to be with traffic and if the traffic isn’t there then there is no point to place ads on the site just yet.

100 unique visitors per day

When you get 100 unique visitors to your blog every day then that is a great time to place ads on your site. The reason I say this is because 100 unique visitors will mean that you should make some money from Google Adsense every day. Not only that but 100 unique visitors is where most blogs will stay for the remainder of their existence so if you don’t place ads on your site now, then you may not ever do it.

100 email subscribers

Do you have 100 email subscribers yet? If you have more than 100 email subscribers, then it is time to monetize your blog. With 100 email subscribers you should be able to send out an email and get at least 20 of those subscribers to come to your blog. This is a benchmark that I use because email subscribers are much more reliable than general traffic you get from the search engines or social media.

1000 cumulative fans/followers on Facebook and Twitter

The last thing that I would recommend is to go by your fans/followers on Facebook and Twitter. The reason I recommend going off of these is because getting a decent following on both of these sites could mean residual traffic month after month. With social media being the new hotspot for traffic you can’t ignore what you have. If your new blog doesn’t meet any of the requirements above but you do have more than 1000 cumulative fans/followers on Facebook and Twitter, then it is a good time to monetize your blog. Just remember, these have to be actual blog readers, not just a bunch of your friends.

When it comes to monetization you need think about the following you have as opposed to the money you could be making. The problem that most new blogs have is they try way too hard to earn money online. If you want to have a successful blog, then you will need to prove to your readers that you care about them more than you do your own wellbeing.

Get Your Blog To Stand Out

Get Your Blog To Stand Out

If you don’t get a lot of traffic to your blog, then it is time that you do something about it. Traffic is a big part of any blog but you can’t get traffic unless you put your blog out there. Giving people the option to view your blog or not is what you want to do but the key is to make your blog stand out.

So, how do you make your blog stand out?

There are several things that you can do to make your blog stand out. One of the things many people have done for years is search engine optimization (SEO). Although organic traffic is the best, it takes the longest to get.

Being that so many people struggle with standing out from the crowd and getting the traffic that they deserve, I have decided to give you a little secret that I use. There is actually 4 parts to make this happen. I am not going to go into detail about using SEO to get traffic and make your blog stand out because that is a given. What I am going to talk about is other ways to get traffic and set yourself apart from everybody else in your niche.

Get Your Blog To Stand Out

Twitter

If you are not following us on Twitter, then I highly recommend you do that now to see how we set ourselves apart from everybody else in the niche. Twitter is a great way to get your blog to stand out and the reason is because you can network with other people. Networking has been around for a long time but with Twitter it makes everything that much easier. All I am saying is that you need to use your Twitter account to take your blog to the next level.

Twitter is a great source for traffic but even without the traffic you can still establish yourself and your blog as an authority in your niche. No matter what you talk about on your blog, there will be people on Twitter that will follow you. Just put yourself out there like I have done and see for yourself.

Facebook

Just like Twitter, using Facebook is a great way to make your blog stand out. Again, if you are not following us on Facebook then I recommend you do that too. There is a lot of great information that you will find from some of our followers on Facebook and that is why I recommend it.

The best part about Facebook is that almost everybody in the world has an account. If you want to make yourself know as an expert in your niche, then using Facebook is a must. I am not saying you need to spend hours on Facebook each day but you do need to interact with your following and give them things they won’t find anywhere else. Trust me on this one, if you can stand out on Facebook then making your blog stand out will be no problem.

RSS Feeds & Email

Did you know that some people will check their email 10+ times per day? I know you may be wondering why this is relevant but just give me a second. The reason this statistic is relevant to you is because you can send your blogs RSS feed directly to their inbox. Not only that but you can also send your readers emails. RSS feeds and emails are a great way to set yourself apart from everybody else but most people don’t use them correctly.

In order to get your blog to stand out you need to increase your RSS subscribers as well as your email subscribers while at the same time giving people want they want to hear. Where most bloggers go wrong is they send out affiliate link after affiliate link without any good solid tips or advice on their subject matter. What I recommend is that for every affiliate link you send out that you write at least 3 good emails/blog posts. This is the number I would stick to if I were you and it will help you grow your blog into an authority in your niche.

