Default Will the internet replace t.v.?

I really wanted to see the concert on the Mall today. I'm so excited about this inauguration. Plus, Bruce Springsteen was playing and he is my all time favorite rocker.

So, I intended to watch the special on HBO. But, I got busy and didn't catch the 11:30 a.m (my time) show. No problem, I thought, I'll watch the 4:00 rebroadcast. At 5:30 I said "agh!" (an actual quote) "I missed it!"

The thing is that all I really wanted to see was Obama's remarks and the Boss. So, around 9:30 I went over to YouTube and downloaded the two things I wanted to see. I didn't have to sit through Beyonce (no offense, but I'm just not that into her) or any of the other musicians. I got to see exactly what I wanted in 15 minutes and could go back to my busy day.

The one downside of doing it this way was that I saw it on my 17 inch monitor instead of my 46 inch t.v. There are still things that I want my t.v. for. But, I wonder how much of the t.v. we want to view can be broken up into just the bits we really care about. At what point will youtube replace the networks.

I truly believe that eventually everything we do will be digital and through some sort of internet port. You can already connect your PC to your TV and basically watch your shows that way. You can download them via YouTube or iTunes and many other sites offer these services too. It is only a matter of time before TV on TV becomes obsolete. Why do you think the feds are making analog go away?

I truly think that TV will one way or another become if not obsolete, atleast absorbed into the internet. We are on ATT Uverse and it actually had a att bar on the TV, giving many of the items you find on your search bars. It has real time weather, stocks, sports etc. With everything going digital it will arrive sooner than later.

I believe someday traditional TV will go away. Didn't Apple come out with a TV / Computer type of product that didn't really take off?

Look at what music has done over the last several years. Apple not to long ago became the biggest retailer of music via iTunes. I think movies are probably going to end up this way as well. Memory gets cheaper all the time, I remember paying $70 for 256Mg memory stick, now they practically give away 2 and 4 Gb sticks.

I think at some point the internet will become the TV. I mean, NBC already posts all their shows online, and mind you, they’re full episodes. I don’t even bother watching them on the tele anymore, too many commercials, I just wait till it comes out on the internet.

I agree with Zietgeist that we will end up with some fusion of both television and internet. I imagine everything will meld into a single station. What technology platform it will be based on is only for the future to know. After all, new technologies are being developed and discarded at an amazing pace

No internet can't replace tv because, to view any video advertisement we have download or pay for it through internet. Using tv its only one time charge for the customer, monthly billing, internet and tv are bigger competitior at present in the market, but mostly ;the preference is given to the tv, because , mainly people daily spends atleast 3 hrs on tv in india, rather than on internet . all my views based on indian customer usage

I know the internet has mostly replaced TV in my life. Sometimes I have it on when I am online, but I don't know why. I don't really even watch it. I'll stick in a movie that I want to see, but I'll have to play it over and over before I catch enough of it to really know what is going on.

The only TV series that I keep up with is Survivor. And I don't even watch that on TV. I just catch it sometime later in the week and I watch it on the CBS.com website.

That's how it is in my house, unless I'm working on something that requires my 110% total concentration.

I don't think television is going to become totally obsolete anytime soon. There are still too many people that don't have the type of computer literacy that we all have. Think senior citizens, those in rural areas where dial-up is still their main means of getting online, etc. Although technology is evolving rapidly and yes, you can stream your PC to your TV, it will take awhile before TV as we know it, goes the way of the dinosaur.

How many of you want to watch the Super Bowl on your computer screens?

I predict you will see the demise of newspapers in the very near future as they move all their content online. They are no longer an affordable method of disseminating news or advertising. That makes me rather sad, however, since you really can't enjoy a cup of coffee over a computer screen in the morning. (At least I can't.)

I think the freedom and personal choice of the internet will definitely become part of the typical TV watching process someday soon, but people are not too crazy about giving up (as the OP said) the quality of a large-screen television for a smaller computer monitor. Maybe when the two become more integrated so it’s easier to view the computer screen on a television.

Well, since right now I don't use the TV for anything else other than gaming or watching my DVDs, I think that the internet is well on it's way to replace the TV, and there are very good reasons for that, you can get the news, the shows, the enterteinment from the web whenever you want to, instead of having to wait for it.

I love the internet

Probably to some extent, but TV won't just disappear. It's in many ways complementary to the internet. For example, when I want to see something in particular, I use my laptop and I find what I need (I use both streaming sites and p2p). But, most of the time, I don't need to watch anything in particular. I just turn on the tv and, flip the channels and find something that holds my interest. Having said that, it's clear that TV is evolving and will continue to evolve.

I truely agree that internet is replacing TV. I spends 5-6 hours in using internet and 2-3 hours i spend on watching TV. Becouse in internet you can get everything which is favorite you can can not wait for that. If you wanna watch you can watch but in TV you have to wait. I watch Movies in internet and serials which i miss i can see in my laptop. Internet have a bright future than TV. This is true.

That's what they're saying...as long aas I can get my TCM station. My favorite movie is Harvey, and they often play it there. Nothing like Jimmy Stewart!

maybe the pc will go away, as people want fast easy and multiple gadgets in one product. I think the tv will evolve, don't forget the mcdonalds generation, without tv ...
