Defining What It Means to Be an Internet Marketer

internet marketer

There’s no PhD you can strive for to be in the Internet marketing industry. You have to learn as you go – on your own – soaking up information along the way.  The first thing you need to know is what it means to be an Internet marketer, because it isn’t always clear to everyone.

Let’s start with what Internet marketing is not.  It’s not being a con artist. It’s not being a spam king.  It doesn’t just mean selling on eBay or having your own website and products.

In reality, Internet marketers can pick and choose from a whole host of options available to help them make money.  Your opportunities are virtually endless, and include one or more of the following:

  • Selling digital downloads (information products like eBooks)
  • Promoting other people’s products for a commission (affiliate marketing)
  • Selling on eBay or other auction sites
  • Running a membership site
  • Selling your online services (writing, graphics, etc.)
  • Owning a website that sells dropshipped or wholesale items

And this is just the tip of the iceberg.  Being a newcomer to Internet marketing, you might be worried that you don’t have anything to sell.  That’s okay – most people don’t start out with anything, and you never have t stock a tangible inventory if you don’t want to.

Internet marketing creates no gender or age boundaries for you.  There are teenagers who have launched multi-million dollar companies as budding Internet marketers whose ideas sprung to life and catapulted them to instant success.

You don’t have to do anything unethical or shady to succeed at Internet marketing, and in fact, launching a respectable business with a solid reputation is the secret ingredient that will allow you to hatch an empire on the ‘net to fulfill all of your dreams and those of your family.

Affiliate Marketing – An Easy Way to Success

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is when you sign up to promote other people’s products (or services) for a share of the sale in the form of commissions.  As an affiliate marketer, you usually don’t need any special training or start-up funding.

Your tasks as an affiliate marketer will be to drum up traffic to the product owner’s pitch page, allowing them to convert the prospect into a buyer.  The more targeted you are with your traffic promotions, the higher your conversion rate will be.

There are many things you can promote as an affiliate. On Amazon, for instance, you can promote anything tangible (and a few digital download to boot).  If you want to be in the paintball niche, you can include links using your Amazon associate (affiliate) ID to sell specific paintball guns, paintballs, and attire.

You can go to sites like ClickBank or PayDotCom and get a unique affiliate ID to promote an endless supply of information products.  They house everything from acne to organic gardening.

You can even become an affiliate promoting actions.  There are many Internet marketers who focus their business on getting a steady stream of traffic to take an action, such as filling out a survey online.

With affiliate marketing, you don’t have to worry about developing ideas and creating products.  You don’t have to deal with customer service follow-ups or continually process more products for the marketplace.

Your job is often made easier by product owners who care so much about their own success, that they provide a toolbox to help you with yours!  The toolbox usually includes readymade emails, web reviews, and banner ads you can use with your own link embedded in them for instant plug-n-play success.

Most Internet marketers will eventually blur the lines of product owner and affiliate marketer.  Product owners continually use their list of buyers to promote affiliate items, and affiliates often build such a good reputation in a niche that they’re urged to come out with a product of their own.

How much can an affiliate marketer earn? There are no limits. You can market multiple niches and work as much or as little as you want to generate targeted traffic through your links.  Super affiliates earn six figures or more, but even a beginner affiliate can earn enough to pay the bills each month – with some change to spare!

Cloaking Your Links to Protect Your Commission

Links

Link cloaking is a very important part of affiliate marketing.  In a nutshell, link cloaking is a way to protect your affiliate commissions from being stolen.  It’s not totally foolproof.  Smart individuals who are well-educated about the matter can still figure out how to keep you from getting your commission.

Most people won’t go that far, so cloaking your links will prevent most commission loss. How do people steal affiliate commissions?  Have you ever hovered over a link and noticed that the link was an obvious affiliate link?

Some people type in the parent domain instead of clicking the link as a way of making sure the owner of the site gets paid 100% for the sale.  Some people falsely believe that if they buy from an affiliate link, they’ll have to pay more for a commission mark-up.

Some people actually do it for a different reason.  If you’re promoting a ClickBank product, especially to other marketers, many of them know they can insert their own ClickBank ID and get what’s usually a 50% or more discount on the product.

