Branding Yourself as an Expert in Your Niche

Regardless of what niche you’ve chosen, it’s important that you learn how to brand yourself online. Branding yourself in your niche can be as simple as creating a slogan or a tagline that allows others to easily recognize you. You want your ‘brand’ to be viewed as the top authority. You want to be the go to guru in your industry, so choose a brand wisely.

You can start by coming up with a few keywords that people already associate with your business. Look over what words are driving traffic to your site. Do visitors happen on your site after searching for words like ‘dog training’ or ‘caring for pets?’

If you don’t have sufficient website traffic to view the analytics yet, then try asking people familiar with your business what words they’d use to describe it. Once you’ve come up with words describing your online presence, look for an easy to remember tagline.

For instance, if you run a parenting website that also discusses frugal living, you could brand yourself as the frugal mom shopper. Once you’ve come up with a tagline that you like to describe yourself or your business, start sharing it with everyone.

Sign your blog posts with it. Use it on your website. Instead of having an about page, try having a page on your website ‘about the frugal mother.’ This provides you with one more way to brand yourself.

Add your slogan to your email and forum signatures. While you may have heard that no one likes a braggart, in the case of online marketing, it’s not only acceptable to brag about yourself, but it’s a way to rise to the top of your niche.

Businesses use this technique offline as well. For example, you’ve heard the phrase ‘Finger lickin’ good’ used by Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants. They wouldn’t say, ‘passably good chicken.’ Who’d want to eat there?

Brand yourself by building an audience that views you as a helpful resource and they’ll help spread the word about you, too. Word of mouth is very powerful in branding, so treat every prospect well.

If you’re pursuing article marketing, make sure that you add a short biography that mentions your slogan and your website. This biography should be the same for all of the articles so that visitors begin to recognize your name and associate you with your brand.

Brand yourself by guest authoring to an already established audience. Find a blog that’s similar to yours and offer to write a guest post. You can use one of your articles as a forum topic as well. Forums often rank high in Google because like blogs, they are continually updated. If you brand yourself as an expert, people will begin to think of you as one.

Internet Marketing for Dummies

When it comes to internet marketing there are a few well known facts that many of us seem to ignore, or overlook often to our own detriment. By implementing the basics early on and creating a solid marketing foundation, you’re chances of success increase dramatically.

A Plan:

First thing you’re going to need, even before a domain and website is a plan! You need a complete plan that includes every single aspect you can think of concerning the structure, launch, and growth of your business. Knowing where you’re heading will make it a thousand times easier to get yourself there.

Goals:

Every successful marketer, and in fact every successful entrepreneur will tell you how important goal setting, monitoring, and achievement are to the continued growth of any business or endeavor. Goals can generally be broken down into short, medium, and long term goals, but since these are YOUR goals, they can look and feel any way you choose.

I myself choose to have daily, monthly, annual, and then long term goals. This way I can see at a glance if I’m on track to achieve them, or need to invest more time or resources, or perhaps come up with a new solution all together. Remember, these documents are yours, and can be fluid and flexible in nature. The true power within them is creating and acting upon them.

A Revenue Model

Now while this might sound simple (we did call it internet marketing for dummies) enough for some reason it gets overlooked by more people than you might think. If you are looking to earn a living from the internet, you have to have some sort of product or service to sell. These products don’t even have to be your own, and including affiliate income is perhaps one of the easiest ways to get started making money online.

Traffic

We all need traffic to our websites and offers, and getting it usually amounts to good old fashioned hard work, mixed in with some high quality content. There are very few “tricks” involved here, but the effort will need to be put forth if you’re going to be profitable.

Generally speaking your traffic will come from four main sources, and you can focus your efforts on those in order to realize the best return on your investment which will usually be time.

-          Search Engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, and others)

-          Social Media (Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Etc.)

-          Social Bookmarking Sites (Stumbleupon, Digg, Delicious, and others)

-          Branding Efforts (direct, guest posting, blog commenting, forum participation, etc.)