Guest Posts

Guest posting is always a tough thing to do and the main reason is because most people don’t know what to write about. As a blogger you need to know your niche like the back of your hand. Not only do you need to know your niche, you need to know who you are targeting and why.

Depending on your niche, it might be tough to find a blog where you can write a guest post and that is why you need to use all of these methods to get your blog to stand out. What you need to remember is that you are the face of the blog and because of that you need to stand out in order for the blog to stand out. This is part of the reason why I highly recommend writing and submitting 1 guest post every week. I know that this number is not huge but it will get you started on the right track.

Now, if you have any questions about any of these things then just comment below and I will help you as much as I can. Just know that nobody is going to help you stand out from the crowd, you have to do all of that on your own.

How To Use Facebook To Make Affiliate Sales

How To Use Facebook To Make Affiliate Sales

By now, I am sure you have a Facebook page, right? The reason I say this is because most people in the world have a Facebook page of some kind. Whether you have a fan page, a personal page, a website page or whatever it may be doesn’t matter and the reason is because you can still make affiliate sales from that page.

One of the things that most people don’t realize is that there are over 800 million people on Facebook, over 500 million people on Facebook each day and all of them are potential sales. If you want to make it in affiliate marketing, then you need to utilize Facebook for what it is worth. Trust me on this one, making money on Facebook is really easy once you know what you are doing.

Facebook Marketing Tips

Get Interested Fans

One of the first things that you need to do, other than start a Facebook page of some kind is to get interested fans. The reason why you need to get fans that are interested in what you are talking about is because selling an affiliate product to somebody that is not interested in buying it is not going to go over so well. Think about it, doesn’t that make sense to you?

If you look around online you will see a lot of people being marketed to even though they have no interest in the product. If you want to make the most money from Facebook, then it is imperative that you get fans that will be interested in what you are talking about and what you are offering.

Update Daily

Another tip that you need to follow is to simply update your status on a daily basis. The reason you need to do this is to make sure that people know you are still there. The reason I advise you on updating your status daily is because the more updates you do, the more affiliate links you can put in. Just remember, if you don’t do any updates, then your followers will find it odd when you finally do add something.

Limit Affiliate Links

Something else that you really need to keep to a minimum is the amount of affiliate links you post. What many people do is post an affiliate link every time they make a status update and that is not what you want to do. What I highly recommend doing is posting no more than 3 affiliate links per week. If you can do this, then I am sure you will get some sales without making it look like that is the only reason you post status updates.

Giveaways

One other tip is to simply give something for free. This doesn’t mean that you need to send people new Ipods of things like that but you do need to give people something so they think they are getting a great deal from you. Some of the best things to give for free are ebooks, links to great deals online and even other giveaways that you spot online.

Now, I know what you are wondering, “How do I get people to like my page”. This is not as tough as many people think it is and the reason is because there are so many ways that you can get people to like your page. Below I created a list of three great ways to grow your following on Facebook and I hope you use them.

How To Grow Your Following

Comment On Related Pages

One of the best things you can do it create links to your page within Facebook. The best way to go about doing this is by commenting on other Facebook pages. The nice thing about doing this is that the fans of that particular Facebook page will see what you wrote and they might head over to your page and become a fan. This is one of the fastest ways to get more followers but you need to put in the time and effort into writing comments on other pages.

Build Backlinks To Your Page

Just like with a webpage, you need backlinks. The best part about a backlink is not that your page will go higher and higher on the search engines, the best part is that you will have a new door to get to your Facebook page. Now, I know that backlinks are not that fun to build but if you have a website or you like to read other blogs around the internet, then that would be a great time to leave a link back to your Facebook page.

Create Youtube Videos To Your Page

Something that most people don’t do, which you should, is simply create Youtube videos to your Facebook page. The reason why I highly recommend this is because that Youtube video could become viral and if it does, then you will get a lot of fans in a very short amount of time. On tip that I have for you is to also place the video that you make on your Facebook page and the reason is because the video could attract more fans to your page. Just know that the more stuff you have on your Facebook page, the more people you will be able to get. One last thing about Youtube is that people would rather watch a video than read a post so if you want to you can just update your Facebook page with videos and that will make you extremely different than what is already out there.

