Geolocation and Social Marketing Apps: Issues for Business

Geolocation

Geolocation is booming because of the increased, and definite future increase of smartphone use. There are many applications that are adding GL (geolocation) features. These are being increasingly used by marketers to get their message across to users in specific locations, or the more obsessive Search Engine Optimization individuals to let others know where they are.

  • So what is it? GL allows the identification of a user’s real world location through identification of where their smartphone handset is. This could mean a pretty precise longitude and latitude of the user’s location. This is done with the application understanding where the user is, in relation to, normally three, mobile network base stations. Essentially it is linking the real and digital worlds together.

  • So how is it used? There are a variety of applications that work in their own ways, but mostly it is the same. FourSquare is an excellent example of a social networking GL mobile tool with rapid user uptake in recent times. You could think of it as the next Twitter, allowing shout-outs to others from a real location, among a range of other services. For those wanting to market with FourSquare, a user who comes close (in a physical sense) to your store or business, will be alerted to what you have on offer. Also, they could be searching for deals in that particular area before they go. There have been some amazing results with these kinds of applications. MacDonalds in Australia has used this to huge success for a very limited amount of investment.

  • Real world interaction on social media. There are those who are obsessed with social media and want to take it to the next level. Starbucks has an application for the iPhone called myStarbucks. This enables users to shout-out when they are at Starbucks having a coffee. This could be a way to meet people you don’t really know and a way to get others you know to come by. You should be careful because all of your friends might turn up.

  • Dangers. There are already enough dangers involved with online communication, especially with Twitter and Facebook. Now your real location will be broadcast to a large number of people. You might want to think twice about this. You might be giving burglars a great way to know exactly where you are and what you are doing.

Whether you are a small business in a large city, or you have many stores all over the world, geolocation is still applicable to your marketing efforts. You should speak to those in SEO, who will also know which applications are best suited to your business. They will have the experience, market knowledge and be able to track and analyse your investment.

    Hey,

You know, that is why I love reading your blog, you always know whats the latest happening all around!

I knew it is being used for SEO, like I had personally used wikimapia.org and google maps for SEO of one of my websites and it had worked wonderfully well for the website!

But I didnt know about the Starbucks application, Its actually cool !

    Thanks bro

  2. I am not in for the activation of geolocation apps in my smartphone. I don’t see it as a great achievement but only as an intrusion to privacy.

    • It is a bit of a double edged sword, on the one hand it makes apps smarter, and can point us to the closest “whatever” but you just know the info also helps dial in their marketing campaigns as well. (Though this isn’t always a bad thing)

When Google sees me searching for something they have a habit of showing those ads for several weeks. (wish I could let them know I bought it the first day, or was only doing research! LOL)

Have a good one, and thanks for stopping by!
