The Pros and Cons of Echo Chambers in Social Media

The Pros and Cons of Echo Chambers in Social Media

Let’s face it; we are all completely obsessed with social media. I’m extremely guilty of this; not a day passes when I haven’t checked my Facebook (several times!), fired off a few tweets and had a browse through Pinterest. However, I recently read a blog post by Ciaran Norris in which he questions whether the internet has in essence become a big echo chamber- we hear what we want and do not venture far from our own personal safety nets where people share our opinions and beliefs. He argues that debate is dead due to this evolution of online media. A really interesting read, that got me thinking; what is the impact of these echo chambers on social media networks?

When you take a step back and look at it, it would seem that the big social networks are inherently designed to allow these echo chambers to form; on Facebook you only see news from your friends, the people whom you have decide to allow into your community therefore have some shared interest or relationship with. Likewise on Twitter, you choose who to follow and interact with.  It could be argued that social media sites such as StumbleUpon and Pinterest somewhat attempt to alleviate this, allowing us to find new and interesting things. However, I don’t think these sites are as free from echo chambers as you would hope.  You can set preferences and interests on StumbleUpon and follow boards and people on Pinterest that interest you.

So what does this mean for social media? My initial reaction was one of horror! I have always believed that the internet is a brilliant way to discover new and exciting things and broaden our horizons, not become stuck parroting each other’s views and staying where we feel safe in the knowledge that our views and ideals are the consensus. Where is the innovation and interest?

However, after closer inspection, I believe there are both pros and cons to the echo chamber effect- we should be aware of both of these before deciding whether they are bad or good for the social media.

The cons of echo chambers are clear to perceive:

  • We are less likely to find new and interesting articles and opinions on the internet, decreasing interesting  debate and discussion
  • We are so embroiled in our own social media echo chamber that it might become detrimental if we are utilizing our social media networks to promote a business; I have seen businesses become so excited about getting involved with social media that they forget to target their customers, rather engaging in echo chambers with others in their field.
  • Social media is completely dependent upon seeing something that someone you follow has followed, Retweeted or liked;  if we restrict ourselves to these safe little communities how can we find anything completely new? This could prove very problematic for businesses trying to get the word out about their company.

Yet, I think that if you are using social media as a business, there are some very distinct pros to be found from echo chambers:

  • Find the echo chamber communities of your customers and engage with them. This could bring a whole new range of clients to your business. Find the most frequent tweeter or poster and communicate with them, meaning information about your company may filter more quickly to those less active members
  • Communicate with key players in your field of business. As long as you do not ignore your customers, engaging in the community of the big fish in your field could be invaluable for advice, tips and ideas.

I think that echo chambers are interesting in both good and bad ways for social media and internet usage.  When used cleverly, this effect of social media could be a brilliant marketing tool. Just be careful not to let them take over your internet usage; keep investigating fresh and exciting things and engaging with your customers.

Creating a Vision Statement

Creating a Vision Statement

First off, exactly what is a vision statement?

Well, simply put it’s the vision you have for your business or company and encapsulates what it is you are trying to build.

A vision statement is slightly different from a mission statement in that it is typically an internal document meant both for yourself, and any employees you might have. The mission statement is usually geared towards your customers, or client’s perspective.

They can either be short and sweet as in the following example from Ford:

”To become the world’s leading Consumer Company for automotive products and services”.

Or longer, and more in depth as in the case of Gillette:

“The Gillette Company’s Vision is to build Total Brand Value by innovating to deliver consumer value and customer leadership faster, better and more completely than our competition. This Vision is supported by two fundamental principles that provide the foundation for all of our activities: Organizational Excellence and Core Values.

Attaining our Vision requires superior and continually improving performance in every area and at every level of the organization.

Our performance will be guided by a clear and concise strategic statement for each business unit and by an ongoing Quest for Excellence within all operational and staff functions.