I could go into more detail on each of these, but honesty each one could and has been the topic for an entire eBook. I’d suggest investing the time in educating yourself fully on each aspect above in order to capitalize on the vast amount of visitors that are actively seeking a product or website, just like yours!

Now while the title might be “Internet Marketing for Dummies”, truth be told, Internet marketing is for just about anyone looking to earn either a little, or a lot of money online. If you go into it with the mentality that this is a business like any other and requires more than just a website, and some luck, chances are you’ll start enjoying those payments that come in while you’re awake, asleep, or even on holidays!

Branding Your Name on the ‘Net

Branding your name (or your pen name) is very important on the Internet, no matter what niche you’re in.  You need to establish yourself as an authority in your market, because people trust authority figures.

They trust their recommendations, they trust that their products will be of good quality, and they trust that they have integrity.  It also lends credence to the buyer that you’re a real person – not just some nameless, faceless entity trying to sell them something on a static, automated website.

You should put your name on everything you create.  Whether it’s a membership site, an eBook, or something as small as a PLR article pack for sale – you should put your name on it.  Getting your name out there is so essential to your ongoing success.

Think about all of the marketing gurus you’ve heard of.  Some of them you may not have heard of yet, especially if you’re new, but chances are you’ve heard of at least a few of these.  Have you heard of John Reese, Mike Filsaime, Frank Kern, Dan Kennedy, Joe Vitale, Willie Crawford, or the late Gary Halbert?

If you’ve been in marketing long at all you’ve surely heard of at least one of these people. People know and remember the names of these people because they put their names on everything they put out.

Their names are all over the marketing forums, their eCovers, their headers, and everything else they do.  They work very hard to brand their names, because their names become the brands.  People buy their products simply because their name is on it.

Buyers think that the product must be good, because the person is so well-known.  You should do the same thing with your name.  Always use the same name on everything you do within a particular niche.

You may not want to use your real name for whatever reason, but your name needs to be a “real name.”  A nickname usually won’t cut it in most markets, but sometimes it works – like in the case of Travis “The Bum” Marketer or the “Rich Jerk.”

If you’ve signed up for forums under a nickname, ask the moderators if they can change your name to your real name or pen name.  You might not want to tell the moderator’s it’s a pen name.  That’s up to you.

Keep getting your name out there any way you can.  Host teleseminars, JV with well-known people if possible, and offer to help create content for well-known people in your niche in exchange for a Bio Box that hosts your name and link to your website.

Offer to be an interview subject for someone.  Be a “guest author” for popular websites and blogs in your niche, and create 100% original content for them. Never stop branding your name.  Even when you’re as famous as Donald Trump, the king of name branding, don’t stop.

Donald still puts his name on everything he does.  His name appears in huge, bold letters on his books.  He names buildings after himself.  Think of Trump Tower, Trump Taj Mahal, and Trump Plaza.  His name is all over everything.

Not only is it a matter of pride, but it keeps his name everywhere. You may never be as famous as the Donald, or even as famous as John Reese, but you might become known as the king or queen of your own little niche or for a particular slant that grows in popularity.

20 Tips for Branding Yourself

Whether you’re a fully established business, or a newly started online business it’s important to start branding your company right from the beginning in order to maximize the results that you and your business will start to see over time. I’m going to share some of my ideas and methods below that I use, as well as a few I’ve yet to implement.
1. Use the name you wish to brand in your domain name whenever possible, if you wish you brand yourself as an individual, don’t be afraid to register yourname.com, just be aware if you do build it up into a million dollar business and wish to sell, it will be harder to do if it’s branded to yourself.

2. Spend the money on getting yourself a decent logo; have you ever taken a look at some of the better logo’s that are around? There are some amazingly simple, yet astounding images that have been created for companies around the globe that embody the spirit and name of certain companies.

