You must have heard thousand times that content is king in search engine optimization. But is it truly that important? And even if content is important, how far articles and words can push your page ranking up in search result pages.

First of all, we must face that SEO marketers can do almost nothing without content. But we don’t also deny that simple bulk-generated articles with vanilla words won’t take you anywhere. Let’s face it. All major search engines – Google, Yahoo and Bing – are assigning more weight to contents, which carry value for target audiences. The term ‘Page authority’ is used mainly to express the search engine evaluation of a web pages value. Often with modern search engines the higher your page authority the better chance you have for high ranking and traffic. Often it’s quite difficult to explain why the authority of one page is more than that of another. However much of this is due to how search engines measure authority.

6 Ways to Make a Living From SEO

How Can I Do That?

1. Keyword Research

Know your competition. Use some free tools like SEOmoz Term Extractor, Open Site Explorer and Alexa Search Analytics to keep tabs on hot keywords in your niche. Take notes on what keywords your competitors rank highly for, which keywords rank poorly for them, and even the mediocre terms.

These tools also help you keep tabs on keywords that are diminishing in use so that you can update your website accordingly. Older websites, i.e., established domains, have more trust than newer websites, so older sites tend to rank higher for those mediocre terms than fresh competitors.

2. On-Page Optimization

Make sure to use keywords in outgoing links, title tags, meta descriptions, H1 and H2 headers, in bold face, and in the ALT text of images. Keep “keyword density” in mind here. Keyword density is the ratio of keywords and key phrases to the total number of words on a page. Blogs benefit from a keyword ratio of 2% to 5%, while the optimum ratio for eCommerce websites is slightly higher at 4% to 8%.

3. Content Like No Other

When writing about the latest product or event in your niche, avoid regurgitating what your competitors have written on the topic. Go into greater depth where possible with facts, stats and graphs or charts. When writing opinion pieces or reviews, do so with more clarity and depth than your competition. In short, valuable content is writing that’s easy to understand, factual (therefore reliable), and straight to the point.

4. Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising

Paying to have your website at the top of the search engines guarantees more traffic, a precursor to potential sales. The PPC model is affiliate-based, and as a merchant you want solid affiliates. The cost per click (CPC) paid to search engines varies based on factors such as which search engine is used, keyword competitiveness, the day and time a visitor is surfing the web, along with visitor interest, intent and location. Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing, and Microsoft adCenter operate under a complex bid-based model.

5. Linking

Building quality backlinks takes time, but the rewards can be tremendous. The goal is to have websites that rank high in the search engines link back to you. This generates a ton of traffic.

6. Blogging

Run a companion blog to your website that shows customers you are passionate about your niche. Not just passionate about what can be sold, but a fellow enthusiast, be it camping, marketing, martial arts, whatever. Writing Great Content

For many, the thought of writing may seem a little frightening, I mean even with spell check we all seem to let a few spelling mistakes fall through the cracks that then appear for the entire world to see, and criticize.

So how exactly do we offer up great content for our readers? I mean we’d all agree that our readers are important and deserving of something special, and interesting to read on a regular basis. And furthermore since we as blog owners love the resulting traffic, we’d of course prefer it if they were getting those great articles from us!

So what is a blogger/writer to do?

  • Write ahead of time, don’t wake up at 8:00 am knowing you need to publish at 9:00 because chances are you won’t be mentally prepared, and by waiting till the last minute you are forcing yourself to produce quality, rather than letting it come naturally.

I don’t know about you, but creativity isn’t something I can turn on at will. I have days where I can write a great article in no time at all, and others where I simply sit and stare at the screen, occasionally writing and then deleting the drivel I’d written, and hoping for some creative inspiration to strike.