This is a different type of affiliate commission theft, because the person doing it gets the affiliate commission themselves, rather than just making sure you don’t get it.  Most people don’t do that, of course.

Most people are pretty honest, and don’t mind giving you a little affiliate commission in exchange for recommending a good product to them.  But it’s enough of a concern that you should take steps to prevent it.

You can easily set up your own link cloaking system.  What you would do is set up a directory on one of your domains.  Most marketers use the domain of their own name, as in bobsmith.com.  They typically have a subdirectory called /recommends/.

Then in that directory, they create a new subdirectory for each product.  It would look something like this: http://www.bobsmith.com/recommends/awesomeproductname. In that directory, they place a very simple PHP redirect called index.php.

Whenever they send someone to the above link, the script will redirect to your affiliate link.  All you have to do is create a file in Notepad or your favorite HTML editor and name is index.php.  Then paste the following information into the file and upload it to your directory:

< ?php
header(“location:http://affiliates.programhere.com/5555″);
?>

There are a number of link cloaking scripts available.  Most of them are relatively easy to install and use.  There’s a big benefit to using a script rather than doing it yourself.  Using your simple redirect, there isn’t an easy way to check how much traffic you’ve sent to your link.

Most link cloaking scripts allow you to add new links very easily within an administrative area, and then each link is tracked so that you can see how much traffic is going through the link.  If you use your own file, the only way to tell how much traffic you’ve sent is through your affiliate stats, which may be inaccurate, or through your web server’s stats, which may be clunky to use or hard to understand.

Another way you can do it is to use a link cloaking tool, such as Go Try This.  This lets you enter the raw affiliate link and name your link whatever you want as an extension of your domain. Then you can log in and check stats to see how the top 10 links are performing using a diagram and bar graph.

Success Series Goal – Product Reviews

product reviews

A large portion of a bloggers income comes in via affiliate products that he either reviews directly or discusses in a blog post indirectly. For example if I’m writing about how to back up your website using your Hostgator CPanel admin area, it’s only natural to include a link to Hostgator, and since I’ve been using them for years and have no problem recommending them as my number one choice for hosting including an affiliate link is a no brainer.

One area that I see myself as being weak in is the fact that I’ve spent very little time over the last year promoting affiliate products and instead focused only on serving up informative articles. I need to strike a healthy balance between the two, because while my readers come by for the content, I’m sure they understand my need to earn a living as well, and by telling them about the products and services that I’ve personally tried, or am using can help them decide whether or not they want to invest in that product/service.

I think for every seven articles that I write on blogging, affiliate marketing, internet marketing, social media, and such I can include one that talks about one of the tools I use with my own business, and include an affiliate link without offending any of my readers. The problem is I haven’t been and my revenues reflect that.

A large part of my time is spent reviewing my competitors’ products, and learning what I want to incorporate into my business, and what I’d like to avoid at all costs. An honest review of a product could help someone who has an interest in it to make the final decision to either a. purchase it or b. pass it over and keep looking for something that will better suit there needs.

Since I’m now in my second year, and this is my “growth” year, I need to focus a little more time and effort on sharing my opinions on a larger number of online products. Ultimately I’d like to have 50 – 100 product reviews completed over the course of the next 12 – 24 months. I think the added income will go a long way toward allowing me to not only reinvest my earning back into my business, but also start pulling a wage from it as well.

Up until this point I’ve used my earnings to build a foundation for my business so that I have a solid position with which to start launching products, services, reviews and such, and I knew going in that I wanted to build something solid and of substance that would continue to grow for many years to come.

Success Series Goal – Affiliate Tracking System

Affiliate Tracking

Today I’m going to tell you about number ten on my list of success ingredients that I’ve set out as being an important part in the success of my blog and business.

Affiliate tracking software allows you to maintain an accurate tracking system that allows you to upload banners and other collateral as well as set tracking links for each affiliate who signs up. This tracking system allows you to keep track of who is selling what product for you, and just how much traffic they are sending your way.

You can offer performance bonuses, implement fraud control, track offline marketing efforts, and run all sorts of reports that tell you why, how and where traffic is coming from as well as commission payouts and much, much more!

You can upload materials to make your affiliates job much easier, and allow them to make more sales which will result in more sales for you, and more importantly more sales for your affiliates who will then be inclined to work even harder for you.