3. Create a Twitter account, and either design a custom background for it, or have one created for you, remember to incorporate your logo, or “brand” into all graphics that you put out whenever possible to achieve consistency, and promote brand awareness. Notice that my website, Twitter account, Facebook fan page, eBooks, banners, etc. are all branded to my company. This way over time people will start to associate these images with me, and my business or website.

4. Sponsor a WordPress theme, or plugin and make it available to people on the web, have you ever seen themes that included a footer that said “made possible by” or “Sponsored by”, not only is the name of the company or website on hundreds or thousands of these templates, but there is also a link back to their website which provides them with additional SEO benefit as well.

5. Build, or outsource a piece of software or productivity tool and have it branded with your company name then offer it to users. There are thousands of software sites that will carry your software and offer it to their visitors for download. Again, these software sites (which are usually very high traffic sites) will provide a link back to the website that produces the software which again will provide you with additional SEO benefits.

6. Create a signature in your email to promote your website or company. I have my name, company with a brief description as well as an invitation to follow us on Twitter. I’m not sure how many people have visited my site due to emails I’ve sent out, or how many followers I’ve gained by it, but I can tell you it’s more than if I didn’t utilize it.

7. If you’re an internet marketer you are most likely capturing email addresses and building a subscriber list in order to market to them. Rather than send out the generic text emails, try branding your emails. I’ve designed my emails to look like my website, complete with a header graphic, links and again, an invitation to follow me on Twitter. Are you starting to see a trend yet? Every form of communication media that I use is branded in such a way as to promote my companies assets.

8. Set yourself up as the expert in your field. This will keep people coming back time, and time again for your tips, and information and they will start to associate you and your brand with one of the industry leaders that they can turn to for advice on the different topics that you cover. Now being the expert in your market will require a dedicated consistency to learning as much about your topic as you possibly can, but if it’s something that you are passionate about then it shouldn’t be an issue.

9. Fill in applicable fields like your forum signature, or Skype, MSN, anything that will allow you to enter text to describe you to an audience. Don’t just limit yourself to your name (unless that is what you are branding).

10. Brand your YouTube account so that you maintain a consistent image on there also. YouTube is currently ranked the third highest traffic website on the internet, if you aren’t already on there, get over there and set up an account and make yourself available to the audience over there also. It’s all about placing yourself and your company or website in front of as many people as possible.

11. Article marketing, write articles on your topics and publish them on high traffic article directories with a resource box that points back to your website. This will also help set you up as an expert in your chosen niche.

12. Comment on related blogs, and make sure to add value to the discussion so that people will be encouraged to click through to your site, where you can then hopefully convert them into loyal readers.

13. Brand and release reports on topics in your industry, offer them for free on your website as well as availing them to other site owners to offer up to their readers. If I write a blog post about affiliate networks, and you’ve given me a report discussing the top 20 networks I’ll be more than happy to include it in my post. This gives your site a much wider reach than it might normally have because now my readers have the option of downloading and reading your branded report.

14. Take it a step further and write an eBook that solves a problem or teaches readers how to accomplish something. This will again set you up as an expert in your field, and will provide you with another branding opportunity. If you’ve downloaded my eBook E-Business; “The Insider’s Edge” you’ve noticed that the book is branded with both my header as well as links at the bottom of each page where the reader can visit my site directly. There are thousands of copies of my eBook out there promoting my business while helping people at the same time.

15. Create and brand your own products. This will provide you with more branding opportunities, and more importantly an income source for you and your site.

16. Use press releases to announce upcoming product launches, or other newsworthy events that your company experiences. This will help get your name out in front of a national audience in a very short time. It is not uncommon for thirty or forty thousand people or more to read your release in just a matter of a few days. That’s a pretty big audience by anyone’s standards.

17. Have banners created to promote your brand or website, and strategically place them on other sites in your industry. You can take part in banner exchange programs to maximize your exposure and open yourself up to new audiences and readers that frequent other blogs or websites in your niche.