If you are serious about making money from affiliate sales, then it is a must to get a following on Facebook. Most people think that you need thousands of fans to make any money but that is not the truth. You don’t need a lot of fans, but you will need fans that are interested in what you are talking about. Trust me, if you follow what you have learned here, you will be making affiliate sales in no time at all.

Internet Marketing for Dummies

When it comes to internet marketing there are a few well known facts that many of us seem to ignore, or overlook often to our own detriment. By implementing the basics early on and creating a solid marketing foundation, you’re chances of success increase dramatically.

A Plan:

First thing you’re going to need, even before a domain and website is a plan! You need a complete plan that includes every single aspect you can think of concerning the structure, launch, and growth of your business. Knowing where you’re heading will make it a thousand times easier to get yourself there.

Goals:

Every successful marketer, and in fact every successful entrepreneur will tell you how important goal setting, monitoring, and achievement are to the continued growth of any business or endeavor. Goals can generally be broken down into short, medium, and long term goals, but since these are YOUR goals, they can look and feel any way you choose.

I myself choose to have daily, monthly, annual, and then long term goals. This way I can see at a glance if I’m on track to achieve them, or need to invest more time or resources, or perhaps come up with a new solution all together. Remember, these documents are yours, and can be fluid and flexible in nature. The true power within them is creating and acting upon them.

A Revenue Model

Now while this might sound simple (we did call it internet marketing for dummies) enough for some reason it gets overlooked by more people than you might think. If you are looking to earn a living from the internet, you have to have some sort of product or service to sell. These products don’t even have to be your own, and including affiliate income is perhaps one of the easiest ways to get started making money online.

Traffic

We all need traffic to our websites and offers, and getting it usually amounts to good old fashioned hard work, mixed in with some high quality content. There are very few “tricks” involved here, but the effort will need to be put forth if you’re going to be profitable.

Generally speaking your traffic will come from four main sources, and you can focus your efforts on those in order to realize the best return on your investment which will usually be time.

-          Search Engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, and others)

-          Social Media (Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Etc.)

-          Social Bookmarking Sites (Stumbleupon, Digg, Delicious, and others)

-          Branding Efforts (direct, guest posting, blog commenting, forum participation, etc.)

I could go into more detail on each of these, but honesty each one could and has been the topic for an entire eBook. I’d suggest investing the time in educating yourself fully on each aspect above in order to capitalize on the vast amount of visitors that are actively seeking a product or website, just like yours!

Now while the title might be “Internet Marketing for Dummies”, truth be told, Internet marketing is for just about anyone looking to earn either a little, or a lot of money online. If you go into it with the mentality that this is a business like any other and requires more than just a website, and some luck, chances are you’ll start enjoying those payments that come in while you’re awake, asleep, or even on holidays!

Good luck to all of you!

Set Up a Facebook Fan Page for Your Customers and Prospects to Gather

fan page
A Facebook fan page is like having a Facebook profile dedicated to your business. While you could make a profile for your business, Facebook will likely flag it and remove the profile, leaving your customers and prospects without a way to connect with your brand on Facebook.

Instead of a profile, you want a fan page for your business. Fan pages are a way for your customers and prospects to identify with you and associate who you are with your brand as well as share the page with others.

Take a moment and define the purpose of your fan page. If you define the purpose of your page as only to sell more, then you need to take a step back. While social media does help businesses promote their brands and sell more products, consumers can always tell when that’s the only reason a brand is online.

Like all forms of social media, your potential ‘fans’ are looking at your page and asking themselves one question, “What’s in it for me?” What you have to figure out is how to best give something back to your Facebook fans. Some fan pages provide coupons, resources or helpful tips. Knowing what you’ll provide your clients in advance will help guide you as you create the page.