This Quest for Excellence requires hiring, developing and retaining a diverse workforce of the highest caliber. To support this Quest, each function employs metrics to define, and implements processes to achieve, world-class status”.

My own vision statement here at PLR Internet Marketing is:

“Our vision at PLR Internet Marketing is to provide a quality online resource that is dedicated to helping individuals with the information to achieve financial growth in the online world. We specialize in showing people how to make money with their blogs, through Internet marketing, affiliate marketing, PLR, as well as SEO techniques in order that they may experience the freedom that comes with owning an online business. With your success, comes our success!”

Why create one?

Well, unless you have a clear idea, and a direction, and are able to articulate that idea and direction, there is a better than even chance you won’t ever arrive at your final destination, or if you arrive it may not be as you had pictured, or imagined it. Knowing where you’re going in business may only be one step in the journey, but it’s considered a fairly important one!

Depending on where you are with your business, and how clear your idea of what you’re hoping to achieve happens to be creating a vision statement might take anywhere from a few minutes, to an afternoon to complete.

It’s important to note that while a vision statement should help shape your business over the years to come, there is no reason that it can’t change and adapt as your business grows. Over time, as your business grows your direction may change, or focuses shift. Don’t be afraid to change or adapt your vision statement to reflect this.

What to do once you have it?

Hang it in your office for all to see, include it in your operations manual or business plan. This document is just one more piece that is to become the business you and your team are building!

Good luck to you!

Having an exit plan

Having an exit plan

I’m not sure if it’s because of the fact that I work from home while most of my friends still work for someone else, but I seem to hear a lot of complaints about people’s vocations, and a general desire they all seem to have to do something on their own in regards to starting up their own business.

Now it doesn’t matter if you’re interested in internet marketing or landscaping the process looks very similar. For starters you actually DO need to implement some sort of exit strategy or plan unless you fully expect a business complete with competing salary to simply drop into your lap. (Not going to happen by the way.)

In order to support ourselves and our families it’s most likely going to continue to take eight hours of work daily, and if we’re going to be honest that number will likely be higher when we first start out. I know for myself I was often working ten to twelve hours for the first year or so. For those who simply can’t spare that kind of time, don’t be discouraged, it can still be accomplished by working either longer, or even smarter!

Rather than having a vague goal such as “I’d like to be my own boss”, try figuring out exactly what it is you’d like to spend your days doing that can reasonably be expected to bring you in a stream of revenue. If you can figure out how to get paid for doing something you enjoy, or better yet love, you’ll be one step closer to your goal of actually working for yourself.

Having a plan is crucial to your success. You need to know what it is you’re going to be doing to earn revenue (preferably a proven revenue model such as trading a product or service for cash) and know what steps you can take to implement those ideas. Too often people start out with the idea of starting a blog and hoping they’ll soon be independently wealthy with nothing more than the occasional blog post.

While there are tons of websites online that manage to earn a decent (or even obscene) amount of money from nothing more than the passive revenue derived from advertising, the amount of work that went into those sites in order to generate the amount of visitors they receive daily would stagger your mind! Often they’ve taken years to build themselves up to the levels you might be currently seeing them at.

Many online marketers start out selling other people’s products (affiliate marketing) and that works amazingly well for them, but ideally most of us would like to create something with which to call our own. Developing your own product takes time, but when you consider the fact that once you’ve built it, you can expect to not only sell it for years to come, but also add to it, enhance it, and grow it into something even larger and more profitable as well.

Starting out with an eBook is probably the simplest product development and can be achieve with nothing more than an hour or two of committed writing on a regular basis. It’s then a simple matter to expand on that, and add in charts, graphs, supporting video’s, programs, etc. until it turns into a full-fledged (and full priced) product that can then be sold for a substantial amount.

After you’ve gotten your product to the level at which you feel it can be promoted heavily don’t try and go it your own. Instead try to recruit affiliates of your own to take up your cause and promote your product. The results will easily be ten times what you yourself could achieve, and your reach will effectively be expanded as well.

