Breaking the Copywriting Code to Improve Sales

copywriting

There are a handful of simple changes you can make to improve your sales – and one of those changes is the way you present your written content. Believe it or not, there is a formula that copywriters use to convince people to buy products and you can use that same formula on your own website.

The first step you want to do with any sales copy is make sure that you present the problem. Without a problem, people have no need to buy or take any kind of action at all. Presenting people with a problems is the same as letting them know they need to (and can with your help) take the necessary action to resolve whatever the problem is.

So first, you tell them what’s wrong – but you do it from the, “Hey – I’ve been there too” point of view. Never talk down to potential customers (you’re in debt? While I would never let myself get into debt, here’s how you can get out of it).

You have to show them that you understand, that you’ve walked the same road and can feel their pain. Establishing a common bond builds trust. Next, you want to show them how they can have a solution for their problem and you present that solution.

One of the biggest mistakes most people make when presenting sales copy or any other type of content is they fail to break it down into bite sized chunks. When words are written together in long paragraph form without breaks, readers tend to skim rather than read the content if they read it at all.

To get your point across, write your copy in a style that flows easily. Start with clean, crisp headlines followed by your storyline and then begin to break it up into sub-headlines.

Use bullet points in your copy. Bullet points serve an important purpose – they take long paragraphs and put them in an easier to read format. They immediately draw the focus of the reader and you can point out important details within bullet points.

You also want to write your call to action in a way that moves people to act. Sometimes using the same old phrases (Buy now! or Order here!) can backfire. People tend to turn a blind eye to words they’ve seen a thousand times.

Remember the customer’s problem? Here’s where understanding what the problem is can work as a call to action. For example, if you were selling products that successfully treated acne, instead of having a Buy Now call to action, you could use, “Yes! I want to fight my acne starting today!”

You want to think about your call to action and put yourself into the customer’s shoes. How is the problem hurting their life? What emotions are they battling because of it? Embarrassment? Social anxiety?

Don’t forget to use a PS and PPS in your copy. Why? Some people skip the sales copy and head straight to the price point and postscripts to see what the page is summed up about. You can also use these to show what the customer might risk if he doesn’t take advantage of your offer.

Your online education and skillsets

e-learning

Deciding to pursue an internet marketing lifestyle is a choice that comes easier for some than others, but regardless of the aptitude you have for your chosen career direction it’s important that you keep up with not only the changing technologies and algorithms, but also the emerging ones as well.

It’s important to devote a portion of your online time to furthering your internet marketing education, and since that can encompass so many different facets of the world wide web, it might be a good idea to list out the different ways you intend to work your online business, and which ways you intend to earn your living from it.

Each of us has our own skills and strengths that we’ve brought in from our previous careers or job experiences and there is no sense in letting those skills go to waste. Take the one’s that can be adapted into your new business plan and develop them further, and figure out which skills are going to suit your new business needs to fullest advantage and start developing them.

The best place to learn is from those who are already there, in the trenches so to speak. The longer someone has been earning a living online, the more tricks he’s likely to have picked up along the way. Once you’ve decided which skills you’d like to develop find a marketer who possesses them, and see if he’s put out a book, or video course.

Each person has his or her own strengths and weaknesses when it comes to doing business online, and the best part about it all is that you get to pick and choose what you’d like to learn from each. If marketer A is and expert copywriter and that is something you feel you’d like to add into your business skillset mix, then read everything you can off of their blog, download and read their e-book, and if you’re lucky and they’ve spent the time putting together a comprehensive video training course you just might want to pick up a copy to study over.

Internet Marketing is one industry where you might want to aim at being a “jack of all trades” so to speak. I’ve seen amazing writers that have only a handful of people reading their amazing content simply because they hadn’t bothered to develop their SEO and marketing skills to an adequate level.

On the flip side there are SEO experts who get a million visits but because they don’t invest the time in creating content that will keep those visitors on their site they end up with no sales, and high bounce rates simply because they didn’t develop a consistent content creation strategy.

There is more (much, much more) to internet marketing than simply slapping a website up on your hosting account and hoping people will not only find you, but once found, stick around to learn about you, and return enough times to learn to trust you enough to hopefully make a purchase.

Take a look at the following list of skills and decide which you already have, and which you’d like to either learn or develop further and then go from there to find a suitable source to learn from.

-          Computer Software Skills

This list is by no means exhaustive, but it gives you an idea of the depth and breadth of the skills that are not only going to come in handy, but become a part of your daily routine. Depending on the exact niche you’ve decided on and the tools or team you have at your disposal you may have less, or even more skills you need to master and learn.

Remember even if you outsource a portion of your business you are going to want to have an understanding of what’s involved so that you can make sure you are getting the best return on your outsource dollars. It can mean the difference between paying $100.00 dollars for a service, and paying $5.00 dollars.

