Become An Expert Contributor

Expert ContributorThere are hundreds of large media sites on the internet that are desperate for people to write about their area of expertise. These sites rely on constantly updated information and as such Google views them as big authority sites on a huge range of subjects.

One example is About.com and another is eHow.com. Both these sites rely on contributors to feed their website with new information every single day. The best part is that they accept anyone who can demonstrate they are an expert as writers. Once you are accepted you will be able to put your resource box at the bottom of every article that you contribute, or your link will be placed on the author profile page.

Think about how many hundreds of thousands of visitors a site like about.com gets a day, that’s a lot of traffic you can leverage just from writing some content.

With most of these sites you are expected to contribute the information for free, because of your love for your topic, but the reason most people do it is because of the exposure it gives them and their website. Imagine being able to tell people in the forums and on your websites that you are an expert contributor for some of the largest sites in the world.

Even if you can’t find a large media site in your niche that accepts contributors or you are having difficulty getting accepted as a writer for one of the larger sites, you can always look to do guest blogging.

Guest blogging, like being a contributor, involves writing highly informative articles for different blogs in your niche. It’s a win-win situation all round because the blog owner gets a great article and doesn’t have to spend much time thinking about what to write and you get to leverage the traffic that the blog owner has spent time and effort building up.

The other great benefit of guest blogging is that you get to put your link on a large number of related sites. Google sees all these closely related sites ‘voting’ for your site and assume that your site is the authority within that niche, which gives it a much higher ranking in the search engines.

The final way you can become a contributor is with Wikipedia. This can be slightly difficult but it involves writing a highly researched article with facts and figures and then finding related pages on Wikipedia. You can then edit the Wikipedia page and cite your website as the reference. You don’t get much SEO benefit but you do get free exposure and people clicking on your citation link.

You should be very careful about putting your links on Wikipedia and think very carefully about whether you are actually contributing or just spamming.

This article should have been titled “WHY to become a contributor” because it doesn’t tell anyone how to become one. It simply gives the benefits of becoming a contributor.

  2. Warren says:

I’m sorry Cathleen, but “Why to become a contributor” doesn’t even make sense to me. I think I’ll keep it the way it is.

  3. munir says:

I would have to agree with Cathleen 100%. Though this does give us some good information on why becoming a contributor is good, it’s missing the key point which is how to become one. In order for the title to make sense you would need to say “in order to become a contributor to about.com & ehow.com you must do this… this.. and this…”

I will now go find a blog that understands the difference between “how” and “why”

You really make it appear really easy along with your presentation however I find this matter to be actually one thing which I believe I would never understand. It kind of feels too complex and extremely huge for me. I am taking a look ahead for your next post, I’ll try to get the grasp of it!
