Default Is Cloud Computing going to be a reality?

This probably isn't a new concept to most of you but, I ran across an article stating Google is likely to come out with their GDrive. Basically it's an application that could potentially do away with PC's as we know them. All your appliations and your personal files could be out on a internet based hard drive that you could access anywhere.

One side of me says hey that'd be pretty cool, but then again it definetly brings up questions of the security of your files / information, you could be at the mercy of Google (would they add adverts to your documents? lol)

They say this could make the cost of home computing drop drastically.

What do you guys think about this? Any thoughts on IM'ing opportunities or is it to early to really know

Jason

Yup,

If heard of the GDrive a few weeks ago. I'm not all that impressed with it. Personally, people like me won't buy into storing all our info in Google. They know enough about me already let alone my finances, and other personal things.

The biggest thing or roadblock will be security issues with the GDrive.

Lol I was reading all the law suites about G's toolbar. Man, if they are having a hard time with it because of the simple info they collect from it, don't you think they will have even a harder time with something like the GDrive?

It is a great idea, but they have to address a few issues before people really get ready for it. The biggest advantage as i see it will be that there will be no crashes and no virus infections as the Google server will take care of all of it. However the biggest issue is that of security. how secure are the files? Who all can access it and what is the guarantee? Will it be a paid service or will it be totally free?

By any chance do you have a link to that original article? I'd like to read it if you still have it.

Thanks.

Many of the changes people are expecting will not happen simply because people like to keep local copies of their work. Even those who are trusting of centralized services like Google Docs or Steam won't neglect to keep local copies of both documents and applications, for the simple reason that hard disk space is so inexpensive and soon will be practically free.

The real potential for cloud computing is in its potential for collaboration, both professional and at home. My wife & I are using Google Docs & Calendar for silly things like grocery lists and to keep track of petty expenditures. I think the real impact of cloud computing will be the countless small collaborations among friends, clubs, artists, you name it.

Cloud Computing is most definitely going to be around and be a viable option for many people.

My buddy, Jon is actually doing an experiment for his school (he is a teacher). He bought the MSI Wind Netbook and is using it exclusively for 30 days - using only cloud applications to complete his work.

Check out his blog about it at Cloud Browser | Cloud Computing offers the ability to access software or information that can be delivered on-demand, over the internet, without the need to store it locally. - MichalMarlatt He also touches on the security issues. Now...the privacy issues will be interesting - but the security issues are not what would hold me back.

Thanks Will,

That's pretty interesting, I'll have to check out that blog. I think you're right, I think it's probably not a matter of if, but when this will happen.

Do you think there's any IM'ing opportunities with this happening??

Yes well you are right one will be at the mercy of google, but otherwise the GDrive looks to be a great opportunity. It seems that cloud computing has come to stay and will become more popular in the days to come. From whatever i have read about it appears to be very exciting.

The security aspect has not been answered by google yet.And naturally people will be skeptical on suing it initially. But with time,GDrive will pick up.Some other people have already started this concept and are struggling to keep it going. However, its so useful.

We already have cloud computing. Back in the day we used to have "dumb terminals" that connected to mainframes. It's just the same thing only on a bigger scale... Except is gonna be very slow. Bandwidth costs alot, the US has a slow adoption rate for broadband and we'll need more and more as apps get more complicated. Cloud computing is just techno-babble, it will go away.
There are no security concerns, Google doesn't share the info with other companies, it's just a privacy problem, because they store data about your actions for 1+ years.