Most of us can manage an hour or two each day even if we happen to be working a full time job to support ourselves at the present time. We can likely also squirrel away a few dollars each day toward the launch of our upcoming business venture.

A typical business takes up to three years to become profitable, and if you’re smart you’ll leverage the time you can spare now, and the income you can spare from within your current budget to start building the foundation that will become the dream you currently have for working from home, being your own boss, or even simply having a secondary income that can be built passively over time.

Develop a plan then work the plan”

The Importance of Article Marketing in Your Promotions

Without marketing efforts, your online business will flop. You have to let the people know you’re online and what you’re all about. One way to easily and inexpensively market your business is by either writing articles or hiring someone to write them for you.

The purpose of these articles is that they can be used to promote your website through the use of backlinks in the articles. Plus, it’s smart strategy for search engine optimization. These articles act as fingers pointing the way to your site and driving traffic there.

Every marketer knows that the more traffic a website receives, the higher the likelihood that sales will also increase. You can’t sell your products if the population isn’t made aware of what you have to offer to them.

If you were to simplify article marketing, it could be defined as advertising. That’s what article marketing does for you. Advertises your business – but it does it a lot cheaper than traditional methods ever could.

Once the articles are written and edited, the next step is to submit them to article directories. Always make sure you use fresh content, because the same article with a few words switched around won’t pass some directories with stringent article approval rules.

When submitting to more than one directory, what happens for the website you’re promoting is that a larger net is cast into the sea of traffic than there would be if you didn’t promote this way.

People searching the Internet find your article, read the content (make it relevant and engaging), and they feel they’ve learned some important information that will help them so they follow the link to learn even more.

Different article directories will have different rules concerning backlinks. Some won’t allow them in the middle of an article and only want them in your signature while other directories don’t care where you put them.

Submitting articles to directories should be an ongoing process rather than a “submit and forget it.” The more well-received articles you submit, the more your reputation as an expert will grow and the higher you’ll rank in search engines.

When you write the articles (or have them written) you want to use a specific strategy. For example, if you’re writing about how to make money selling eBooks, you can write articles on the popularity of eBooks, why people buy them and the steps they can take to write their own.

You want to be careful that you give them enough information to make the reader interested and want to click on the link to head over to your site. If you write the articles in an informative way that gives value, then you’ll drive traffic to your site – but if you write it as a hard-hitting sales letter, you’ll end up pushing people away.

10 Tips for Increasing PageRank

10 Tips for Increasing PageRank

PageRank is the process or algorithm that measures the importance of any webpage residing on the World Wide Web. It’s named after Google’s Larry Page rather than “web page” as some believe and is in fact patented by the Stanford University and Not Google. (Google has the exclusive licensing rights which they paid for with 1.8 million shares).

We gripe about it, we love it, hate it, swear it means nothing to us, and yet continually find ourselves checking to see if it may or may not have changed since we last looked. Many swear it holds no value, and yet websites are continually measured by it, and will continue to be until that day when Google decides to pull the PR plug!

So for those of you who don’t care about PageRank, or feel it has no value, you can stop reading. (Why did you start in the first place?) For the rest of us who are interested in increasing it, and squeezing out the last bit of PR juice, read on.

Tip #1:

Treat link building as an ongoing process that needs to be fulfilled each and every day. If you are taking the time to write a blog post, and share it on the social networks (which are back links) then also spend a few minutes on your link building campaign. It’s easy to pay some link builder to build a thousand links to your site, but it’s much more effective to build ten a day over the long haul, and will go much further in the eyes of Google.

Tip #2

Utilize an internal linking system within your blog, or website. There are plugins available for WordPress that will automatically choose keywords that are important to you, and then hyperlink then to related pages within your site. Internal linking is important if you want to pass your PageRank throughout the inner pages of your blog.