  • Have a planned writing schedule. Sometimes having a schedule of what topics you’d like to cover, and when can take some of the stress of continually finding new subjects to write about out of the equation. Many sites have something similar to a calendar of events, only it’s more of an editorial calendar.
  • Research your topic. This might seem like common sense to some, but I often see articles that could be bolstered up with a few pertinent facts and figures that would go a long way toward shoring up the article, and giving it more substance.
  • Stay on topic. If you have a personal development blog where you go through the trials and tribulations of life, and how to get the most out of it, then wandering off to discuss your favorite keyword research tool, might not be the best idea. The readers you’ve attracted are there for the current topic, and articles, and many won’t even own a website or blog.
  • Make sure you follow through, if you tell your readers you are going to join the gym next week, and start sharing your experience, and successes with them, and then simply forget, or change your mind many of them will see it as a lack of commitment to not only yourself, but also to them, your readers!
  • Write informative “how to” articles that do something to either help your reader, or simply improve some aspect of their lives. Too often we are being sold in life, and too few seem to be the help we need from time to time.
  • Interact with your readers. We all know how much we appreciate comments on our blog, but if we don’t take the time to respond to as many readers (hopefully all if it’s possible) as we can, we’ll soon find fewer and fewer people taking the time to engage with us. The comments section of your blog is a great place to not only get to know your readers, but also find out what they enjoy most about your site, and perhaps what they’d like to see in the future.
  • Read through the finished post to make sure you’ve covered all the point’s you wanted to make. From time to time while I’m writing I’ll skip from one paragraph to the next, and if ever I forgot to head back and finish that first paragraph, I’m sure my readers would be wondering what the heck I was trying to get across. The simple act of reading your post before you publish it, can often show you things you might otherwise have overlooked.
  • Two words, “spell check”. Most programs have it built in, and even most email services include it as a standard feature. Nobody (least of all your loyal readers) expects you to be perfect, or even 90% grammatically correct, but taking the time to read through, and spell check a document can often show you a spelling mistake or two that take no more than a second to fix. The end result will be well worth it!
  • And last, but not least have fun with it! This isn’t like when we were back in college and being graded on every aspect of what we wrote. Most of us (including the professional bloggers among us) write because we enjoy it and have a need to share our knowledge, thoughts and experiences with others. In most cases it is this willingness to help others that determines how successful we are at what we do.

Text Links Versus Image Ads

Most visitors pass through one of two types of links.  Text links are when you string together a word, phrase or sentence that’s hyperlinked to another domain.  Image ads are things like banners, button, and pictures – graphical images that are hyperlinked with a URL.

Both types of links have their benefits and drawbacks.  Which type you use will be based on your site and your traffic – and you should ideally test both types to see which performs best with your particular demographic.

In general, text ads tend to pull a lot more clicks than image ads, because people have become “banner blind.”  That means people have learned to ignore banners, because they know they’re ads.

Text ads are a part of every website, so they’re harder to ignore.  This is one reason why AdSense is so successful.  Of course, some sites could benefit from a few image ads.  If your site is primarily text, you might be able to make it look more appealing through the use of a few graphical banners.

Choose attractive banners with a clear call-to-action, such as banners that clearly state, “Click here for ____!”  New Internet users may not realize they can click graphics, so it’s important for banners to have this kind of call-to-action.

Just be careful not to overdo the ads on your site.  Two or three graphics per page is plenty.  If you put more than this, you risk your site looking like a banner farm, and visitors may leave before they even have time to read any of your content.

Text links are generally more effective than banners.  They can be blended in with your content and can look more like recommendations than ads.  For some reason, people prefer to buy through recommendations rather than blatant ads, so text links can help you get a higher click-through ratio than you might get with banner ads.

Coding a text link is very simple.  To create a text link on your site, you need to use the “a href” code.  A simple text link code might look something like this:

<a href=”http://www.domainname.com”>Here’s where the text you want hyperlinked will go.</a>

Coding a banner link is only slightly more complex.  You still use the “a href” code, but you also have to use the “img src” code along with it.  It should look something like this:

<a href=“http://www.domainname.com”><img src=http://www.yourdomain.com/images/banner1.jpg></a>

So the first URL in that piece of code is the URL where you want your traffic to go. The second one is the URL where the image is being hosted on your server. This will make the image show up and when the user hovers his or her mouse over it, they’ll see that it’s clickable.