Once you’ve determined the purpose of your fan page, it’s time to build it. You can start building your fan page by signing in to your Facebook account. You want to sign in with the one that will be associated with your fan page. After you’ve signed in, visit: http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php.

Choose your brand name carefully to appeal to your target audience. For instance the company Victoria’s Secret didn’t create a fan page for their brand. They created one for their new line Victoria’s Secret PINK. By doing this, they targeted the audience most likely to purchase their products (college age females).

Now that you’ve chosen your page name and category, make sure you upload a high resolution photo of your logo or one of your most popular products. The goal here is to choose an image that will instantly spark brand recognition in a consumer’s mind.

Next, add some text to the information tab. Hint: you can use text from your about page or any other page on your website. You can even include testimonials for your business. You can import your company blog to the notes section using RSS feeds.

This means new blog posts are automatically posted on your page’s wall. If you want to create a custom landing page, then try Static FBML. Use the search bar to find it and on the left hand side, click ‘Add to My Page.’

This will add an application to your page that allows you to post raw HTML code and have it display correctly to your fans. After your page is set up, make sure you update it two to four times a week so your fan base will continue to grow.

Is Twiends Dead?

twiends

With a slow launch back in December of 2009, Twiends started to see an explosive growth in both traffic and users in March of 2010. The explosion of traffic had people of all social networks flocking to join in order to expand their social reach, as well as their social networks.

Marketers and individuals alike could choose to offer credits in the form of seeds (I’m assuming one of the larger social sites took offence at the word credits) in exchange for other users to do any one of the following:

  1. Follow them on Twitter
  2. “Like” their fan page on Facebook
  3. Watch their video on YouTube
  4. Visit their website for a predetermined time

Users were able to build up their credits by also participating in the above activities or buy purchasing them directly from the website for upwards of $599.95 for 50,000 seeds. With 50,000 seeds you could reasonably expect to grow your twitter followers (or fans, hits, views) by about five to ten thousand.

  • 50,000 seeds paying out 5 seeds and accounting for the 30% drop rate most users are experiencing would result in 7,000 followers on Twitter, “likes” on Facebook, hits on your site, or views on your video.

2011 wasn’t a great year for Twiends, it seems it signaled the beginning of the end, and while they are still struggling to find something for all those users to do, it simply doesn’t appear to be the reality.

2011 saw Google step in and shut them down as far as the website tab was concerned. Google penalized them for facilitating what in its eyes was nothing more than a service that could potentially get millions of AdSense accounts banned for using their traffic. (Goes against Google’s Terms of Service)

June 17th saw the removal of the Facebook features after Facebook banned them from continuing to use the API needed for them to continue. I think it was at this point that many users started to realize that the Twiends experience was coming to a close. There was a noticeable drop in traffic following this event.

Less than a month later, on July 11th users who logged in quickly noticed that there was another missing tab in the navigational panel. After 24 hours where users were unable to post in the support forum regarding the issue, Twiends issued this statement:

“Hi all, we unfortunately had to remove seeds from the YouTube feature. We’ll have an update on the issue next week. Thanks for your understanding. Dave”

While it’s unclear why they lost this latest tab and feature (Google does own YouTube) this will likely be the final straw for users, and unless they are able to quickly find another viral method  for growing something that doesn’t include Facebook, YouTube, or Google they will most likely fizzle out into a shadow of their former selves.

Surprisingly Twitter who is always quick to ban developers from using their API in a way that they deem against the “user experience” has left Twiends alone to their own devices. I suppose now that they are the only feature left, Twitter may start to pay a little more attention to them, and if they take their cue from Google and Facebook, we could see the end of them all together!

The Wonderful World of Web 2.0

Web 2.0

Web 2.0 is a term that’s often misused.  Some people use the term to refer to a particular style of graphics design, but that’s not what web 2.0 is really about.  Web 2.0 is all about user-generated content.

This means the visitors to your site generate the majority of the content on the site, as opposed to the site owner or writers creating the content.  A perfect example of web 2.0 is Squidoo.  Squidoo is a social network, which is a type of web 2.0 site.

