Great post, but I think I am going to have to disagree with you on this forum one... I am a self-proclaimed forum junkie and have been in various webmaster and general "make money online" forums for 4 years or so.
If done correctly. and in the right threads, forum posting can be all about you. In many forums I do most of my posting in the General Chat areas. It's not because I have nothing of value to add to the more serious threads (okay, maybe that is the reason) but useless non-sense seems to be my specialty. I can really establish myself as a fun loving goofball. That earns me a reputation and a bit of a following.
Then when I do say something profound or useful in one of the more serious areas of the fourm, people actually notice. And they probably think something like "Whoa, Buffy really does have a brain!"
And even egotistical maniacs can be well accepted in a forum setting as long as you can
prove that you have every right to have that chip on your shoulder.