18. Create an avatar to represent your brand so that when you comment or post on the internet you are again leaving behind something recognizable for people to see and associate with you and your brand.

19. Create a favicon for your website to set yourself apart from other websites. If you look through your bookmarks you’ll easily see sites that you recognize just from their favicon.

20. Brand yourself offline as well as online, have your business cards and stationary reflect the image that you are trying to build online. Make sure any collateral you send out has not only your contact information and website address, but also your logo as well.

These are just a few methods that you can use to start building brand recognition and setting yourself apart from others in your market. Building a brand is an ongoing process and will continue for as long as you own your business. Make sure you have a program in place that not only promotes your brand, but protects it also. Keep one ear to the ground so that you can deal with any issues or problems that occur as soon as they take place. There is nothing worse than stumbling over a post that slams your company because someone sent you an email addressing some issue they had with your product or service only to have it slip through the cracks and never be dealt with by you or your team.

Choosing a Domain Name

Choosing a domain

For many people starting an online business, one of the first steps taken, is to brainstorm for several hours, and research different domain name configurations that will work best for them. I’m going to share a few of the things I personally look for and point you to some resources that may help you with the task, and hopefully you’ll find yourself with a great domain that will last you many years into the future.

.Com vs. .org, etc.

When choosing a TLD (top level domain) I highly recommend a dot com over any of the other choices such as dot org, dot net, etc. Most people especially the non-technically savvy will naturally type in website.com vs. website.org I don’t know about you, but I’m not willing to loose even a small percentage of traffic to type in errors like this. Also, dot coms have a higher perceived value should the need arise and you have to sell your site or domain for one reason or another, especially if there already exists a similar domain that already has the dot com.

Eliminating imposters

Often when a website or product becomes popular other sites will spring up, hoping to capitalize on the original sites popularity. You can help avoid this by also registering the .net, and .org extensions to try and prevent this from happening and simply redirect any visitors who might type these extensions in, and point them to the dot com site.

To hyphenate or not to hyphenate, that is the question.

Not really, it’s always better not to use hyphens in my opinion, especially if your domain uses more than two words, however I have had certain sites that were better off hyphenated. For example, I owned a domain trading and selling site called domains exchanged which I’m sure you’ll agree after seeing it would perhaps been better with a hyphen www.domainsexchanged.com since most people read it domain sex changed dot com, in a case like this you may want to consider using a hyphen.

Length of your domain

A domain name can be anywhere up to 67 characters or 63 since you’ll need to count the .com as well.
I suggest you aim for a much lower number of characters whenever possible, as most people will not be able to remember such a long name, as well as they tend to look a bit spammy when you see something like this – www.clickheretomakelotsofmoneyonlinetodayforfree.com which was 48 characters (including the .com) Personally I try to keep my domains under 24 characters whenever possible, the shorter it is the easier it will be to remember if you’ve chosen correctly.

Branding and avoiding copyright issues

Whenever possible you want to start right from the beginning to set yourself apart and start to brand your website, blog, or company. PLR Internet Marketing is the name of my website and company, and I’ve worked hard to brand it into my website, eBooks, video’s, fan pages and everything else you can think of. If your site is about Facebook marketing tips, your much better off branding “Marks Marketing” over something like “Marks Facebook Marketing” simply because if you spend a year branding and building it up, spending countless hours and dollars only to have Facebook have their lawyers send you a cease and desist letter asking you to remove the “Facebook” part of your name, it’s only going to cause you grief down the road. You may get away with it for months or even years, but if they do happen to decide they don’t want you infringing on their corporate name, chances are you won’t have the resources to fight them on the issue, and you’ll lose all your hard work and effort. It’s much better to brand yourself right from the beginning, without trying to capitalize on their brand or image.

