Tangible Product Promotions

Tangible Product Promotions

Tangibles are shunned by many Internet marketers who don’t want to deal with physical goods. It can be a nightmare if you factor in the nuisance of packaging and shipping, stocking of inventory, and suppliers.

There are three ways you can deal in tangibles if you want to focus solely on those or supplement them with your digital download links.  The first is to become a seller of tangible yourself.

This will most likely mean selling on eBay, but sometimes a marketer goes off on their own and launches a website to sell the goods from.  You’ll be plagued with making sure you have enough inventory on hand, and if an order comes through, it will be your job to box it up, take it to the post office, and ship it out.

If the customer doesn’t receive the goods, you should be able to verify proof of delivery.  In some instances, you’ll have to accept returns on the products, and won’t always be able to resell it depending on what the product is.

Another option is to become a seller of tangibles by using a dropshipper.  With a dropship account, you’ll usually have to pay a fee to get set up with your own website – for instance, wedding accessories.

The customer will find your site online and place an order, paying you for the items they purchase. You’ll then turn around and pay the dropship company a portion of those earnings and they’ll ship the inventory to your customer direct.

You don’t have to deal with any of the inventory, but you do have to deal with customer relations.  The customer won’t realize they’ve ordered from a dropshipping arrangement, so even though you’re just a middleman, you’ll be acting as the frontman.

Your third option for selling tangibles is to become an affiliate of tangibles.  Millions of people shop online, and around the holidays, an affiliate can rank in a lot of Christmas cash.

But holidays aren’t the only time when tangible promotions will work.  You can use an Amazon associates account to sell anything on Amazon.com. Likewise, you can get an ID from LinkShare and promote tangible items from flower boutiques, Wal-Mart, and even travel companies (like luggage)!

Is Affiliate Marketing or Network Marketing Right For You? – Part II

Network Marketing

Now, lets take a look at network marketing and its differences from affiliate marketing. Network marketing is in its infancy online. Most network, or multilevel, marketers build their businesses offline through personal contacts or offline advertising like classified ads and local flyers, even flee markets and local athletic events such as marathons and high school sports.

So, the opportunity to get in front of other network marketers who are just now starting the move to online businesses is high. This does not mean an easy or a necessarily quick path to a good income for you, but it has the potential for less sophisticated competition in your market niche than you will find in affiliate marketing.

Next, the ability to earn a generous income in network marketing comes from attracting and recruiting business builders and less from pure product sales. The highest incomes in network marketing comes from leaders who took full advantage of the compensation plans that reward finding, recruiting, training and supporting others who want a good life from the high recurring incomes that are possible in this business.

That’s not to say that product sales are not important as you build your business, they are. Product sales are the only source of income in legitimate network marketing companies. Keep that in mind as you select which one you will use to build your business.

Product sales serve as an additional recruiting tool for building your network marketing business as your customers form bonds with the products from having good experiences and getting comments from friends and family as they lose weight, look healthier from skin care, feel healthier from wellness products, etc..

This is more true with consumable products such as health and wellness, skin care and green household products than with service offerings such as telephone, internet and legal services, but nonetheless product users are a source of business builder prospects that is not available in most affiliate marketing offerings as there is less opportunity to build a recurring user base.

There are many network marketing companies offering many different products and services. Like the research necessary in finding the right affiliate products, you will also need to do your homework here. Unfortunately, the compensation plans of network marketing can be very complex and, seemingly, impossible to understand, so you must be very attentive to this aspect of choosing which company to represent.

From a marketing perspective, established network marketing companies will have product material and business recruiting material for you to use as a base for web site copy, blogs and articles, this is not usually the case with most affiliate marketing products.

In a successful online network marketing business, hundreds of mini sites are not necessary. A recruiting site, or a few at most, product sites and effective whitehat traffic generation techniques are sufficient to provide a large and recurring income for you to have the time to enjoy your life.

The site architecture is also different between the two systems. Effective affiliate sites can be simple direct selling sites with an eye catching headline, compelling copy, testimonials and many calls to action spread throughout the site, along with a prominently positioned product satisfaction guarantee.

