Default Advice on working with / installing scripts

Hi everyone,

One of the IM'ing skills sets I need to work on is working with and installing scripts.

I have some scripts for my Article Dashboard site that I want to install.

Do you guys have or know of any good resources on working with and installing scripts? I assume scripts are all a different monster depending on what they are?

This is something I want to start learning but I'm a little nervous about doing some damage. Know what I mean?

To be honest I haven't done any googling or youtubing to find anything, but I was just wondering if all you smart guys and gals can help shorten my learning curve.

THank everyone,

Jason

Default Re: Advice on working with / installing scripts

Hey Jason,

The best resourses for scripts are the help files or installation instructions. As a rule, no 2 scripts install the same especially if they were created by different people. They normally server different functions. Yes, some may be similar in nature, but even then 9 out of 10 times the install is different to some capacity or another.

The problem with giving you a specific resource is that every script is different, and what you do with one script, you may not do in another.

For instance, some scripts use PHP for the programming language, so you may have to change some of the site's extensions, etc ... Some may be in other languages as well.

The best way I know of to get good at installing scripts is by practicing installing scripts. It's mainly trial and error at the beginning, but you'll find that most scripts aren't that difficult to install if the owner gives good install directions.

Also, remember to back up your site before you install any script if it calls for you to install files in the root directory. You can do that right in your VPS.

This way, if you do mess up, you always have that back up, so you loose nothing, but you end up gaining knowledge even if it's what not to do the next time.

Btw, don't be intimidated with script installations. Just jump right in and give it a go. Lol the only one that will ever know if you messed up will be you unless you install a script and let it run without knowing it isn't working right.

Hope this helps ...