Some of the items you might want to upload and make available to your affiliates are:

-          Banners (I’d go with the five most popular sizes and shapes)

-          Email templates

-          Blog posts

-          Page peels

-          Light boxes

-          Text links

-          Text ads

-          Keyword lists to use to promote the product/service

-          PDF documents

-          Video’s

Most of you are probably familiar with the ClickBank tracking system which takes care of everything for you, but gives you no control over the affiliates themselves and gives you very little freedom. Unlike ClickBank you control all aspects of your affiliate network when you use a software solution and the flexibility you have will more than make up for any additional costs you incur.

For myself I’m getting ready to launch a product/service with a partner and we’ve decided to capitalize on the power of affiliates as a way of getting more exposure than we’d get using only our own resources.

Your online education and skillsets

e-learning

Deciding to pursue an internet marketing lifestyle is a choice that comes easier for some than others, but regardless of the aptitude you have for your chosen career direction it’s important that you keep up with not only the changing technologies and algorithms, but also the emerging ones as well.

It’s important to devote a portion of your online time to furthering your internet marketing education, and since that can encompass so many different facets of the world wide web, it might be a good idea to list out the different ways you intend to work your online business, and which ways you intend to earn your living from it.

Each of us has our own skills and strengths that we’ve brought in from our previous careers or job experiences and there is no sense in letting those skills go to waste. Take the one’s that can be adapted into your new business plan and develop them further, and figure out which skills are going to suit your new business needs to fullest advantage and start developing them.

The best place to learn is from those who are already there, in the trenches so to speak. The longer someone has been earning a living online, the more tricks he’s likely to have picked up along the way. Once you’ve decided which skills you’d like to develop find a marketer who possesses them, and see if he’s put out a book, or video course.

Each person has his or her own strengths and weaknesses when it comes to doing business online, and the best part about it all is that you get to pick and choose what you’d like to learn from each. If marketer A is and expert copywriter and that is something you feel you’d like to add into your business skillset mix, then read everything you can off of their blog, download and read their e-book, and if you’re lucky and they’ve spent the time putting together a comprehensive video training course you just might want to pick up a copy to study over.

Internet Marketing is one industry where you might want to aim at being a “jack of all trades” so to speak. I’ve seen amazing writers that have only a handful of people reading their amazing content simply because they hadn’t bothered to develop their SEO and marketing skills to an adequate level.

On the flip side there are SEO experts who get a million visits but because they don’t invest the time in creating content that will keep those visitors on their site they end up with no sales, and high bounce rates simply because they didn’t develop a consistent content creation strategy.

There is more (much, much more) to internet marketing than simply slapping a website up on your hosting account and hoping people will not only find you, but once found, stick around to learn about you, and return enough times to learn to trust you enough to hopefully make a purchase.

Take a look at the following list of skills and decide which you already have, and which you’d like to either learn or develop further and then go from there to find a suitable source to learn from.

-          Internet Marketing

-          SEO – Search Engine Optimization

-          CPA (cost per action)

-          Product development

-          Product Launches

-          Podcasting

-          Video Marketing (including creation)

-          Computer Software Skills

This list is by no means exhaustive, but it gives you an idea of the depth and breadth of the skills that are not only going to come in handy, but become a part of your daily routine. Depending on the exact niche you’ve decided on and the tools or team you have at your disposal you may have less, or even more skills you need to master and learn.

Remember even if you outsource a portion of your business you are going to want to have an understanding of what’s involved so that you can make sure you are getting the best return on your outsource dollars. It can mean the difference between paying $100.00 dollars for a service, and paying $5.00 dollars.

Elite Internet Marketing Forum

Internet Marketing Community and Forum

As many of you know I’m currently in the process of integrating an internet marketing community into the website in order to offer you all a place to go where you can build relationships, offer advice, ask questions and so much more that will help you with your marketing goals.

There are both a free section that contains the main internet marketing forum as well as the lounge where you can hang out and discuss just about anything that strikes your fancy, as well as the Elite Membership sections where the more serious marketers gather to discuss some of the more advanced topics, as well as discuss joint venture possibilities etc.