The architecture of an effective network marketing site is as much a relationship and trust building vehicle as it is a selling site. The need for a deep level of trust in these sites is higher because the perceived consequences of the commitment are higher. Training a new business builder takes time and trust must be established before a prospective business builder will make the financial and emotional commitment to the business leader and the business itself.

Summary

Both affiliate marketing and network marketing can provide large and stable incomes for the people willing to do what is necessary for success. While the differences are less stark than the similarities, each appeals to a different kind of entrepreneur. One, affiliate marketing, draws raw individualists who have no fear of failure and hard work to create the hundreds even thousands of sites to provide them with the independence they crave.

The other, network marketing, appeals to entrepreneurs who want independence and a generous income, but who prefer a more cooperative effort with like minded people and the long lasting professional and personal relationships that are integral to having success in this field. Which one is right for you?

Is Affiliate Marketing or Network Marketing Right For You?

Part I

There are many similarities between affiliate marketing and network, or multilevel marketing. Both benefit from online traffic generation techniques and both have many different products and services available for you to use to build your business. Most importantly, both can provide a handsome income for you.

But, how to choose between them? Some people go with Network Marketing, others go with afilliate… only you can answer what works for you, but here are some of the most important differences that may help you to decide.

Part I discusses affiliate marketing and Part II, to be published in a few days, discusses network marketing

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is the selling of products online and getting a commission on each sale. In some cases, you can develop affiliates under you where you also get a smaller commission on their sales, but primarily, you will make money only from your own efforts.

To be successful in this field, you must first find products or software that are worth selling, not only in terms of search volumes but also commission payments. The first requires research into what people are searching for online and which products will satisfy them. Typical sure fire fields with large search volumes are:

  • how to make money online
  • weight loss
  • relationship advice
  • health advice

The advantages selling into of a large market are offset by the difficulties of breaking through the existing competition for the relevant keywords that the searchers use to find what they want.

Many sophisticated affiliate marketers have discovered how to break large markets into smaller, more targeted niche markets where the number of searches in any given day are smaller but the chances of attracting a motivated searcher is higher. Niche markets can also be low search volume markets but enjoy a dedicated following, such as:

  • dog training
  • green products
  • self defense training
  • golf lessons

These true niche markets are very real opportunities to enjoy large commissions from low search volumes because these searchers want a solution to their particular concerns. These are not casual searches, they want help, they have money to spend with you, if you have the headline to attract their attention, the copy to prove that your offering satisfies their issue and the ability to deliver the product quickly.

So, after you have identified a market, or niche, how do you find products to sell? The two most popular are Commission Junction and Clickbank.  Other product sources exist on Amazon, eBay and dedicated distributors who will stock and drop ship their products on your behalf. Some will even offer payment services through their company and pay your commissions. Many CJ and Clickbank products will have a re-direct site to their PayPal account but some may expect your site to have a shopping cart service to accept payment from your customers. All ebook and most software products and online courses offer instant access to the products purchased by your customer after payment confirmation has been received from PayPal.

Looking at and analyzing commissions payments as you research products should be part of your selection process. After all, the point of this is to build a generous income for yourself, so pick the best product with the best commission program, even if there are better products available but with lower payouts to you.

Now, you are ready to buy a URL or several, based on the keyword research you did for finding your market and product. In general, you want to buy the long tail keyword as the URL as these sites will be recognized, sooner, by the major search engines as having the best match to the keywords entered by the searcher.

Once your site is built, you need to be noticed, and that means you need to drive traffic to your site. There are many, many, strategies to get results ranging from free traffic building with articles, blogs, videos, giveaway offers to paid strategies like Adwords and ezine advertising.

Finally, to earn a very large and stable income from affiliate marketing, you will need to build many sites with different products, with each site getting a few visitors each day and earning a small commission each day. This requires that you will continually research market search numbers and find products to fill those niches and have an adequate commission payout for you.

Most successful affiliate marketers have hundreds of mini sites that, combined, provide a large monthly income.

To escape that constant work of finding the next product to sell, you may wish to design your own products or software to offer to other affiliate marketers. This can provide a large and long lasting income base, if you create a great product, a generous commission plan and a large list of affiliate marketers who will act as super-affiliates and use their large email lists to promote them.