Tip #3

Do your competitive research. This is something that should be done before starting a business, or launching a site (in my opinion), but gets overlooked in the excitement of the possibilities ahead. Take a look at the top ten sites in your niche, and see where they are getting their links from.  If they left a comment on a PR 6 article on Mashable, follow suit, if they wrote a guest post for a popular tech blog, get out your keyboard and start writing.

Chances are the top sites in your niche didn’t get to the number one spot by accident. You can capitalize on their hard work and start building up a similar link portfolio. When you’ve finished with one competitor move on to the next, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll occupy the number one spot for yourself!

Tip #4

Write content that people are going to be inclined to link to, “how to” articles, or diagrams and infographics tend to do very well. If you try and put out high quality link bait once each month, you’ll increase the amount of links that point to that article. You can leverage those articles by linking to sites within your network (see Tip #6) to take advantage of these highly linked articles to point back to important pages or sites within your network.

Tip #5

Comment often on other websites, but don’t leave things to chance. Rather than simply visiting your favorite site and leaving a comment on the newest post (which has zero PageRank at this time) scan the site first and locate its highest PR pages and leave comments on those pages instead.

Tip #6

Use your network! Most of us own more than one website; often we spend time and energy into increasing the various measurement aspects of each of those sites, including its PageRank. Make sure you are including links to your own sites from the rest of your network. If you have an inner page with a PR 4, or 5 use that page to link to yourself. Take advantage of

Tip #7

Quality over quantity! If you could build just one single high quality link each week, you’d notice a dramatic increase in your Page Rank in a very short time. Granted getting a PR 7 or 8 Backlink is difficult at times, the reward is well worth the effort.

For those of you who earn their living online, you most likely spend a fair bit of time “online”. Keep an eye out during your travels for opportunities to grab a link, either through a comment, setting up a profile, an exchange, or perhaps a guest post. Chances are you’re visiting several sites already that could benefit your own site, but are simply wandering past without noticing the missed opportunity.

Tip #8

Build backlinks to your backlinks! What I mean is we’ve all spent time building up web 2.0 properties that point to our main sites, but have you invested time in building links to those properties? If you’ve invested in Squidoo Lenses, or Hub Pages, then also spend some time building backlinks to those pages. Because many of those sites sit favorably already with Google it won’t be hard to increase the PR of your pages, and of course you’ve made sure to link to your own website from those pages right?

Tip #9

Stop giving link juice to pages that don’t need it. We’ve all got those Privacy policy pages, contact us, or Earnings disclaimers on our websites, but do you really care if those pages have PR? Use the NoFollow attribute on them and save your juice for pages that actually do matter to you. Pages that will increase traffic because a PR 4 will drive you higher in the SERPS and allow you to rank for the keywords you targeted on that particular page.

Tip #10

This one goes against previous tips in that it actually encourages linking out generously. Now while you can be stingy and limit the number of pages and websites you link to and keep every ounce of PageRank juice to yourself, chances are there won’t be too many other websites or bloggers who will be inclined to link to you. By being generous (but smart) with your linking activities you’ll encourage other webmasters to link to you which of course will increase the PageRank of your website.

It’s important to remember that link building is something that should be ongoing. It’s by consistent effort that we achieve most of what’s desirable, and that includes a high PageRank.

Chasing Online Traffic And No Down Line to Show For It

Chasing Online Traffic And No Down Line to Show For It

As a network marketer who wants to build an online presence to grow your business, are you chasing traffic with no results, no matter what you have tried?

Buying another on line prospecting system or webinar or another ebook  about some social media attraction trick, and then adapting it to your network marketing business, with no results, did you expect this?

So far, is it any easier or more effective than simply building your business with traditional, offline, MLM marketing techniques? It doesn’t seem that the promise of online marketing matches the hype!

Results in network marketing, no matter how you market, means a strong and active down line that provides an ample income for you and your family. It also means that your down line has successfully incorporated the marketing practices that they learned from you and that they are building thriving businesses of their own.