Members Area Integration

members area

Someone recently asked me what my business model was, and I told him, “I’d like to be a successful well known internet marketer who makes a good living while helping others do the same thing.” Now a big part of how I help people is by providing articles that keep them informed, and motivated, as well as up to date on the different methods of internet marketing that I’m using or reading about.

Since this is what I do full time, I have a fair bit of knowledge to share, and since I’m researching these different topics I might as well take the extra time to type it up and pass it along. You never know what piece of information might contribute to someone else’s success!

I knew in the beginning that I’d like an area where internet marketers, social media enthusiasts, affiliate marketers, and all the other likeminded individuals I run into on a daily basis could go, and share ideas, or just do some research. There are online forums, but they can be a bit overwhelming at times, and if you don’t know your way around they can seem a bit “cliquey” and hard for newbies and experts alike to share some “virtual space” and hopefully some great ideas.

I’m currently in the process of building a members section, where you can register, upload your favourite profile picture, tell us as little or as much about yourself as you feel comfortable with and interact with entrepreneurs just like yourself. Building a business is never done alone.

Some of the topics covered will be:

-          Internet marketing

-          Affiliate Marketing

-          Copywriting

-          Article Marketing

-          CPA (Cost per Action)

-          CPS (Cost per Sale)

-          SEO

-          Link Building

-          Web Design

-          Programming

-          Site Reviews

-          Graphic Design

-          Product Creation

-          Joint Ventures

-          List Building

-          Email Marketing

-          Tutorials

-          Member Downloads

-          Buy Sell Trade Section

-          Hire a Freelancer Section

-          Lounge

To access the member’s area, simply click the “members” tab in the navigation bar at the top of our page, to return to the website click the “website” tab and you’ll be brought back. Eventually the navigation system will be fully integrated (as soon as we can get WordPress and Vbulletin to play nicely together).  We will be adding and tweaking the features over the coming months, and adding content to the various forums.

The construction process will likely last a week or two barring no unforeseen coding disasters, so I’d ask that you please bear with me while I make the changes. I will try and make them as seamless as possible, and will be doing most of the work between midnight and six so as to not interrupt everyone. Please let me know if there is a feature you’d like to see added, or if there is something broken you don’t think I’ve noticed yet so I can get it fixed up right away.

Internet Marketing Skillsets

internet marketing skillsets

Internet Marketers need to very versatile and have a wide range of skills in order to be successful.
Unless you’re willing to outsource all your work which is possible, but also can get very expensive after a while, and let’s face it, you just don’t have the degree of control over your online empire unless you’ve tackled and mastered many of the challenges that we face in internet marketing.

One of the skills you will need is perseverance, without exception you will all fail! Wait, I’ll say it again! Without exception, you will all fail, many times in fact. The thing to do is to fail fast, learn from each failure, and move on. Don’t worry; this fact is part of what makes internet marketing so lucrative. For many when they face failure, then stop, or move on to the next “easy money” leaving those remaining with one less competitor. If it were easy, everyone would be doing it, and there wouldn’t as much opportunity as there is. Failure is part of life, and shouldn’t be seen as a huge negative obstacle to run from. Thomas Edison when inventing the light bulb said “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

Adaptability is another important trait to have in this field, as due to the nature of Search Engine technology, we are forced to learn new methods of SEO, on quite a regular basis. Something that drove hundreds of visitors resulting in thousands of dollars in sales last year, might actually hurt you this year, you need to roll with it, learn and move on. Remember, internet marketing is very technology based and as such will require you to continually learn new methods, and technologies in order to stay at the top of your game. A good example is mobile technology which is fast rising, almost everyone you see has a Blackberry, IPhone, or other mobile device on their person for much of their day, I’ve been slow to adapt my website to this technology, but while reviewing my visitor logs, realized that a full 16% of my traffic is coming in via a mobile device.

Graphic design is an import skill to have a grasp of even if you won’t be responsible for designing your site, or graphics. There will be many times when you will need to manipulate images and graphics and you won’t want to be looking around each and every time you need a simple job done. One good technique I’ve seen used is for a marketer to spend a full month on a single technique learning every aspect they can about it. At the end of a year, you will have a strong working knowledge of those twelve aspects you chose to develop, and you may even find a few that you strongly excel at, or love doing and will to develop further making you an expert in that particular technique. I have people working for me who can design amazing banners in any shape or size in ten or fifteen minutes flat! They can sell these banners for $50 to $100 per set of 5 easily making a decent income from this talent that doesn’t even seem like work to them.

SEO is going to be an extremely valuable skill to learn, and if you only had this one skill, you could probably make a pretty good living. No matter how pretty your website or blog is, if you don’t have SEO working for you, then you won’t be getting traffic, and hence sales. Also, by taking on as little as four clients on a monthly basis you can easily make an extra $2000.00 a month to help subsidize your internet marketing income. Not to mention it will enable you to drive traffic to any offer, or website you decide to launch in the future, as most of you know we rarely settle on just one website, and many have ten or twenty sites earning for them.