Make sure you test your links to be sure they’re going to the right place.  If you accidentally link to the wrong place, you could end up losing a lot of money in commissions or sales, so it’s very important to make sure your links are in working order.

Auto bloggers are dead, true SEO rises

Auto bloggers have been the talk of the web for quite some time now, but for what? Auto bloggers bring nothing new to the online world – these people strive to steal other’s works, take credit, and make money from it – but this isn’t funny. A lot of webmasters are sick and tired of auto bloggers ranking for their keywords – and quite frankly, we are too.

..How do I stop an autoblogger? Easy, beat them at their own game – write quality content, and drive backlinks towards your site – that way, they have to work harder, and can’t compete against you. Google has been knocking out a lot of autoblog websites from search, and that’s good news, because true webmasters should be winning – and its always been that way, quality content, over spam.

What if an autoblogger is beating me?

Step up your content writing skills, and guest posts along the way – also build more links – either through link exchanging,  press releases, or article marketing – I’ve yet to see a true webmaster get beat by an auto blogger – why? Because autoblogging is stupid, and very annoying – its not unique, its copying, and really if you copy someone, then strive to be better than them – sure, you can have a highly ranked auto blogger, but what if someone reports you? Then, you’re screwed.

 

So, one thing I’d recommend to all webmasters is – work hard if an auto blogger is beating you – strive to have the best content, and strive to outlast auto bloggers – if Google can strive to knock these people out, so can you.

Ya, so of course, auto blogging is dead, and true SEO is rising.
So, focus on not auto-blogger, but focus on quality content that helps you rank higher – for certain keywords, because we all know that “Content is king”, but it has to be of quality, that way people link you and come to your site for resource – and being unique – nobody likes a copycat – and nobody likes people that copy in order to succeed – so if you run an autoblog, then you need to focus on developing other sites, that aren’t using other’s RSS feeds for content – or anything of that matter.

It’s not hard to come up with your own content, its actually quite easy if you’re a true webmaster, or SEO person that knows how to be creative – so the fact remains, auto blogger is dead, and true SEO is back.

Great job Google for dropping the ban hammer on a lot of the cheating webmasters – they give “true” SEO a bad name, why? Auto blogging sucks and so does the people that copy other’s content – we’re sick of it, Google is sick of it, and I’m pretty sure a lot of other search engines will follow.

For those of you reading this, I’m going to assume you already have a website or blog and are looking for a way to increase the number of visitors you receive to that site. Obviously the more traffic we can generate, the more potential sales we can enjoy. I’m constantly on the lookout for more efficient streams of traffic and love adding them to my inventory of traffic sources.

Today I’m going to talk about a very basic way that each one of you can get more traffic. In fact you can grow your traffic exponentially using this method, and it’s something that every single one of you can do.

I’m sure you’re familiar with the saying “content is king”, well there might be a reason so many people are claiming this to be true. Because it is! Content is what makes the internet go round and round, and it’s what keeps visitors coming back time, and time again.

Let’s say for instance you have 25 pages worth of articles that you’ve written on a topic that ties in with the theme of your blog, whatever that might be. Let’s also say that you’ve done a small amount of SEO, and back linked those articles to the point you are getting 1 visit per day per article. Now 25 visitors might not seem like much, but it’s something you can at least work with.

Br growing the content you have from twenty-five to fifty, you can effectively give yourself fifty landing pages for people to land on your site. Go one step further, and optimize those articles and build a few backlinks to them, and they’ll start to do well in the search engines resulting in even more traffic to your blog.

Using tools to do some keyword research prior to writing the articles is a more advanced trick you can use to zero in on articles that are going to have very little in the way of competition. By spending a bit of time researching topics, prior to writing them you can find areas that have been overlooked, or else haven’t been written about in a long time.

Increasing the number of pages you have on the internet is the easiest way to increase traffic. It also gives you something with which to promote.