And, there lies the difference between our business and affiliate marketing or other online businesses. Network marketing requires a different approach to building traffic because it requires building a sense of trust and confidence in ourselves as leaders that other online businesses don’t need.

Keep in mind that our business builds for the long term, that we must teach before we earn the extraordinary incomes that can be had in our business, that we only need a few to enjoy those levels of income. And, that can’t be forced, but must be nurtured one recruit at a time.

An online network marketing recruiting site does not need first page rankings on search engines. Stop and think about that for a moment, then read that sentence again. You do not need first page search engine rankings. You only need enough traffic to build your first level of down line business builders. Then, you must teach them to duplicate your work. And, so on.

Affiliate marketers and other online marketers need high rankings because they have very little, to no, opportunities for repeat business, so they must constantly churn traffic with offers on tens, even hundreds, of squeeze page sites to build contact lists. Then, they market more products to their list, and share them with others to earn their incomes, a few dollars at a time.

This pressure to drive traffic to web sites, this absolute requirement to have first page search engine rankings is what has caused an explosion of offerings of software and “secrets” to bring in more sales, and it is not necessary with an honest, ethical network marketing business.

Yes, traffic is what will bring business builders, but you must build your site to attract the right kind of visitors. And, just as importantly, you must tell them whether they are the right kind of visitor for you!

You must describe the kind of visitor and recruit you want, and you must tell them what kind of leader that you are. That builds the credibility that compels visitors to take the next step, whatever that is for your business.

So, stop chasing traffic and start building a site that brings the kind of entrepreneur that you want to teach. Relax and find other sites that have the kind of visitor you are looking for, and learn from what they are doing.

Use the basic, and safe, SEO methods to build your site for the long term. When you get results, build on them. When you find compatible sites to yours, link to them. When your down line business builders go online, have them link to your site.

So, to stop chasing online traffic that brings no results, figure out what kind of leader you are and show yourself to the online community by using all of the basic tools at your disposal. Your site will be rewarded with visitors who have responded to your leadership and will be eager to learn from  you.

And, finally, keep in mind that a good network marketing business only needs a very small number of active business builders who are eager to have what you have!

Dripable: The Back Link Solution

For many online entrepreneurs and website owners Search Engine Optimization (Commonly referred to as SEO) is something that requires a tremendous amount of their time, effort, and money. Link building in particular is a tedious and time consuming task that requires a great deal of consistent commitment in order to be effective. Build backlinks, and move up the search engine rankings. Stop and slide back down again!

The one ingredient all website owners are looking for is traffic, and with an increased search engine presence, you’ll be receiving more visitors for the various keywords your website or blog ranks for. When you consider that most websites rank for hundreds of keywords in one position or another, you can see the benefit to moving those keyword rankings from several pages down, to the much more enviable positions closer to the top.

Using a drip feed blast system has the advantage over traditional link building efforts, in that the growth is consistent. If you are building a thousand back links a day, and seven or eight hundred of them are “sticking”, these efforts are quickly going to be noticed by the various search engines.

One important consideration is that these backlinks won’t be found all at the same time. They will get discovered slowly and over time, but at a consistent growth rate which is important in the eyes of the ever watchful Google.

Too often a website owner will blast his site with ten thousand back links, and then simply stop. This obvious tactic is easy to spot, and can actually do your site more harm than good. It is much better to have them spread out in a consistent manner over a longer period of time.

One thing I always look for when considering a new service is do they themselves believe enough in their product to offer me, the consumer a trial account to see for myself how things work on the “inside”! Dripable offers you a FREE one week trial account that will allow you to check out the back end, setup a campaign, and even build a ton of backlinks that you then get to keep regardless of your purchasing choice.

Plans & Pricing:

With three convenient plans to choose from depending on your level of growth requirements, there is something for everyone regardless of SEO budget, and did I mention the best part? They do all the work!