I’ve made the paid section affordable to all at $6.00 per month, or $49.00 per year, however I realize that many of you starting off in the make money online industry may be doing so out of the need to try and earn more money and as such maybe can’t afford even that amount. So rather than leave anyone behind, I’ve structured a way that you can get your membership for zero. To learn more, read the section at the bottom of this page!

Some reasons why you should join an online internet marketing community:

-          Relationships – Forums are a great way to meet other marketers, and small business owners who are interested in many of the very same topics as you are interested in. Each one of us also bringing a different set of skills and knowledge to the discussion. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a question that I was unable to find the answer to online, only to have another member who happened to be an expert in that exact field come up with the answer for me. Over time these relationships will benefit everyone, because you’ll develop a trust that is so important when developing both personal and business relationships with.

-          Personal and Professional Branding – Participating in an online community like this one allows you to showcase your skills and offers you a place to represent your brand. By placing a link, or banner to your website in your signature at the bottom of each of your posts you’ll also experience a great form of free advertising and traffic generation as well as numerous back links pointing to your website.

-          Education – I have met some of the most talented individuals who are not only capable, but generous with their time and knowledge and willing to share that knowledge in order to help out both new comers, and advanced internet marketers alike.  I have found that when two people belong to the same community there is almost a sense of brotherhood (or sisterhood) and as such a desire for each other to succeed rather than a competitiveness that is found most other places online and off.

-          A chance to showcase your skills and help others – While there will be times when you go in search of answers there will be just as many times that you are in a position to help the other members with something you happen to be knowledgeable about. Also if you happen to be a social media guru, and are always offering insight into those topics, chances are if you have a related website people will be extremely likely to click through and see what you have to offer over there.

-          Find reputable Services and Freelancers for sale – Since a members reputation can be discerned through a few things like reputation, ITrader, length of membership and feedback from other members, you are often much more secure when doing business online with these members. One of the things I hate most about online transactions is doing business with people I don’t know at all; this eliminates that to some degree.

These are just a few reasons it is beneficial to join an online forum, or community and there are so many others that I’m sure you’ll come to see once you join and start interacting regularly.

Some topics currently being discussed inside:

-          Main Internet Marketing Forum for general discussions

As you can see if you are an internet marketer, or blogger then there is definitely going to be tons of information for you and tons of opportunity for you to grow your business as well.

I’ve tried to make the forum accessible to absolutely everyone, and that includes individuals who are still striving to earn a living online. I have implemented a system where you can earn credits within the forum by simply making the same posts you’d normally make anyway, as well as referring new members which will in turn benefit everyone. Here is how the credit system works. Keep in mind the system is new and as such evolving, and I’m going to be adding more rewards as well as allowing members to offer their own as well in exchange for credits.

Earning Credits:
-
Making posts. (100 word minimum)     = 1 credit
- Referring new members                            = 1 credit
- Listing the person who referred you    = 1 credit
- Donations to each other                            = Up to the individual
- Gifts from admins and mods                    = up to the individual
- More coming

Spending Credits:
- 1 Month Membership                                   = 20 credits (or 20 posts)
- 1 Year membership                                      = 200 credits
- Banner advertising                                       = $1.00 = 3 credits (See advertising page for rates)
- Training courses                                             = $1.00 = 3 credits (If course is $47.00 then 141 credits)
- E-Books                                                             As above
- More coming soon!

So how do I get started?

1.       Visit www.plrinternetmarketing.com/forum/register.php or use the members tab at the top of this page and register today for free!

Members Area Integration

members area

Someone recently asked me what my business model was, and I told him, “I’d like to be a successful well known internet marketer who makes a good living while helping others do the same thing.” Now a big part of how I help people is by providing articles that keep them informed, and motivated, as well as up to date on the different methods of internet marketing that I’m using or reading about.

Since this is what I do full time, I have a fair bit of knowledge to share, and since I’m researching these different topics I might as well take the extra time to type it up and pass it along. You never know what piece of information might contribute to someone else’s success!

I knew in the beginning that I’d like an area where internet marketers, social media enthusiasts, affiliate marketers, and all the other likeminded individuals I run into on a daily basis could go, and share ideas, or just do some research. There are online forums, but they can be a bit overwhelming at times, and if you don’t know your way around they can seem a bit “cliquey” and hard for newbies and experts alike to share some “virtual space” and hopefully some great ideas.