Summary of Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing offers you a large number of online products and physical products to market and sell. While the competition for keywords in the best markets is high, the imaginative marketer can either create differentiation for themselves in a large volume market or find profitable niche markets to exploit.

As an affiliate marketer, you are on your own in creating copy, web site, blogs, videos and other material to bring qualified traffic to your sites, and, you may have to build hundreds or even thousands of sites to truly have an ample recurring revenue stream. Or, you can create your own online products and develop relationships with existing, successful super affiliates who will market your products to their large email lists.

Recruiting Affiliates for Your Info Product Sales

Recruiting affiliate marketers

Many marketers promote their product but never think about how they’re excluding the promotion of their affiliate program. If you have a product to promote, then you want to show others how they can make money online by becoming your affiliate.

For example – let’s say you’ve written an eBook on building a greenhouse. Don’t simply set up promotions for the actual course about greenhouses. Instead, you want to start an affiliate page or site that teaches people how to make money promoting products like yours.

Some newer marketers ask why they’d want to pay an affiliate 50% commission when they could make the sale themselves and keep 100% of the money. But the problem is, you wouldn’t be pulling in all of those customers that affiliates can bring to your site – so not only won’t you get 100% of the sale, but you won’t even get the 50% without affiliates.

To recruit the best affiliates you want to advertise your product in affiliate marketplaces such as ClickBank and PayDotCom. You also want to provide plenty of tools for the affiliates to use.

A good starter set of affiliate tools would include:

Banner and button ads

Articles

A viral report

Blog posts

Keyword lists

PPC ads

And you want to educate prospective affiliates about how to use the tools to drive traffic to your site for sales. By recruiting affiliates, you will have multiple sites directing people to your product. They earn and you earn.

But in order to build a solid affiliate program, you have to make it worthwhile for them to promote your product. Dismal commission percentages won’t keep people working for you.

Your affiliate program can be set up either to pay affiliates by the lead, the sale or in some cases by having potential customers click on a link. However you set up your program, it has to be beneficial enough to draw them in and keep them promoting for you.

How to Be a Super Affiliate Marketer

Super Affiliates
Too many online entrepreneurs settle for becoming a marketer when they could be so much more. Are you one of them? Have you heard other marketers bragging about making thousands each week when you’re barely squeaking out a few dollars?

Take a look at what separates you from them. It’s not that they’re any smarter or any more talented. It’s simply that they found what worked and then worked it until the profits started rolling in. So how did they do it and how can you copy that success?

First of all, you have to know what you need to promote. Just because you happen to like a product doesn’t mean that it will sell well, so don’t just look for products that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Instead, research what the hot selling products are and look for the products that will give you a higher return. For example, 10% of a $1,000 product is $100 in your pocket. But 50% of a $60 product is just $30 in your pocket, so don’t rely on percentages alone.

Once you find a good item to promote, start marketing aggressively. Talk it up on your website, present it on your blog, write articles about it, bring it to the attention of the public on Squidoo, Hub Pages, Google Knol and on your other social media sites.

Next, go the extra mile. Everyone likes dessert. So after you offer the main course of the product, sweeten the deal with a little something extra that savvy marketers often call a bonus.

It’s sort of like the television offers you’ve heard: “But wait! There’s more!” which is a line used to seal the deal, to tip the scales in the marketer’s favor – which of course is the customer making a purchase.

You want to offer the product and then bring on the extra. You have to make it something the potential buyer really wants and he can’t get it without buying the product. Something that complements the original purchase nicely – not a bonus that’s irrelevant to their needs.

You also want to create a buzz or spread the word about the bonus offer as well. Not only do you let the general public know about the offer, but you also make sure your list knows there’s a special deal waiting for them if they buy.

Anticipation is what creates an appetite among buyers. The worst thing for a marketer is to have a product that no one knows about. While word of mouth will bring in a few customers, your pre-launch days for your product are what will bring in the masses. Do a count down until the product releases and once it goes live, let your customers race out of the gate to be one of the first buyers.

Affiliate Marketing – An Easy Way to Success

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is when you sign up to promote other people’s products (or services) for a share of the sale in the form of commissions.  As an affiliate marketer, you usually don’t need any special training or start-up funding.