  • $47.00 Plan 1 – This will get you a consistent growth of 1000 links per day.
  • $67.00 Plan 2 – A solid 2000 back links built to your links each and every day.
  • $97.00 Plan 3 – A serious plan for serious people that will see up to 4000 links build per day!

The back links are divided equally between blog comments, and forum profiles.

The great thing about having access to this much back linking power is that you can easily add links to sites you might otherwise have just left. I’m talking about your:

  • Guest posts
  • Article Marketing Assets
  • Hubpages
  • Squidoo Lenses
  • Web 2.0 properties
  • Linkedin Profile (yes people SEO these in order to show up first)
  • Twitter pages, and Fan pages
  • And just about anything else you can think of!

Getting Started:

The first thing you’re going to want to take advantage is their free 7 day trial offer in order to test out the system, and help assist you in your decision to pick up a monthly plan. The registration form is straight forward with only your name, chosen password and email required.

The trial accounts are reviewed manually so you may have to wait a day or two to get approved as they limit the quantity they push through each day. Once you’ve been approved you’ll receive an email and you can quickly setup your campaigns and their team will start building you 300 blog comment back links, and 300 forum profile back links each day.

Logging in:

Logging in is a simple matter of providing your username and password at the prompt. The Username isn’t case sensitive, but the password of course is. In order to save time on following login, slide the “remember me” check over and hit the login button.

Once you’ve entered your user name, and password you’ll be presented with the dashboard where you’ll instantly notice that they have gone with a very user friendly display, and the system itself is as close to “push button” as I’ve ever seen.

Note: I’m sure you noticed the fact that you can easily get an extended trial by simply giving an honest review on the system to your own readers. Talk about a win/win situation!

Setting up your first campaign couldn’t be simpler! You merely click “Add new project” then choose between basic and advanced (I’d recommend basic for first time users), and then give your project a title, add your list of keywords one line at a time, and then any URL’s that you’d like to build back links to (also one per line).  At this price you can even afford to build back links to your back links!

Case Study:

Like most people I took a hit with the recent Panda update that took place in April, and July respectively. Keywords that were sitting on page one or two dropped to page one-hundred.  At first, I focused on creating more content, but that didn’t seem to change anything. Traffic was down as much as forty percent, and as you can imagine, sales were also down.

After implementing the Dripable system I watched both my keyword rankings, and my traffic levels to see just how they’d respond. Almost immediately (within days) my traffic was back to normal, and starting to grow once more.

The keywords I was tracking moved up steadily and consistently. I should note that some of these were extremely competitive keywords with a quarter of a billion competing pages listed in Google.

I will also point out that these keywords “danced” around a bit, before settling into a position. One morning they’d be sitting on page one, and the next low down page two. These moves are normal, and are simply a matter of your website settling into place in its final location.

Tutorials:

Now while the system is incredibly easy and intuitive to use, the makers of the Dripable system have seen fit to include some easy to follow tutorials that outline how to do each of the steps involved. Tutorials cover all the relevant topics you might need help with, such as:

  • Creating a trial account
  • Resetting your password
  • Logging into the system
  • Upgrading your account
  • Trial expiration
  • Payment Failure
  • Reports Overview
  • Opening a support ticket
  • Creating a schedule (new feature they’ve added)
  • Fixing scheduling errors
  • And much, much more!

There are currently screencast tutorials only, but they are in the process of having some video tutorials completed as well.

Support:

Having a solid support system in place is just as important to a growing company as it is to the end user experiencing a problem. I decided to test out the support system by sending a general query with a low priority in order to time just how long it would take staff to respond to a question. Despite setting the priority to “low” I had my answer within 12 hours.

Reporting system:

Each day you’ll receive reports in .txt format that you can download to your computer. The reports will be broken down by either blog comments or profiles and will itemize each site a link was built to. You can then use a program to check the stickiness of the comments if you’re so inclined.

One thing I noticed in the reports that is worth mentioning is the fact that they’ve been over delivering each and every time, generally in the neighborhood of seven to ten percent. These extra links are a totally unexpected bonus that the company is giving out entirely for our benefit.