Registration costs

It’s typically around $10.00 for the year if you’re going with a dot com domain, if you read my article a couple of weeks back, you know that you can often times pick one up using a coupon for as little as .99 cents even. I’d suggest that you register your domain for as long as you plan to have the business or website. A $100.00 investment for a domain registered for the next ten years certainly isn’t a lot, and it can even help you with Search engines as they will often times look to see how long a domain is registered for. A site registered for 1 year may be taken less seriously than a site registered for five, or ten. I mean after all, if you don’t feel confident registering for more than a year, why should anyone else expect you to be around longer than that?

Also registering your site for five, or ten years will help you to feel like your building something of substance that will be around for years to come, and not just a fly by night site that will be here for a year, and then either picked up for another, or if it isn’t doing so well let slip away. Hopefully it’s your intention to continue to build and improve your site for the long term.

All the Good ones are taken

Not true, but it definitely is harder than it used to be finding a suitable domain name to represent your new site. Here are a few sites that may help you with your search.

www.bustaname.com/ is a site that takes your keywords that you’ve input, and tells you if any of the possible configurations are available to register. You can set it to only look at possible 2 word dot coms for example, and after typing in your preferred set of keywords that you’d like to see in your domain, it will let you know which ones are available as well as which registrars are offering the best price at the moment. It will also give you similar word suggestions that you may not have already thought of. It’s a great resource, and best of all, it’s free!

Buying a premium domain that has already been registered is another choice if you have the funds for it. Companies like www.buydomains.com/ buy thousands of unregistered or dropped domains on a daily basis with the sole intention of selling them at a profit. Remember often times the amount listed can often be lowered, so don’t be intimidated if your domain of choice happens to be listed at $2000.00 try offering them $1000.00 and see what happens.

Whatever domain you finally end up with, I’d suggest you treat this step as an important one, after all this is something you’ll be investing a lot of time, and effort into most likely over the coming months or years, and it’s kind of like a tattoo, it’s pretty much permanent… or at least very hard, and painful to change.

Before learning how to brand yourself (or your company), you have to know what branding is. Most people think branding is the name of the company. This is only part of branding. There is much more to it than that. And just as your name is your identity but not who you are, a company’s name is only part of their brand. Branding is actually establishing the personality of your company. If you look closely at any type of brand marketing, whether online or off, you’ll notice that every company has their own unique personality. They want to be known as something specific. Branding your e-business means that you have to establish your own unique personality among the countless numbers of internet marketing and affiliate marketing companies. How do you do this?

Branding isn’t easy. It takes time and effort to brand yourself. All major companies had to work their way to the point where they were successfully branded. It might have taken years. Therefore, before beginning to brand, you should have a realistic view of how long it will take to brand your company. Then you can begin brand marketing to establish your company’s presence and personality. Think about what sort of message you want to send to your customers. What do you want to be known for? Don’t generalize your answer by saying you just want to be the best or most successful. You have to make yourself unique.

Your next question is likely “How do I make myself unique?” The straightforward answer is to offer something competition doesn’t. But this can be very difficult to do, especially if you’re just starting out. Do a bit of investigating. Look around at the e-business world. Dig into the companies that are in your niche. What are they offering? What makes customers flock to them? Where are they successful? Where are they failing? After finding the answers to these questions, answer them for your own business. What do you have to offer people? What is going to make customers come to you? Can you offer things your competition doesn’t offer?

One important trick in brand marketing is to give away things for free. It might make you cringe, but in reality, free information or products is actually the best method of brand marketing. A lot of websites will offer you a free e-book for signing up on their mailing list or to their newsletter. This is a great way to brand yourself. It gives people a chance to see how much you know about your niche. It lets them judge for themselves whether they’ll be with you for a short while or the long haul.

PLR (private label rights) products also help to brand your company. There are several levels of PLR, but the important thing about it is you own the rights to the information. So even if you allow other people to sell it as products on their own websites, the information on the inside is still yours. This is a great way to increase customers. The wider you cast your net, the more fish you’ll catch.