In this business you’ve started there are a million things that need to be done, many that you can do yourself, and many that cost a small fortune if you want someone else to do it for you.  A 1000 word article like this one would cost about $25.00 to have someone write for me, and there is no guarantee that I’d agree with the way it was written, or even the content that was contained within it as we all have different skills and talents. I’m pretty sure a writer would do a much better job of punctuation and grammar than spell check or I could do, but the point I wish to get across is solely mine, and therefor easiest for me to explain to my audience. (Plus if there weren’t any errors they’d know it wasn’t mine!) LOL

Always be creating is a habit that you should develop early on, as it will go a long way toward your success and prosperity.  Human beings dislike boredom and will try and fill those empty moments with something, anything. They’ll surf the web, watch TV, play video games, go eat something, look out the window, and just about a million other things to avoid boredom. We also love to accomplish things, and revel in achievements and small successes even if they happen to be small.

So how can we use this to our advantage? We fill empty moments with small tasks that work for our business, and push us further toward our goals. Instead of just sitting there while a program installs itself take that two minutes and head over to one of your favourite blogs, and leave a comment for the site owner. You’ve just built a back link, and one more road a potential visitor can travel to get to your site. Now taken by itself it isn’t much, but over the course of a year, it can add up quite nicely.

Make a list of tasks that you can do that can help your business, content that you can create for it. In this business the more assets you have, and have built the closer you are to the success of your business and to your goals as well. You should always be building your assets, and moving forward.

Each of our businesses are slightly different so I’ll use mine as an example because I believe many of my readers are either in the same industry, or are entering into it. These are some of the assets I can spend my time working on, and content that I can use.

Blog Comments
both on other blogs and responding to questions or comments on mine. These only take a minute and contribute to the traffic in a small way.

Write a Paragraph (or chapter) in my new e-book
I write and sell e-books for profit and to educate my readers so by continually adding content to whichever book I’m working on at the moment the closer I am to completing it.

Record a Podcast
I’m currently in the process of converting all 400+ posts of mine into audio versions for those people who either can’t read them, or simply prefer them that way. If it goes smoothly it only takes a few minutes to record and upload one and eventually they will all get completed this way using nothing more than “spare” time.

Brainstorm Topics
I’m continually looking for new topics to write about so spending a few minutes can result in a handful of topics for me to write on when I decide to work on my next article. There is nothing worse than having to publish in 30 minutes and having no clue what I’m going to write about.

Write an article
If I have the time then writing tomorrows post, or even just writing a “spare” to have sitting on my hard drive for one of those days when I can’t think of anything to write is a great way to spend 45 min or an hour. Imagine having a months’ worth of quality articles stockpiled in case of holidays, or emergency, or simply to have as an added asset. At $25.00 a pop, you’ve just built yourself a $750.00 asset in the form of targeted articles for your blog.

Write a Guest Post
You can never have too many guest posts, and if you understand the value of a relevant back link, and the associated traffic that can come with it; you know that having a small stock pile of these goes a long way toward the promotion of your blog. These can also be used for article marketing as well.

E-Mail your list
Research a product, service, or tip that you can offer up to your subscribers, and send out a quick email letting them know about it. Worst case scenario you don’t make any sales, best you do. Either way it’s a good chance to develop that relationship you’re building with them.

Add to your social network
If your adding followers, or Fans on Facebook, or any other social network for that matter, spend a few minutes and add a few relevant people or seek out one’s to add to your network. If you are a member of Twiends, then go invest a few minutes into visiting some of the websites, or watching the video’s to build up some credits that you can then convert into fans, followers, views, or visitors. I have 4,000 credits in there from messing around in my spare time, and I still have a huge following, and fan base.

Educate yourself
with so many aspects to our business there are hundreds, or thousands of things that we could be learning. If you’re like me, you no doubt have a few SEO or Internet Marketing courses on your hard drive. Take a few minutes to watch some of the video’s, or simply surf the web in search of information on a topic you’d like to learn more about. If those fail, there are always good old fashioned books to keep you going!

These are just a small handful of ideas, and there are dozens that you can come up with on your own I’m sure. The main point is to always be creating content for your visitors, or assets for your business. Traffic, readers, Followers, Fans, back links, articles, guest posts, video’s, podcasts, affiliate reviews…. These are all assets that you could be building that will have a benefit for your business.