I’m currently in the process of building a members section, where you can register, upload your favourite profile picture, tell us as little or as much about yourself as you feel comfortable with and interact with entrepreneurs just like yourself. Building a business is never done alone.

Some of the topics covered will be:

-          Internet marketing

-          Affiliate Marketing

-          Copywriting

-          Article Marketing

-          CPA (Cost per Action)

-          CPS (Cost per Sale)

-          SEO

-          Site Reviews

-          Graphic Design

-          Product Creation

-          List Building

-          Email Marketing

-          Tutorials

-          Member Downloads

-          Buy Sell Trade Section

-          Hire a Freelancer Section

-          Lounge

To access the member’s area, simply click the “members” tab in the navigation bar at the top of our page, to return to the website click the “website” tab and you’ll be brought back. Eventually the navigation system will be fully integrated (as soon as we can get WordPress and Vbulletin to play nicely together).  We will be adding and tweaking the features over the coming months, and adding content to the various forums.

The construction process will likely last a week or two barring no unforeseen coding disasters, so I’d ask that you please bear with me while I make the changes. I will try and make them as seamless as possible, and will be doing most of the work between midnight and six so as to not interrupt everyone. Please let me know if there is a feature you’d like to see added, or if there is something broken you don’t think I’ve noticed yet so I can get it fixed up right away.

Getting Paid

Affiliate marketing is still one of the most lucrative ways to make money online, and many internet marketers have more campaigns than they can keep track of. Now as someone who signs up and promotes my fair share of offers, I can tell you that there are two sides to that coin, and both aren’t positive.

On the one hand, I’m always being surprised by payments into my PayPal Account from places I signed up with, promoted, and then forgot about because they just didn’t seem to convert for me, or I just had too much to think about at the time. Found money is pretty cool, and is always a nice unexpected surprise to wake up to.

Now on the other hand there are times when the affiliate program has money you’ve earned through referrals, and decides to shut down or sell their program without first paying out their affiliates. When this happens it can be difficult to prove that they did indeed owe you anything at all. There are a few things you can do to keep track of the various places you are accumulating money online, and protect yourself should the worst happen.

First and foremost you should keep track of all the affiliate programs you join and promote in an excel file that contains at minimum the affiliate company, products your promoting, and sales you’ve made with them. It might seem like a lot of trouble when you consider the number of companies you may have signed up with, but since this is your money on the table, and it might mean the difference between getting paid, and not, I’d recommend you at least try and keep track of it.

Another thing you can do that will help out is take a screenshot of your affiliate panel showing the earnings from time to time, and just store them on your computer. Should the need ever arise where someone is asking for proof of earnings on an affiliate program that they have discontinued or abandoned for some reason.

You might want to implement some sort of affiliate tracking system directly on your blog or website as well that tracks the clicks of your visitors; I personally use MaxblogPress Ninja Affiliate, and have always been happy with it.

Monitoring and tracking the performance of your affiliate campaigns is just part of the business, and at the end of the year it can mean a huge difference in your profitability.

10 Things to Help YOU succeed in Business

Ten things to help you succeed in business

Launching an online business is exciting, and filled with hope, and opportunities, but it does also have a certain amount of unique challenges that go along with it. Here are some things I feel will benefit you and your online business, and come from my personal experience in internet marketing.

1.       Quality content vs. going for simple quantity. Too many people are publishing volume articles of low quality in the hopes that if they saturate the internet with it, they’ll end up with more sales and leads. This can be a great thing for you, because by spending the time to produce high quality pieces both for blog posts, and in the internet marketing products you create you will stand out from the masses who are focusing on just getting something out regardless of what it is.

2.       ABC Always be creating content (Thank you Darren Monroe for one of many great tips!) It’s important to be devoting time each and every day toward furthering your online business, and part of that is the production of content, both free in the form of articles, training video’s, guest posts, etc. as well as in content that you can put towards products you intend to sell, after all if you don’t have anything for sale, then even if you do get thousands of visitors a day, you’ll never truly reach your income potential, and be left wondering just what happened.