Your tasks as an affiliate marketer will be to drum up traffic to the product owner’s pitch page, allowing them to convert the prospect into a buyer.  The more targeted you are with your traffic promotions, the higher your conversion rate will be.

There are many things you can promote as an affiliate. On Amazon, for instance, you can promote anything tangible (and a few digital download to boot).  If you want to be in the paintball niche, you can include links using your Amazon associate (affiliate) ID to sell specific paintball guns, paintballs, and attire.

You can go to sites like ClickBank or PayDotCom and get a unique affiliate ID to promote an endless supply of information products.  They house everything from acne to organic gardening.

You can even become an affiliate promoting actions.  There are many Internet marketers who focus their business on getting a steady stream of traffic to take an action, such as filling out a survey online.

With affiliate marketing, you don’t have to worry about developing ideas and creating products.  You don’t have to deal with customer service follow-ups or continually process more products for the marketplace.

Your job is often made easier by product owners who care so much about their own success, that they provide a toolbox to help you with yours!  The toolbox usually includes readymade emails, web reviews, and banner ads you can use with your own link embedded in them for instant plug-n-play success.

Most Internet marketers will eventually blur the lines of product owner and affiliate marketer.  Product owners continually use their list of buyers to promote affiliate items, and affiliates often build such a good reputation in a niche that they’re urged to come out with a product of their own.

How much can an affiliate marketer earn? There are no limits. You can market multiple niches and work as much or as little as you want to generate targeted traffic through your links.  Super affiliates earn six figures or more, but even a beginner affiliate can earn enough to pay the bills each month – with some change to spare!

Cloaking Your Links to Protect Your Commission

Links

Link cloaking is a very important part of affiliate marketing.  In a nutshell, link cloaking is a way to protect your affiliate commissions from being stolen.  It’s not totally foolproof.  Smart individuals who are well-educated about the matter can still figure out how to keep you from getting your commission.

Most people won’t go that far, so cloaking your links will prevent most commission loss. How do people steal affiliate commissions?  Have you ever hovered over a link and noticed that the link was an obvious affiliate link?

Some people type in the parent domain instead of clicking the link as a way of making sure the owner of the site gets paid 100% for the sale.  Some people falsely believe that if they buy from an affiliate link, they’ll have to pay more for a commission mark-up.

Some people actually do it for a different reason.  If you’re promoting a ClickBank product, especially to other marketers, many of them know they can insert their own ClickBank ID and get what’s usually a 50% or more discount on the product.

This is a different type of affiliate commission theft, because the person doing it gets the affiliate commission themselves, rather than just making sure you don’t get it.  Most people don’t do that, of course.

Most people are pretty honest, and don’t mind giving you a little affiliate commission in exchange for recommending a good product to them.  But it’s enough of a concern that you should take steps to prevent it.

You can easily set up your own link cloaking system.  What you would do is set up a directory on one of your domains.  Most marketers use the domain of their own name, as in bobsmith.com.  They typically have a subdirectory called /recommends/.

Then in that directory, they create a new subdirectory for each product.  It would look something like this: http://www.bobsmith.com/recommends/awesomeproductname. In that directory, they place a very simple PHP redirect called index.php.

Whenever they send someone to the above link, the script will redirect to your affiliate link.  All you have to do is create a file in Notepad or your favorite HTML editor and name is index.php.  Then paste the following information into the file and upload it to your directory:

< ?php
header(“location:http://affiliates.programhere.com/5555″);
?>

There are a number of link cloaking scripts available.  Most of them are relatively easy to install and use.  There’s a big benefit to using a script rather than doing it yourself.  Using your simple redirect, there isn’t an easy way to check how much traffic you’ve sent to your link.

Most link cloaking scripts allow you to add new links very easily within an administrative area, and then each link is tracked so that you can see how much traffic is going through the link.  If you use your own file, the only way to tell how much traffic you’ve sent is through your affiliate stats, which may be inaccurate, or through your web server’s stats, which may be clunky to use or hard to understand.

Another way you can do it is to use a link cloaking tool, such as Go Try This.  This lets you enter the raw affiliate link and name your link whatever you want as an extension of your domain. Then you can log in and check stats to see how the top 10 links are performing using a diagram and bar graph.

