The Importance of Social Media – Beyond Blogging

Social Networking SitesThe myriad ways in which the possibilities of the internet are put to use these days in terms of internet marketing continue to grow in leaps and bounds. Whereas before all you needed to do to make money online was provide advertising on your website or sell legitimate products, there are now infinite ways to keep your customers connected not only to you, but to one another as well. The importance of social media and social networking is certainly not one to discount, for this has changed the rules completely and blurred the lines between businesses and their customers.

Many businesses that are based online or in real life have their own Facebook or MySpace profiles, which allow customers to become friends or fans of them. In this case, the importance of social media such as these networking sites is that they allow you to have access to your client’s interests, by browsing their profiles, as well as allows them to have full access to what you want to share with them. The most successful ways to make use of this is not to make your profile seem too business-y. It should not look like an ad in the yellow pages, for example. Internet marketing is far more subtle than that.

Ideally, your profile will be fun and include not only basic information about your website or blog, but also have pictures, fun news articles that relate to topics of interest, and other information that is consistently updated. That will ensure that your customers or friends of their friends will want to take a look at what’s going on with your website, raising your search engine ranking and increasing your contact list. That is a great way to use internet marketing tools at your disposal, and really highlights the important of social media in this context.

Another way in which these social networking sites can be used to your advantage is that they allow you to post status updates or send out mass messages to all of your friends or fans. For instance if you want them to click on another website you have created, they may be tempted to after you post a status update with the URL. It’s important however to make sure that you don’t sound too internet marketing-focused with these updates, or you will lose a level of client trust and most likely get deleted by your network. In all of these ways, the importance of social media has grown in leaps and bounds.
