Success Series Goal – Comments

comments

The third goal in the success series is comments, comments are a crucial ingredient to the success of your blog, and without them you are missing out on an opportunity to get to know your visitors on a much more personal level. This is also the section that gives your readers a voice with which to join in and offer up their own insights into the topic being discussed.

When I first started blogging last year, I was soon introduced to comment spammers, and rather than deal with each spam comment individually I chose to turn comments off entirely eliminating the problem. I kept things this way, and for a while didn’t mind the lack of interaction because I had so much else to keep me busy.

By the time I realized I was missing out on an opportunity to connect with people other than my Twitter following, or Facebook friends I’d already trained my visitors not to comment, and have had a tough time trying to turn that around.

One day I’d like to have it where each of my blog posts are receiving 50 or 60 comments and I’m able to discuss topics in a more in depth manner that will lead to us all sharing even more knowledge and enabling us to learn from each other in a more interactive way.

Here are a few things you can try in order to increase the number of comments your blog is receiving.

1.       Make sure you have a subscribe to comments feature enabled so that the people who do take the time to ask a question or leave a comment can be notified by email when you or another visitor responds. (the response could be the answer to his question)

2.       Try and respond to everyone who takes the time to leave a comment, obviously there may come a time when you can’t respond to every one, but up until that point I’d sure try!

3.       Respond in a timely manner. Try not to let it go days on end before answering. If you’re really lucky you can get a back and forth conversation going, and before you know it you’ve racked up 20 or 30 comments in no time.

4.       Use a reward system for top commentators, or all commentators.  Some blogs have a do-follow link using your keyword anchor text as a reward for the top commentators, while others use plugins like Commentluv to reward each of their commenters. Whichever route you decide on keep in mind it never hurts to test each one out to see which results in the higher performance level, and increased comments.

5.       Offer to reciprocate with other bloggers, one for one. They leave a comment, you leave a comment. This can be a great way to help each other get some momentum going.

6.       Seed your own comments to get the ball rolling, some very high profile blogs not only did this in the beginning to get started, but still do it in order to create some controversy on their blog which ultimately leads to more traffic for them.

7.       Try running a contest for the month with the winner receiving a prize for his or her efforts. You can set minimum number to enter so you don’t end up rewarding the fellow with 6 comments over the entire month.

These are just a few methods to get us all going, and help us grow the lower section of our blogs, and this is the third goal on my personal success series goals which can be read about here. Obviously if you’d like to help out it’s no harder than leaving a comment, or just saying hello!

I think sometimes the best ways to get comments is to ask for it, I personally think it is a good thing to leave a constructive comment when you read someone else posts, it motivates them do better in my opinion. :) However it is true that some people will read or download things on posts then leave without saying anything… LOL!