Choosing an Affiliate Partner

choosing a partner

In the world of internet marketing, and affiliate marketing, much of the success you see is due to strategic partnership between the many different groups of people online. An internet marketer who has created his own product with then either branch out into the affiliate manager group, or perhaps hire someone to look after his program for him. Over time you’ll start receiving offers to promote and joint venture on products, and product launches, and it’s important to do your due diligence regarding each marketer to ensure you will both make a good fit for each other.

There are a few key things that need to be met from both parties involved and in order for the relationship to be successful each one needs to be met. This helps ensure the success of the project that you both are undertaking together, because while it might happen primarily over email, it should still be taken as a serious business partnership or alliance.

A Targeted Niche

The affiliate manager, or the person with the product is usually looking for individuals in the same niche as himself as the product fit will be more appropriate, and the visitors your website is already receiving will be highly targeted to his particular offer or product. Generally internet marketers have other resources that are similarly targeted toward the particular offer in the way of email lists, twitter accounts, Fan pages, etc. Obviously the more firepower (eyeballs) you can get onto an offer, the more successful it will be.

Professionalism

It’s important that both parties involved bring a high level of professionalism to the table or you could end up damaging the reputation of one or the other, this is your business and most likely your livelihood so I’m not going to dwell on this point because I assume you are all treating both your business, and your customers in a respectful and professional manner.

Solid Affiliate Tracking System

I’ve dealt with both and have to say the sense of unease you get when the affiliate tracking software is missing hits, and potentially sales isn’t something that lends itself to a good night sleep. And even though sales might be coming in through that program, it is always sitting there at the back of your mind “am I missing sales”? Products in this category will usually get dropped altogether, or at the very least receive a minimal amount of promotion.

Promotional Assets

Parties are bringing different talents and assets to the table here, the affiliate has his website, his list and contacts, but it’s also important that the product have a full complement of materials that can be used to promote the offer. Some things to look for are:

-          Banners in different sizes, colors, and formats

-          Email copy that can be sent to your list

-          Sales video’s go a long way toward conversions

-          Keyword Lists that you can target should you be coming from a PPC direction

-          A high converting sales page is a nice asset

-          Ad Copy

-          A quality product

-          Efficient delivery system

-          Secure payment system

-          Great customer service

-          Fair commission structure for both parties

-          Open communication between both parties

Obviously the more you each can offer the other the better the success of the partnership, and at the end of the day it’s all about getting a quality product in front of someone who needs it, resulting in a sale. I believe it was Joe Girard who said “Sales isn’t something you do TO someone, but something you do FOR them”.

Getting Paid

Affiliate marketing is still one of the most lucrative ways to make money online, and many internet marketers have more campaigns than they can keep track of. Now as someone who signs up and promotes my fair share of offers, I can tell you that there are two sides to that coin, and both aren’t positive.

On the one hand, I’m always being surprised by payments into my PayPal Account from places I signed up with, promoted, and then forgot about because they just didn’t seem to convert for me, or I just had too much to think about at the time. Found money is pretty cool, and is always a nice unexpected surprise to wake up to.

Now on the other hand there are times when the affiliate program has money you’ve earned through referrals, and decides to shut down or sell their program without first paying out their affiliates. When this happens it can be difficult to prove that they did indeed owe you anything at all. There are a few things you can do to keep track of the various places you are accumulating money online, and protect yourself should the worst happen.

First and foremost you should keep track of all the affiliate programs you join and promote in an excel file that contains at minimum the affiliate company, products your promoting, and sales you’ve made with them. It might seem like a lot of trouble when you consider the number of companies you may have signed up with, but since this is your money on the table, and it might mean the difference between getting paid, and not, I’d recommend you at least try and keep track of it.

Another thing you can do that will help out is take a screenshot of your affiliate panel showing the earnings from time to time, and just store them on your computer. Should the need ever arise where someone is asking for proof of earnings on an affiliate program that they have discontinued or abandoned for some reason.

You might want to implement some sort of affiliate tracking system directly on your blog or website as well that tracks the clicks of your visitors; I personally use MaxblogPress Ninja Affiliate, and have always been happy with it.

Monitoring and tracking the performance of your affiliate campaigns is just part of the business, and at the end of the year it can mean a huge difference in your profitability.

