SEO – SEO 101

search engine rankings for keywordsSearch engine optimization, otherwise commonly referred to SEO, is a way to make web content appear as high as possible in search engine rankings.  Here, we’ll discuss a number of ways you can use this valuable tool to your advantage for your website. Using text on your website and on titles and things of this nature will be used to create placement on web pages.  Keywords repeated throughout a page will bring it up towards the top based on the phrase a search engine user types into the search box.  You will want to use a keyword phrase in your title tag, the website URL, and about a 4-6% keyword phrase density in your overall page text.  Additional locations that these keyword phrases are important include within inbound links, within headings, in the beginning of a document, in alternative text tags, and in metatags.

There are a lot of linking things that are directly related to the amount of search engine optimization that your website has.  Those can be inbound, outbound, or internal links. Links from sites similar to yours, from .gov or .edu websites, high numbers of backlinks, internal links’ anchor text, quality and longstanding inbound links, and links from quality directories are all good for your website’s SEO.

Description metatags, language metatags, and keywords metatags are also important in your search engine rankings, but your content quality is key!  Unique content is critical, as is frequently updated website pages.  When using a key phrase in a larger font or a font that has been accentuated by italics or bold text, it is helpful as well for your site’s SEO. Also keeping your pages short makes them better for search engine rankings.

File names and key phrases in your URL are important for SEO.  You want to also make sure your site works.  It seems pretty simple, but websites with broken links, password protected pages, and other malfunctions which prevent users from finding what they need do nothing but guarantee some people won’t ever want to waste 10 seconds of their life again looking at that page. Site maps, large sites, well-mapped sites, quality site themes, and older sites are all well respected by the rankings of the popular search engines.  Spending a little time on optimizing your website may take some work, but if done correctly, will be well worth it in the end when the visitors and users you’ve been seeking are looking at your well crafted website.