3.       Building your network is something you should always be working on, respond to your comments personally, spend some time retweeting those in your Twitter circle, answer the questions that are posed to you in emails. By working on your network of contacts in a personal manner, you’ll be building valuable relationships that will go a long way toward building your business at the same time.

4.       I talk a lot about the importance of setting goals, and making a plan to reach those goals. After all if you don’t know where you are heading, or just how you intend to get there, your chances of ever arriving, are extremely limited to say the least. Make sure you set goals regularly, have a daily “to do” list, also make sure you have monthly, 3 month, 6 month, and 12 month goals, and that they all line up with each other. For example if you’d like to have 10,000 RSS subscribers at the end of the year, make sure you have a plan in place, and are working toward it with your shorter term goals.

5.       Don’t be an island. What I mean by that is don’t try and go it alone, there are so many talented individuals who have already been where you are now, and even more that are heading to the same place you are. Network with them, and share ideas with them, we can all learn from each other, and I guarantee you we have a much greater knowledge collectively than we do individually. Reach out and introduce yourself to types of people, those you can help, and those who can help you.  Don’t be discouraged that not everyone wants to connect, some individuals won’t want your help, and others are only in it for themselves.

6.       Always be educating yourself on the different aspects that are relevant to your online business. There are so many different areas to work on that it is a lifelong process, and if you develop the habit of learning, reading, watching training video’s, etc. on these areas, you’ll find yourself becoming a much better internet marketer because of it. Here are just a handful of areas you could be focusing your online education on:

-          Marketing

-          Internet Marketing

-          Affiliate Marketing

-          Search Engine Optimization

-          Traffic generation techniques

-          Keyword research

-          Analytics

-          Social Media Strategies

-          Writing

-          Copywriting

-          Web design

-          Graphic design

-          List building

-          Relationship building

-          Sales funnels

-          Outsourcing

-          Consulting

There are probably hundreds more that could be added to this list quite easily, but you get the picture. Developing your online education should be something you focus on early, and continue doing for life, it isn’t something you can just blitz through in 12 weeks, and be done with. Our business is constantly changing and evolving, in order to stay on top, we need to evolve with it.

7.       Just like education should be started from the very beginning, and continue throughout your online career, so should your list building efforts. Time and time again, you’ve heard “The money is in the list” yet so many of you haven’t started a list building campaign, and when I ask you about it, the answer is generally that you don’t want to commit to the $20 a month fee that comes with an email solution such as Aweber. Leaving hundreds or thousands of dollars on the table because you aren’t willing to invest the price of a few drinks each month is not a reason, but an excuse. Start building your list now. Here is a coupon so you can get your first month for just a dollar, take advantage of it.

8.       Track your results. You should always be tracking and testing the different campaigns you have running to see where the results are stemming from. If you are driving traffic to an offer from 12 different sources, but 2 or 3 are resulting in 80% of the traffic you should be focusing your time and energy on those few areas. By logging the results you are experiencing from different aspects of your business, you will also have a handy reference guide next time you decide to launch a product, need to set up a new SEO campaign, or perhaps use some similar type keywords that you’ve used in the past.

9.       Focus! This might sound like a lesser important piece of this list, but it is actually one of the most important ones. There is something that is quite real in our line of work, and it is called “information overload”, and it can not only get in your way, but block it entirely if you aren’t careful. Spend the time researching the areas that you feel are important to your business, and then work those aspects until you’ve succeeded with them. Too many people in internet marketing bounce from one idea to the next looking for that get rich quick method that will provide them with an easy living with next to no work involved. Rather than waste your time, listen to my advice, and spend the time doing the work now so that you can enjoy the benefits of a business that is well built and providing you and your family with an income.

10.   Last but not least, don’t give up, don’t ever give up! If something isn’t working, reevaluate, reeducate, and figure out why. Maybe ask someone who has already been there before you for some advice, then choose to listen to it, or seek out more advice, but don’t give up. This business is no harder, nor easier than any other business out there. It is possible as you can see by all the people who have already succeed before you. If they can do it, so can you. Failure is not an option!

If internet marketing is something you are truly passionate about, then the only thing standing between you and success are time, commitment, education, and application. If you believe that you can, then you will, it’s only a matter of time! See you there!