Although the site does post some of its own content, such as the lensmaster tip blog, the vast majority of the site was built by individuals creating their own pages within the site.  When a user signs up to the site, they’re allowed to position themselves as experts on anything from A-Z (they even have a separate section for R and X rated pages that are kept from the general G-rated public).

They create a unique page on the Squidoo domain, with all sorts of information about their niche topic.  They can create or join groups and post in the SquidU forum to communicate with others in the community.

One of the oldest types of web 2.0 sites is the forum.  Forums are almost as old as the Internet itself, and they were one of the first types of web 2.0 concepts.  Other very old web 2.0 predecessors were guestbooks, free-for-all link sites, and classified ad sites.

These days, web 2.0 sites are more complex.  Rather than simply posting messages on a forum, users can typically generate their own profiles, create their own custom pages, and have more involvement in creating the site and its content.

There are many different types of web 2.0 sites.  MySpace and Facebook are two well-known social networking sites.  Blogger is a very popular blog platform, which allows people to develop a type of online diary or journal.

Twitter is somewhat like a blog, only users post very small snippets of content in each post.  Social bookmarking sites like StumbleUpon and Digg allow users to post their favorite links, and allow other people to vote on those links.

Squidoo and HubPages are two sites that let people create pages of information about specific subjects, a bit like a one-page website about a particular topic, similar to Wikipedia.  The basic function of web 2.0 sites is to allow users to post their own content to the site.

Web 2.0 sites can be leveraged for marketing purposes if used correctly.  The key is to immerse yourself in the community and become known as a real person rather than a nameless marketer hoping to cash in on their pooled traffic generation.

Success Series Goal – Fans

fans

Just like the followers on Twitter another aspect to my social media marketing campaign is to have a large fan base on Facebook. To date Twitter has been my stronger performer and is also my third largest source of traffic to my blog.

Having a large fan page can mean not only more traffic, but more revenue as well when a product is added into the mix. Just like an email list where you can send out a special promotion or offer for your latest product, so too can you post on your fan page wall, and send out an update to the thousands of people who have “liked” your page.

I originally set my sights on 20,000 fans or so because I saw that Darren over at Problogger had just over 20,000 and it seemed like a big number at the time. I’ve gone back and adjusted it to match my twitter goal of 58,000 just because I felt it was something I could achieve and like most I’m a big believer in more is better. (Even when it isn’t always the case)

Growing a fan page is similar to a twitter profile, you need to make it easy for people to not only find you, but also offer them a reason to “like” you. Here are a few of methods you can use to grow your own fan page.

-          First off, set a goal that you’d like to achieve as far as fans and growth are concerned. Goals can act as great motivators, and also help to keep our attentions focused on topics we’ve set as important to our businesses.

-          Customize your profile; use high quality graphics, and landing pages. Offer your fans something they can’t get on other pages so that they are more inclined to not only become fans, but also interact with you which will help to drive even more “likes” to your page from other potential fans.

-          Set a custom vanity URL as soon as you hit the 25 fan requirement, it makes you more easily findable, and lends itself to a more professional and branded image.Include a Facebook widget on your blog or website to make it easier for people to “like” your page. Include a request for them to join you there.

fan page

-          Link your blog and twitter account to your fan page so that it’s updated with all your tweets and blog posts which will result in more traffic being sent to other areas of your business that are also important in your growth.

-          Use Twiends to advertise your fan page on, it’s a great tool that can be used either free or paid depending on your circumstances and whether you have more time than money, or more money than time.

-          Facebook ads are a great way to get some tremendous growth to your page, and when done correctly can be managed for less than .50 cents a fan.

-          Google ads are also a great way for driving fan growth but while you can get traffic for around .12 – .20 cents if you know what you’re doing the percentage of people who click vs. the percentage of people who join is much lower than with Facebook ads.

-          Make it easy for people who are on your email list to connect with you on all your social networks.

-          Include your Facebook in your email signature file so that people receiving emails from you on a regular basis can easily find your fan page, and support you by “liking” it.

-          Ask your current Facebook friends. I’d suggest only using this once as it can get annoying to constantly be bombarded by page requests from people.

