Why Twitter Matters for Marketing (and How to Do it Right)

twitter marketingIt seems like everyone is talking about Twitter. It wasn’t that long ago that no one had heard of it, and then the end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009 it became something that everyone talked about all the time. Words like “Retweet”, “DM”, and “hashtags” weren’t part of our lexicon before. And now they are.

Twitter skeptics wonder: “Why would anyone care that I’m stopping for coffee?” But Twitter evangelists know that it’s not about the coffee you’re getting. It’s about far more. Twitter is a lifestyle tool that keeps you connected with your followers. It’s a way to build a relationship by engaging people who want to be engaged. For that reason, Twitter is a marketing tool. Here are 5 tips to help you use Twitter effectively in your marketing:

  1. Twitter is a relationship tool first and a marketing tool second: Twitter is a place to be real, to have a personality, to share, to interact. Those are the foundations of a relationship. When you give, people will listen to what you have to say. Any salesperson will tell you that a sale is only made after you’ve built a relationship. For this reason, you should be tweeting about yourself with a ratio of 10:1. That is, tweet 10 things that build your relationships and once about yourself.

  1. Twitter is a marketing tool, not a sales tool: Twitter is a way to talk to people and to build attention about your business. It is not a place to sell. The difference: enticing people with benefits to click to your site (marketing) or asking them to buy from you (sales). When you tweet, share things of value – which is a marketing technique – and don’t tell people to “click here to buy”.

  1. Retweet often: If you’re not sure what to tweet about, retweet something that someone else has written. For example, if you’re following the 10:1 ratio that I mentioned above, make retweeting 1-3 of the 10 tweets.

  1. Share links: Share links that are valuable to your followers. Maybe an interesting article, maybe a useful tool. There is some debate about whether or not these should be affiliate links but I think it’s okay as long as you truly have the best interests of your followers in mind.

  1. Use hashtags for context: Hashtags are words that follow a “#” sign and they help people understand what your tweet is about. So if you write: Here is a great link! http://plrinternetmarketing #internetmarketing then people will know what your link is about. I recommend using hashtags as useful ways to embed SEO into your tweets (because individual tweets are indexed by search engines).

The most important thing you can do on Twitter is engage people. Talk about them, listen to them, ask them about their problems, and solve them. Just like in a regular conversation, avoid talking too much about yourself and spend more time listening to others.

Twitter success isn’t a secret recipe! It’s done by building relationships and solving problems.

      Thanks Greg!

Yeah, Klout is a great new addition to our “Twitter Tools”. They sent me movie premier tickets last week for “The Change Up” which was cool.

Have a good one, I’m off to the gym!

Thanks for a very good article. Twitter is a great tool for properly promoting your business, but it is often misused to great extents. I think, you summed up the golden rules to be followed, when using Twitter for marketing purposes.
