Default Okay, PC problem was resolved!

Hi guys,

I posted this over at the WF because there is a large variety of people, but then realized that someone here can help. Here is the original post:

Quote:
Hi guys,

I got a trojan on my PC and it's sunk its teeth into the windows system files. Actually, my brother was surfing and picked it up, and din't realise it until I tried to use my browsers and a couple of other programs. It's bad, and I'm not sure if it is salvagable at the moment because every time I try to do anything on the PC, I get the error windows poping up all over the place.

Whatever this trajan is, it deactivates all antivirus and spyware apps, and will not let you download any from the the Internet. Nor will it let you send an attachment from another PC. If it recognizes the attachment as a threat, it will not keep the zip attached to the email. In fact, it writes a nasty little note back to you stating that no such person or user resides here.

If that's not bad enough, it also blocks system recovery, autorun, the "Run" utility, and safe mode when booting.

This thing is nasty, that's for sure.

Anyway, this particular PC (HP Pavilion media center) did not come with a recovery disk, so I created recovery disks manually right after I booted the PC up for the first time.

Now I'm not that great with settting up PCs, partitioning, and that sort of stuff, so came in here to ask the warriors.

Here is what I need to know:

1) Do I hve to wipe the HD before using the recovery disks? If so, how do I do this?

2) Will these recovery disks set up the partitions and everything? Or would I still have to do that?

3) If they will set everything up for me, how do I install them if the auto run is blocked?

I'd appreciate any and all help.

Thanks ....

Mary

Hey guys,

I got this resolved. Unfortunately, I had to use my recovery disks, and this pretty much wipes out everything. But, the good news is that I didn't have to do much - my brother helped load the disks and wait for me. Plus, I kept most of my exe files for the software I own. Now that's pretty cool!

The only thing I regret losing is my emails because I had a few years stored up, and could go back and refer to them. :/

Man, I hope none of you guys ever ever get that trojan I had on this system. It works very quickly, and will shut you down by first latching onto the Win32 files, and then the bat and system files. It's the nastiest thing I've ever had to deal with.

Hey JB and Buffy,

Na, he doesn't feel bad at all. He still can't figure out that he made a mess of things. I told him from now on though he is banned from my desktop lol. He can do whatever he wishes with his own laptop.

You know, I've never ever got a trojan hooked into my PC in 10 yrs. I guess I was over due with this one.

Btw, I'll be sure to pass your thoughts ontpo my brother to give him an extra gouging (spell?)!

Hey Karsten,

I didn't say this is the same computer I had for 10 years lol, or at least I didn't think I did. I said that's the amount of imformation, programs, docs, etc ... that I've lost over a 10 year time span. I just use cables to transfer my important stuff onto my new PCs when I get them.

Now though, I lost everything and am starting fresh. That stinks huh? At least from my stand point.

Btw, I assure you that I spend my fair share on computers over the years. Trust me.

Oh my, I got that one too, and it was the first time I'd gotten one in over 9 years of using the internet. I had to start all over as well. I'm so bad about not backing the computer up. I still feel at a loss as to how I got the darn thing. But, I would like to recommend something a computer nerd friend of mine suggested. He uses not virus protection and never has this problem. I'm not quite that brave, but I did use this little freeware and it definitely enhanced the quickness of my computer.

Hey Majyk,

Lol remember when I was playing with you and told you I picked up a bug from you? Well guess what? It wasn't you, but that's when I got that trojan infestation. Man, was it wicked!

So you weren't the only one having to recover a PC that week.

Okay thanks, and I'll check it out.

Btw, it's good to see you posting on the forum again.