-          Use contests to build awareness around your fan page, and offer up prizes once in a while. It’s not only a great way to drive fan growth, but is also a great way to reward your existing fans also.

-          When commenting on other fan pages, do so as your page rather than as your personal account. If you’re not sure how, simply login to your fan page, and in the top right corner you’ll see the option to use Facebook as either yourself, or your page. Remember! Always post responsibly on other people’s walls, and don’t spam them with the sole intention of trying to attract their fans to your page.

Depending on how serious you are about growing a following on Facebook you can use as many methods as you’d like to promote your page. Obviously the more places you can be found online the better. If you haven’t already “liked” my fan page, please consider doing so now. Also if you’d like to promote your own fan page, website or offer then I have a special arrangement with my “Top commentators” allowing them to post freely on my wall. Simply be a regular commenter on my blog and as a way of saying thank you, you’re entitled to leave comments and links on my fan page witch currently has around 32,000 fans.

Twiends for Twitter

Stronger together

I wrote a few weeks ago about using Twiends to grow your social network, and allow you choose between either growing your Fan page, YouTube channel, or Twitter followers. Quite of you took advantage of it right away and started to grow your networks, but I had a few people say they didn’t think that it would work.

They were of the opinion that since I already had 20,000 followers on Twitter that I was using that number to influence my review of Twiends. Fair enough, here are my growth stats for the last month.

On March 28th I had exactly 20,848 people following me on Twitter and if you check my stats I’ve had around 20,000 for some time now. Fast forward a month to today and you’ll see I now have 29,330 followers and a prediction for 38,695 in the course of another 30 days if I continue with this rate of growth.

Now personally I’d of been happy with 1000 or so new followers in a month’s time, but I’m not going to say no to this kind of growth. Having a large audience is usually a benefit in my industry.

twitter statistics

It’s important to note that I’ve also never paid more than 2 credits for a follower, so my growth while consistent is still likely lower than what other could expect. I have two monitors so I usually have the second one open to their site, and I’ll watch the YouTube video’s and build up credits that way.

You can also choose the fast route of purchasing credits to use; it all depends on whether you have more time than money, or more money than time. Me, I have lots of time and it’s easy to build credits while I’m working on my primary monitor.

If having a large social network is something that is important to you or your business, I’d definitely recommend signing up for free account, and taking advantage of the millions of other users networking on there.

One word of caution though, if you follow back everyone who follows you I’d suspend that while you are using the service. Unfortunately with anything like this system there will always be spammers, and fake accounts and I’ve noticed more than my fair share. Since I’m paying for the follow I don’t really feel obligated to follow back anyway unless they are someone I’d normally follow and interact with.

Facebook 65 million dollar settlement update

Winklevoss Twins

It looks like the dubious notoriety of the twins made popular by the recent movie “The Social Network” will be coming to an end for once and for all. On Monday a panel of three Ninth Circuit court judges ruled that the twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss would have to accept the settlement offer (which they’d already agreed to) of 65 million dollars which resulted from their claims that they had the idea for a popular social network similar to Facebook first.

They are now arguing that the evaluation that was presented to them was significantly lower than the actual value of the Social Networking giant we all know as Facebook. Despite the fact that the decision was unanimous the brothers and their team of lawyers will seek a rehearing before a larger group of judges, or failing that the final option for them would the Supreme Court.

I think when two Harvard graduates, a team of high calibre lawyers and a wealthy father who owns a consulting firm which has duties that often include the valuation of high profile companies, and corporations accepts a legally proposed settlement to the tune of 65 million dollars… they shouldn’t get to come back and say “I changed my mind”!

Facebook is now worth over 50 billion dollars, and climbing steadily higher. It has an estimated half billion registered users worldwide and is the second most trafficked website on the web. (Google is first)

“At some point, litigation must come to an end,” Kozinski wrote. “That point has now been reached.”

There comes a time when you need to accept things as they are take your 65 million dollars in cash and stock options and come up with something of your own. The value wasn’t so much in the idea, as in the application of effort that went into the idea that made it valuable.
