Default I saw where the Philadelphia Inquirrer and The Daily News filed for chapter 11

I saw where the Philadelphia Inquirrer and The Daily News filed for a chapter 11 today! That suprised the heck out of me. I know I also heard that a couple of newspaper companies in LA filed too prior to these two.

The news person on stated that the newspaper companies were blaming their loss on the Internet becuase places like calssified sites were getting more views then their classifeds in the papers. They also claimed that The newspaper companies weren't making the money they used to from people placing advertisments.

Me? I think they had to file becuase of the economy. They never raised their prices to the consumer to make up for the inflation costs. They did however raise the cost of advertisment though.

Beings how many buisnesses are struggling just to stay open, it's no wonder the Newspapers weren't getting advertisers.

The Internet may not help matters much, but I don't think the newspapers hould put he blame on it, but most of all, I don't think the Internet is going to take over what the newspapers were doing at this time.

Any thoughts?

I believe it. I would much rather read my local newspaper online than on paper. They just need to keep up with the times and start selling subscriptions to their website instead of ways they have made money in the past. I would gladly pay extra to get premium content on my local newspaper site.

I would imagine that it would save a lot of trees as well.

I used to live in Philadelphia and that was a very good paper. It makes me sad. Even though I read most of my news online I really enjoy the paper. More relaxing. Problem is I feel I get more accurate news online from certain sites.

I saw an article about that very subject just this last weekend, that is about people basically getting the same content for free on online vs paying for there newspaper subscription. There was mention of charge for the online access.

We just get the Saturday and Sunday paper. My wife couldn't life w/o her sale ads

Long term I could see how the internet will make it harder and harder for newspapers to compete, and yeah the economy is making everyone contract their spending (or stop).