In Closing:

This system is really a great fit for any businesses and individuals who fall into any of the following categories:

  • Don’t have the link building experience to build thousands of links daily.
  • Don’t have the time to build thousands of links daily.
  • Individuals who recognize that link building is a task that can be outsourced effectively which will result in more time for them to actually build and run their businesses.
  • Anyone looking to get a jump on their competition at an affordable price.

I can honestly say that I’ll be using this system for many months ahead in an effort to not only streamline some of my SEO efforts, but also so that I can focus my time where it’s needed most, on my content and thus my readers.

The Dripable team is a group of hard working and conscientious marketers who have been online successfully for many years. They took a look at the market, and what was needed, and then went ahead and built a solution!

Is Affiliate Marketing or Network Marketing Right For You? – Part II

Network Marketing

Now, lets take a look at network marketing and its differences from affiliate marketing. Network marketing is in its infancy online. Most network, or multilevel, marketers build their businesses offline through personal contacts or offline advertising like classified ads and local flyers, even flee markets and local athletic events such as marathons and high school sports.

So, the opportunity to get in front of other network marketers who are just now starting the move to online businesses is high. This does not mean an easy or a necessarily quick path to a good income for you, but it has the potential for less sophisticated competition in your market niche than you will find in affiliate marketing.

Next, the ability to earn a generous income in network marketing comes from attracting and recruiting business builders and less from pure product sales. The highest incomes in network marketing comes from leaders who took full advantage of the compensation plans that reward finding, recruiting, training and supporting others who want a good life from the high recurring incomes that are possible in this business.

That’s not to say that product sales are not important as you build your business, they are. Product sales are the only source of income in legitimate network marketing companies. Keep that in mind as you select which one you will use to build your business.

Product sales serve as an additional recruiting tool for building your network marketing business as your customers form bonds with the products from having good experiences and getting comments from friends and family as they lose weight, look healthier from skin care, feel healthier from wellness products, etc..

This is more true with consumable products such as health and wellness, skin care and green household products than with service offerings such as telephone, internet and legal services, but nonetheless product users are a source of business builder prospects that is not available in most affiliate marketing offerings as there is less opportunity to build a recurring user base.

There are many network marketing companies offering many different products and services. Like the research necessary in finding the right affiliate products, you will also need to do your homework here. Unfortunately, the compensation plans of network marketing can be very complex and, seemingly, impossible to understand, so you must be very attentive to this aspect of choosing which company to represent.

From a marketing perspective, established network marketing companies will have product material and business recruiting material for you to use as a base for web site copy, blogs and articles, this is not usually the case with most affiliate marketing products.

In a successful online network marketing business, hundreds of mini sites are not necessary. A recruiting site, or a few at most, product sites and effective whitehat traffic generation techniques are sufficient to provide a large and recurring income for you to have the time to enjoy your life.

The site architecture is also different between the two systems. Effective affiliate sites can be simple direct selling sites with an eye catching headline, compelling copy, testimonials and many calls to action spread throughout the site, along with a prominently positioned product satisfaction guarantee.

The architecture of an effective network marketing site is as much a relationship and trust building vehicle as it is a selling site. The need for a deep level of trust in these sites is higher because the perceived consequences of the commitment are higher. Training a new business builder takes time and trust must be established before a prospective business builder will make the financial and emotional commitment to the business leader and the business itself.

Summary

Both affiliate marketing and network marketing can provide large and stable incomes for the people willing to do what is necessary for success. While the differences are less stark than the similarities, each appeals to a different kind of entrepreneur. One, affiliate marketing, draws raw individualists who have no fear of failure and hard work to create the hundreds even thousands of sites to provide them with the independence they crave.

The other, network marketing, appeals to entrepreneurs who want independence and a generous income, but who prefer a more cooperative effort with like minded people and the long lasting professional and personal relationships that are integral to having success in this field. Which one is right for you?