Tips for Implementing Affiliate Offers into your Blog

Blogging can be a great way to express yourself, but it can also be a great way to subsidize, or in some cases replace your income entirely. One of those sources of income will surely be from affiliate offers that you mix into your content. Here are a few tips to get the most out of those affiliate offers, and maximize your potential earnings.

Know your readers

If you have a blog where you discuss muscle cars, then it probably isn’t going to make sense to target ads for SEO tools, or gardening equipment. Sure your readers may have blogs of their own, and require SEO tools, and some of them will even have gardens, but the conversion rates you will experience won’t be anywhere near where they should be, because the ads aren’t targeted to the audience. Chances are if I’m spending time regularly on your site though you would have a good chance of enticing me with performance parts, visual upgrades like mag wheels, custom lighting, gauges, or even offers of cheap car insurance through Geico! Implementing targeted ads will not only ensure that you receive the highest possible conversions possible with your offers, but will also blend into the overall theme of the site as well. If I’m visiting a website dedicated to muscle cars, then having somewhere to buy muscle cars, or the parts for them isn’t obtrusive but more of a service since I regularly buy them anyway, it might as well be from a website I already frequent on a regular basis and most likely trust to some degree or another based on the fact that they have dedicated a portion of their own time and resources into bringing me quality information on a regular basis.

Personal recommendations

Invest more time and effort, as well as giving up the best ad spots for offers that you can personally recommend to your readers, because you actually use the product yourself, and are impressed with it. If a product, or service has impressed you in some way, and you feel that it is head and shoulders above other similar, or competing products then share this information with your readers and you should see a slightly higher conversion rate over other products, even ones that are publicly known to be solid performers, but are not being personally used by yourself.

Suggestive selling

By placing your affiliate offers around related material where it is likely to be seen and picked up by people who would most benefit from the product or service, you will have the best chance of success while at the same time performing a service for the person who buys it. I wrote an eBook that walks people through the same process that I took to start up my own online business, and within those steps are things like registering a domain name, setting up hosting etc. Now these people can go out and do the research and choose to register and host with whatever company they like, but since they already have a relationship with me, many of them choose to trust in the fact that I have already researched the different companies, and simply take my recommendation which is also an affiliate link to the different products or services that I’ve been talking about in my eBook. Imagine how much additional business a car dealership would experience if they also incorporated an insurance company onsite. The people could choose to drive across town and insure their vehicle and head back to pick up their car, or they could just do it all in one location, chances are many would choose the simpler option.

Use different media delivery methods

Don’t limit yourself to just one type of affiliate marketing strategy within your blog. Use as many different delivery channels as you can, and invest the time and energy into the ones that perform the best. The most common one I see is the affiliate banner ads situated on the different pages of a person’s blog, but you can also choose to write a specific review on a product or service and have it be its own post. You can merely make reference to a product or service that you use, or have used and include your affiliate link within the post. Sending out tweets to your followers is another method that has proven to be lucrative in the past but is losing its effectiveness due to the many spammers that are prolific on Twitter nowadays. Sending out affiliate offers to your email list is another great way to convert readers into customers. Writing an eBook for your readers benefit, while at the same time including your affiliate links within the book has been around forever, and is still going strong today.

Diversify

Don’t limit yourself to just a couple of affiliate offers, but spread them out through appropriate and relevant blog posts. People will be reading quality blog posts for many years after they have been written, and making money on those affiliate offers that are embedded into them isn’t a bad way to supplement your income.

Monitor your campaigns

Don’t be afraid to cancel affiliate banner spots that aren’t performing in order to replace them with ads that will. Make sure you measure the results of your different ad campaigns, and fine tune them so that you are maximizing your returns on them, after all if you’ve invested the time and money into building up your blog to a respectable level, then you should be compensated for the advertising spots that you allow to show throughout your blog.

Affiliate marketing is a great way to make money blogging, and exploring the different methods, and delivery vehicles that are available to you as a blog owner can be fun and exciting as well, not at all like the work many of us have or still do in the corporate world. If you’re going to go to the trouble of building up a high traffic blog with bazillions of readers, then you might as well maximize the earning potential of it also.