Organization skills are important, as you will have many things on the go, hopefully you don’t derive all of your income from a single source, and so you will have to concentrate on keeping the many balls you have in the air at the same time. It’s important to be able to prioritize your workload. I find keeping lists helps me accomplish much more that without. I have a to do list each day, that I need to accomplish, and another for my monthly goals to help keep me profitable and on track with my business.
Remember even if it’s just a blog you write in, if you want to make money from it, you have to treat it like a business.

Writing skill and style will definitely be an asset to you as an internet marketer, because as you’ve all heard or read before, “Content is king”. The more content you have written, the more research you will have to have done, and the more of an expert you will become in your chosen niche. If you can rank one article for a competitive keyword it will drive hundreds of visitors to your site each and every month. Now what do you think happens when you have a hundred, or three hundred articles driving traffic each month? That number increases exponentially, and will continue to work for you for years to come, both in driving traffic, and also in helping you build backlinks to your site which will in turn rank all your articles higher bringing even more traffic. You don’t have to have perfect punctuation, or be a bestselling author, but you do need to be able to get your point across, and keep the interest of your readers. Don’t worry, eventually over time you will come to develop a style of writing that is all your own, and the more you write, the better you will become at it!

Internet Marketing is of course very much about marketing! So you’re going to want to build this particular skill as fast as possible. I tend to read a new book on marketing each month or two, and always come away learning at least one new technique or idea that I can use to my benefit in one or more areas of my business. Another good idea, is to make sure you sign up for the top ten marketers in your niche, so you can see exactly how they are marketing to their customers, how often, in what way, etc.

Copywriting is often mistaken for writing, but if you’ve even hired a copywriter you already know there is a little bit of a difference. A writer will typically charge anywhere from $20 to $50 for 1000 words, a copywriter will most likely charge well over $1000.00 for the same amount. Copywriting is the art of compelling your reader to take a certain action such as making a purchase.  For myself, this is probably the hardest of the skills I’ve already mentioned, but if you manage to master it, will be the difference between making $2000.00 a month in sales and $50,000 a month!

Technical support, because you have a website, complete with plugins, and what not all running on a server somewhere you will need to have an understanding of how those things work together in order to get them back online in case of any disasters that you encounter. I don’t know how many times I’ve installed some great new plugin only to find that I’d screwed up my entire site, or worse wake up to find that something failed during the night, or you’ve fallen victim to some malicious hacker. That said, prevention can often be the best medicine, always make sure you have a backup schedule in place, so that you can restore your site if need be at a moment’s notice. I backup bi-weekly so that I’m never more than a few days out if catastrophe strikes. Depending on how often you change or update your site, you may be able to get away with a weekly or monthly schedule. It’s usually as simple as clicking a button in your Cpanel but it can save you time and money when you happen to need it! Should you happen to find yourself in a situation where you have no backup, contact your hosting provider, they often will have a backup that is perhaps a week old and will restore your site for you for a nominal fee, or perhaps even for free.

These are just a few of the skillsets needed, and each of your businesses and individual needs will differ, you may be coming into this as a former website designer in which case you’re already an expert in a couple of different aspects, others will be coming in with a business degree, or background, and still others will be coming in blind with none of the required skills in which case you’ll want to schedule a part of each of your day to education and research. You’ll be surprised how fast your knowledge grows on each of the aspects of your online business

Good luck to all of you!

SEO – Best Techniques for Copywriting

SEO CopywritingThe reason why so many businesses require professional SEO copywriters on their staff these days is because solid copy is essential for the placement of your website into the top list of results on search engines. This can best be achieved with special targeted ways of writing articles and the basic content of your website that will help not only place your website into the top, but also keep the audience enthralled.

One of the most important tools that you can use as an SEO copywriter is to keep the audience in mind. When people are searching the internet, they are not in the same mindset that they may be in when they are reading a newspaper, and as such they want shorter, more straightforward pieces of information. There are a number of journalistic techniques that can help bolster this, but there are other ways to break down the information further.

This information could then be broken down into SEO friendly lists, bullet points, or short paragraphs that are listed with headlines. These can be color coded or bolded to give them an extra visual impact, and then further reinforced with relevant photographs and captions. With the rules of search engine optimization, every piece of text, including the title of the website, could be included in the overall keyword percentage level.

It’s important to make sure that your copy, even if it is SEO formulated, is still informative, error-free, and helpful to the user. This will keep people coming back to read more and that could boost the overall rating and success level of your site in the long run. If you can manage to have other sites link back to you, that could also help the rating level in the search engines. All of these are but a few things to keep in mind when you are starting the process of pulling together a solid and successful website, in order to make money from it.

By incorporating just a few of these techniques into your copywriting, you should be able to experience a far higher yield of traffic to your website, and an increase in the corresponding pay that you may receive as a result. These SEO tactics are fairly simple in theory and practice alike, which is what makes them one of the easiest forms of internet marketing. However, for the most optimal results, it’s best to combine several different tactics at once.