Stake Claim to Your Domain

domain names

A domain name is like a virtual identification card. It’s a way for people to verify your online presence. Many mistakenly believe having a bad domain name is better than not having one at all, which is incorrect.

Having a bad domain name can backfire and even cause you to lose customers. Having a bad domain name makes you look unprofessional while a good domain name leaves a positive impression and fosters a feeling of trust within your clients.

A well chosen domain name will also allow your website to rank higher in search engine results, which in turn allows your site to be seen by even more people. Since your domain name will be on your letterhead, business cards, and more if you choose to take the business offline as well, you’ll want to choose a name that is reflective of your business.

Now that you understand the importance of a domain name, it’s time to make a list of potential domain names for your website. You don’t just have to use your company name.

In fact, it might be better not to if your company name is long or difficult to spell. One company had a difficult name to remember so it launched a website for its most popular product and found that customers were able to remember that domain name. This resulted in better customer conversions and higher search engine rankings since more customers were searching for the product than the company.

If you’re the face of your brand, you might consider using your name as your domain name. For instance, Martha Stewart and Donald Trump are two people that are the face of their business. If that’s the case for you, then you’ll want to use your name as the domain name. But it’s best to use a keyword in your niche.

Once you’ve come up with a list of potential domain names, go through and cross out anything that’s too long. Try to stay under twenty characters so your domain name is easy to remember.

Cross out anything that might have negative connotations. If you’re using several words write them without spaces to be sure that your domain name wouldn’t be potentially offensive.

After you’ve gone through your list and crossed some out, rank these domain names in order of your most favorite ones to your least favorite ones. Go online and research which domain names are available.

You can do this through a popular domain register like Godaddy or NameCheap. Once you find a domain name that’s available, be sure to Google it before buying it. Make sure that no one else is using a similar name for something dishonest, spammy or offensive. While this might seem like a menial task, you don’t want your business confused with a similar website that’s not ethical.

Host Your Own Webinar for Customers and Prospects

hosting a webinar

Do you feel that you have valuable information to share with your customers and prospects that just won’t in text format? Or maybe you know about some breaking news happening within your industry that your customers might appreciate knowing firsthand.

Are you live at an event that might change how business is done within your niche?

If you answered yes to any of the three questions above, you might want to consider hosting your own webinar for customers and prospects. In addition to allowing you to be on the cutting edge of news or change, a webinar allows you to interact with your customers in a brand new way that presents a more personable image.

Like a virtual conference where you’re the keynote speaker, you can establish your credibility and connect with customers and prospects from around the globe. Best of all, you won’t have to leave your office.

Hosting your own webinar doesn’t have to cost a lot unless you decide to pay for more advanced services. Those worried about the technical aspect can relax. If you have a working web cam, speakers, and a microphone, then you can easily host your own webinar.

If you already have these things, then you simply need an account at a website like Ustream or Livestream – both of which allow you to host your very own webinars live. If you’d like to do your own webinar, then there are a few simple tips to follow to ensure it’s a success.

If you’ll be treating your event more like a conference, then make sure you send out a notice about your event a few days in advance. Then, the day of the conference, send out one final reminder.

Make sure you account for time zone differences. For instance, if you live on the West Coast in the United States but the majority of your customer base is located in Japan, then you’ll want to use the time that will be best for your customers. But for those customers who can’t make the webinar, you can record it so they can still access the information later.

After you’ve chosen the best time for your event, make a few notes about what you’d like to say. Don’t write it out word for word. Just try taking down a few bullet points to help you stay on track during your presentation.

Don’t take questions until the presentation is over. Some people have complained that webinars become diluted by customer interaction and they had to leave before the presentation was completed.

Finally, before hosting your event, find a few friends and do a test run to ensure all of your technology works correctly and you can be heard and seen clearly. Now is the time to troubleshoot for annoying bugs or problems that you don’t want to discover the day of your webinar.
